Taking apart the old lathes spindle again

  • In this video, I take apart the spindle from my old Karger lathe once more. It's binding up, and I suspect I used the wrong type of oil.

    Is there Sulphur in the hydraulic oil you are using?Sulphur is supposed to be bad for copper and it's alloys. I use Hydraulic Jack oil for my Barnes...

      ISO46 Hydraulic shell oil, that's what I now use, most of the time.

    i don't know if this helps at all,, but i have and use an old lathe similar to yours and only use clean engine oil for my spindle bearings and have no trouble for years. i only use hydraulic oil in the mill gearbox etc. good luck!( do you ever answer your comments?) cheers

      I did eventually find the source of my spindle problems. And now I use hydraulic oil most of the time.
      I'm not commenting on a lot of videos here, because then I need to login with tis account. Commenting with my other Google account is not working.
