- In Rajasthan, otherwise known as ’The Land of Kings’, the Maharajahs have lost none of their famed prestige. Century-old traditions are held true even today, and royal legacy is of utmost importance. Common people kiss the feet of their princes and offer small amounts of money to those millions times richer than themselves as signs of respect and submission.
Danenjay Singh, heir to the throne of Khimsar, is getting married. The team of reporters has been invited to the week-long ceremony to document the extravagant proceedings. On the seventh day, the young prince will climb aboard an elephant and find his wife, who up until this moment, he has never seen and was chosen by his grandmother. With sunglasses, bodyguards, speedboats and a an entire airfield of toy planes, Laksharaj Singh has taken over the family business of managing the 10 converted palaces he inherited from his father, which are now a series of luxurious hotels. But despite his tabloid exploits, his primary duty is to enter into a decent marriage. Padmanabh, 13, is the heir to a €500million fortune, which he gets a taste of on his birthday, in a commotion of gestures and formalities.
This report looks at the ceremonious splendour and indulgence of these families and their Rajputs, in a country marked by inequality and gross poverty. We also see how these young men, despite their grandiose destinies, wish they could have a normal life.
This documentary was first released in 2012.

French tourists CRASH the wedding, coerce the prince into a selfie and then criticize the hosts? WTAF - im not a stickler for manners/rules but thats just plain rude in the face of generous hospitality. They should have been shown the door.
This reminds of a time in goa, india when these white tourists crashed our party and ate our food. All of my family were polite to them but we never invited them. We definitely bitched about them in our language. It's so weird that they do this. I think they automatically think all indians are very generous and have a big heart.
Sadly certain people just feel like they need to be treated better than others, even if they clearly have No manners or Decorum.

The documentary was extremely condescending. You don't need to agree with the lifestyle of the Indian royal families, you don't need to try to understand the intricacies and traditions of the very old Indian society...BUT...You need to have a basic level of respect while reporting !
Loved how classy and respectful the Indian people (royals and non-royals alike) were during interviews...This only brings to surface the extreme level of prejudice people have !
For example, the presenter translated almost every line (including some that were spoken in perfect English) but did not translate when the Maharani tells her new daughter-in-law to remove her veil as it did not feed into the narrative !
Towards the end heights of condescending comments… this in the poorest of countries…. Well well ask the British was India poor or one of the richest… when they came to trade and looted and made India poor… not any more India is rising and the world knows it … I don’t know that about u who goes to ppls homes and disrespects them!!

India is by no means a perfect country and by no means a beacon of hope for masses but blanketing it all under one snarky and ignorant comment is unfair and irresponsible.
What is your reference for this remark? Do you have any data to prove that in the current, educated Indian society, with a so called "low caste" President, people of "lower" castes are still being disrespected in mass ? What percentage or uneducated and ignorant people are actually involved in such practices or is this a prevelant practice as it was 25 years ago ? Can you compare this to the other "developed" countries where people from poor backgrounds are treated worse with no access to any basic healthcare or proper education in capitalistic societies to other countries where treatement of minorities is not only worse, but akin to humanitarian abuse surmounting to genocide ?
The lack of respect in the tone of narration is simply unacceptable after they welcome you so openly into their intimate and sacred culture and their personal lives.

Extremely disrespectful to denigrate the people and customs that you've been so respectfully allowed to visit. Have a spine to do the same in UK or other countries within the British Empire. Colonial cronies at their best to still use the same philosophy they did 200 years back.
Agree! Some parts of the docco were good, yet some parts were appalling like when the interviewer quiet disrespectfully taunts the prince of Udaipur that they take advantage of their international guests by charging them $100 a pop in the name of their cultural Holi celebrations. Yet Laksharaj was polite and humble in his response and more importantly the guests were having a great time showing their appreciation to the royal family.

Unfortunately their security would be at high-risk, that’s a society where in any circumstances at gatherings like these, alcohol is used and this makes a hell of a difference between how these ceremonies are conducted in a country like India where alcohol is virtually unknown, compared to societies like those in Europe, where alcohol is always involved because it’s been part of the culture and even religion for thousands of years.
I’m not discussing here if that’s right or wrong from your point of view but it is a fact.

The title of this documentary is wrong. As a close observer of Indian royalty, I can confirm that they are no longer 'Super rich' by any stretch of imagination. A lot of it is portrayal and projection for tourists.

As i know, the owner of Maharajah Palace is Thai- Indian. He is only 1 son whom his mom is a member of old Royal Thai family, Vipavadee family. After his dad died, there were an agruing and suing between his dad's family and his mom about the heritage. It had been in the court for a few year and finally the Madam Vipavadee won and transferred to her 2 kids. The palace is transformed to be a luxury hotel.

This was so so beautiful. Loved it from Pakistan. The real beauty of the Rajput royal dynasty is in its traditions and noble morals and utter respect for their elders and care for their people. Stay that way forever. I wish one day I can stay at the royal palace hotel. I love Rajasthan.

I was lucky to attend a gorgeous Rajasthan wedding while travelling there. It was fun and very spectacular. The huge number of guests were present. Keep up the tradition.

@@DeepakJes 1. It's an absurd argument, that you should spend your wealth according to pleasing the poor people. We don't really know what they donate to the society, so how can we judge them. A society doesn't thrive if you just hand out donations to poor, it thrives when poor people have ambition to change on they what they can't afford.
2. Regarding the poor people money, it won't do anything good to the rich, small sum, but it's a tradition in India, that people give some money on auspicious occasions as a blessing that prosperity always stay with you. Instead I am happy to see humble attitude of rich in accepting that, and upheld the respect of all those people. gift can't be judged by price but goodwill.

