Hey Josh, thank you for doing this video. I finally programmed my Icom ID-52 and got on some repeaters in my area. First time ever making a 2m contact. Keep it up Josh!!! 73!!!

As a dispatch supervisor, using a downed officers radio to call for help would be appreciated.
But scene safety is a big priority.
Head on a swivel if you just see an officer down in your grocery store parking lot in normal day to day life dispatch would appreciate that. Vs a SHTF scenario and your getting a battle field pick up Motorola calling in a barking dog complaint would be frowned upon.

Those laminated cheat sheets are very smart! Also it would be really nice to have some Android version of Chirp, at least with cloning function, so you could do basic programming easily in the field.

You said that you were deleting some repeaters from your radio due to "content or FCC violations." Are you referring to profanity and unlicensed operators? We have a new operator on our repeater who just moved here from CA (LA area). His license had expired 18 mos ago. He was really offended when requested that he renew before using the repeater again. Later, he was heard on a profane diatribe, even dropping F-Bombs on the repeater. He was called out for that, too. He apologized and renewed his license within a few days (though without updating his address). He seems to have turned into a model operator in short order. BUT, during the fiasco, I couldn't help but wonder: "What passes for acceptable conduct on CA repeaters?" He made his pirate-behavior sound normal and that we were "an unfriendly group" for correcting his behavior. I was not a part of the corrective action, but I later shared the position that 99% of the 700k hams in the US are compliant operators. Personally, I can deliver language that'll peel paint from any surface; but NEVER on the radio or even at ham meetings (it's almost like going to church😂). So, what is the truth about some repeaters? Is the pirate behavior a CA thing or perhaps a big city issue? I've never encountered someone who both did it AND stuck around long enough to double-down about it being normal. Just curious.

In follow up to your live show Josh, do you ever name your repeaters during programming such that geographically some part of the "name" cell sort of hints as to its location? I do this on my Anytone D878UVII+. Great show, lots of practical ideas!

Is there an radio that has a bluetooth phone app where you can pull up a real-time map with your location and nearby repeaters (with data from repeaterbook) and you just tap the repeater on the map and PTT without having to manually program it in?

Josh, where can I get the printed version of the NIFOG that you showed in this video? I see a downloadable version but I would love to get the small printed and bound version that you showed. Thanks so much for all you do for HAM radio. 73’s from KI5PRK

33:15... on all my copies of RT Systems (FT2DR, FT3DR, ID-52, IC-9700, Kenwood D75, FT-991A) there's a box at the bottom of the screen, a pulldown, and you can deselect what you don't want to bring through to the main radio screen. You don't have to do it manually at all. 33:46... the pulldown is just to the right of the "create file..." button. 36:21... the "2m General Convo" and "2m Auto Msgs" have the same CTCSS tone frequency. Auto messaging should be 123.0MHz based on a previous slide. 51:04... that's not DSTAR. That's an FM repeater.

I think "emergency" has to be placed into context of the person defining it: During normal conditions, preppers with equipment that CAN talk on just about any frequency aren't looking to do that. The phones still work, and their equipment is in metal cans at home. The unlicensed prepper mentality is to be able to not only listen to everyone during a major event in the same context of "normal" operations, but to also communicate after the "owners" of the bands in the plan aren't even showing up for work anymore, and even hams are in SHTF mode, if still able to operate. The preppers may be the only ones able to use radios, in the worst-case scenario. So the divide and rivalry isn't really necessary, imho. Most preppers don't want a license because it puts you on a list of people who have equipment to confiscate after SHTF, and hams do a good job of suppressing unlicensed transmission, so it's more about the capability for later. If you think about it, a Baofeng will actually be more useful after most of the normal noise is gone.

I understand your point. However I think it’s wishful thinking. There isn’t a rivalry, hams are just pointing out unlicensed peppers who own radios without understanding their use are doing themselves a disservice. And if some peppers aren’t getting licensed to avoiding being put on a confiscation list that’s I feel an unjustified level of paranoia.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse I agree with that assessment when regarding HF, and since I have never seen physical evidence that the FCC exists, (except for having sent them money) I would have agreed that being on a list of radio licensees wasn't a problem. But with the current proclivities of the ATF and other alphabet soup agencies using lists of people to knock on doors specifically to take things back that have been recently proclaimed illegal, and even now attempts to silence people on modes of mass communication... 🤔
Sorry about that. I forgot to take my meds. Disregard. 😉

I answered this. RTSystems lets you query straight from repeater book and other online databases.
