I read this as a young teenager and have read it over and over. I also wish someone would make a movie or mini series of this book. MM Kaye’s writing is phenomenal. The way she describes John (Winters grandfather) as “pure gold without a trace of alloy”, where Winter is grieving her young friends death and states…”you’d be far more upset over the death of a dog, or worse yet, a horse”, the description of her room growing up, the plaster on the wall being cool on her little face, Conway is gross, her writing in his voice when he’s drunk…you can hear it aloud. I could go on… the best book I’ve read. I fell in love with the characters and really cared about them. Your review is spot on!

I adored this book, the other amazing thing about it is that you can read it several times and catch new details. I like it better than Far Pavilions for several reasons. One being I just like Alex and Winter better than I like Ash. When you read Far Pavilions you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

I loved this book. I do agree it's not conventional but I love Winter and Alex's dynamic. He's a non- committal soldier with no attachments. She's a hopeless romantic wishing on a star for her happily ever after. When they meet, Alex becomes unsure of his feelings and finds himself unconsciously caring more and more for Winter while Winter tries to deny her feelings for him by painting Conway as the perfect knight in shining armor.
I thought they'd elope at some point but everything was written well and I liked the ending better than I expected.

Hey there! Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts on this story! I love how you describe the effect they have for each other. And I really liked the book a lot more than I expected. I keep remembering (along with The Far Pavilions), wanting to re-read it, since it really has everything I enjoy in a novel... plus, now I have two actors in my mind to play Winter and Alex: Alicia Vikander and her husband, Michael Fassbender :p

THE MENTAL TRAVELER Nice. Although I see Crystal Reed as Winter and Tyler Posey as Alex. Which one do you think is better the far pavilions or this book? I haven't read the former yet and I'm curious.

I looked them up and they are good casting choices too! As to The Far Pavilions, I think it´s a better book. This one is amazing, but TFP is epic. The love story there is more traditional, and the protagonist is a man, not a woman like in this one. I would totally recommend it, and I think it´s good that we both read SOTM first, so as not to think any less of it or something for not being "as grand" as the other one :)

THE MENTAL TRAVELER I hope I get to read it someday. You can't really find any M.M Kaye books where I live. Mostly Danielle Steel.

I hope so too! And it´s the same here. I had to buy them as E-Books. I would have loved to have them physically though!

Shadow of the Moon is one of my all-time favorite novels. Besides the beautiful love story, we get a great window into the history of that place, that country, those people, those times. Along with the story of Winter and Alex, there are so many other characters that come to life. The author is a master.