Not all western people sees other culture as inferiors, there are people who sees that way but not all of them are, if it where as u says it to be, then there will be a great issues among westerners on Indian beings the top leaders and CEO's in the west. I actually have nothing against these noble families. My ancestors were manorial servants, and these families are usually good to their employees, especially now in the modern era.
A lot of them have extreme pride, the serving staff. They are very proud to serve the ppl who have the blood of warriors. Back then Kings went into battle and didn't send just soldiers. They fought wars themselves and were martyred. And yes they are paid very well. Most of them live in the Palace itself.

Seems pretty much like the British royalty. Useless worship of men won't bring you any sort of salvation on this world nor the next.
I've seen comments that this documentary is disrespectful, but they're asking questions that disrespectful people around the world would ask/assume, and they're getting very intelligent and relatable responses from the people that live within and love this culture. I think it's wonderful! It highlights the glorious culture, and also the humanity of the wealthy. It details how much responsibility sits on their shoulders, how they relax their minds (flying model airplanes, not with drugs/alcohol/salacious affairs!), and how they can help the communities that their ancestors once protected. I've gained respect for these people and traditions, so the documentary is actually really well done.
What can we expect from a British accent documentary man! They are jealous deep down that in spite of them looting the country for hundreds of years, these kings are still rich. He needs to end it with "one of the poorest countries of the world!" Really? First it is not the poorest country. Second even if it is, he need not say it, especially when men/women from his country want to attend such a wedding because their country can't offer this culture and hospitality. They are not civic yet like India is. Even though the documentary is well done, he has spoiled it by such unwise comments.
The commentator's closing statement was that "India is one of the poorest countries in the world". I don't tend to agree with that cause India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world with many millionaires. How is it that it is now a poor country?

About 85-90% of the kings who fought against Islamic invasion were Rajputs. Maharana Pratap was the greatest for me.
He used to carry two swords, if his enemy was armless, he would give one sword to him. He was a huge man and used to carry a very heavy sword, so heavy that once he cut down a mughal into two along with his horse.
Most rajputs surrendered too!
Unlike the marathas who fought and conquered the mughals.

The person you are talking about is Devraj Singh and his sister Lalitya Devi who are the childern of Jagat Singh

Prince Jagat was the son of Gayatri Devi
He married the sister of Prince of Thailand
But since gayatri devi was the 2nd wife of Sawai maan Singh II (the ruler of Jaipur)- her child could not be the legal heir to Jaipur
Jagat had one son and a daughter (devraj and lalitya)who have now won the case to inherit their grandmothers property\shares -

It's just Indian, kings always marry other royals doesn't mean they become half indian half Thai. Only Father side will dominate the discussion and children would be considered as part of Father's heritage. Many indian royals got matrimonial alliances with Nepal, Turkey, Iran Royal families it's just normal I guess for royals to marry other royals not commoners

Why, in so many of the comments here,are viewers targeting the royalty for their excesses and bad mouthing them ? How about the thousands of new rich Indian businessmen who think nothing of hosting lavish weddings costing hundreds of crores in cities in India where a huge percentage of people live below the poverty line? Not a word is said about them.The poverty continues for many and wealth increases much of it ill gotten gains .The flip side of all this is, and we must not forget this, is huge employment opportunities are simultaneously created for people from various walks of life everyone from jewellers to the humble flower sellers and everyone in between,stands to gain from these “excesses”,without which they would probably have starved from lack of work opportunities
Rich businessmen or politicians having lavish weddings are also criticized. And talking about generating employment opportunities through these weddings, if they (The Maharajas --- mostly of whom are politicians) would have done their work properly, and fulfilled their duties there would have been no excuse to use marriage as a way of creating short-term employment. They've no right to show super-rich they're when the JANTA from whom taxes they're enjoying their lavishness are suffering.

Great documentary. I love it. In a way, it's both a completion and continuation of my 1-week visit to India in 2019. I had wanted so much to see and visit Udaipur but everything was out of my range and budget --so that always felt like a hole in my Indian experience. With this documentary --granted it is 10 years old from when it first came out--I got an even more intimate peek and extra layers into the splendor and luxury of the remaining Indian royal houses! I can't have enough. Now, how do I get adopted by the Udaipur Singh maharajahate?

Ah how I love India, I was lucky enough to be able to visit for a couple of weeks some years ago which had been my dream since a small child. Such a rich history, I dont think Europeans "get it". There is a flow to India, an acceptance of ones place that westerners just dont understand with their sense of self entitlement.

Yes thats what i thought not updating..As i know, the owner of Maharajah Palace is Thai- Indian. He is only 1 son whom his mom is a member of old Royal Thai family, Vipavadee family. After his dad died, there were an agruing and suing between his dad's family and his mom about the heritage. It had been in the court for a few year and finally the only son gets it.
the Maharajahs son is quite good and respectful to the people / villagers of his region, inviting them to his festivities, of course everyone knows their own level, but his father and him behave much better than the riche billionaires in other "democratic" countries :)

Go take a look inside their hospitals which have shocking unhygienic conditions even in private hospitals and there are actually hospital wards full of women who have suffered domestic abuse mostly due to drugs and alcohol.

Fascinating documentary about an amazing culture and country . Some comments would suggest that the documentary was disrespectful I would suggest that it simply highlighted the differences in western and eastern cultures . In the UK the same pomp and pageantry is played out with the Royal family .
