- It was 1966 when I first heard this on the radio in Montreal
and I have been a Lighthead ever since
This recording was a hit in Canada (No 6 in Toronto) but is inexplicably ignored by all of the Lightfoot hits compilations.
Accompanying Gordon are Red Shea on Lead guitar and John Stockfish on bass (John left the next year and was replaced by Rick Dutkeiwitz Haynes,(who is still touring with Gordon 47 years later)
I can picture Neil Diamond covering this epic, transcendent classic; we love you Gordon❤
A Legendary Transcendent Songwriter I love dearly💔💜
The best songs he ever wrote were the ones he was trying to get away from, "the sad songs" yet they were the most beautiful of all of his songs and they will endure.
I haven’t heard this great Gord song in a while…
Love the song great video by the way. Sure do miss you Gordo
RIP Gordy!
According to The Gordon Lightfoot Internet Companion website, this clip was from CBC's "Show of the Week", broadcasted in 1966. The host who was sitting at the table with the two ladies was Ian Tyson.
I thought it was the late singer Gene Pitney at first
wow this is a very rare treat nice to see an early performance by Gordon Lightfoot:) thanks for sharing.
Long live Gordon Lightfoot...
A song can not get better than this. Great rhythm, great melody, musical singing, a poem that well describes youthful passion, and the actual poet who experienced it.
Wow, this is great! An actual video from 1966 of Gordon singing Spin Spin. I searched for this song on UA-cam a number of times before 2011, then on April 12, 2011, I uploaded the audio. As far as I can find, I'm the first person to upload this song and yours is the only video I've seen to date although there might be more, this one really counts. Thanks so much. It's a song from my early years growing up in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, Canada (Mill Cove)
Well he is lip syncing but I guess that was oar for the course on tv
It is a catchy tune and good writing from the great Gordon Lightfoot! You can hear more tunes like this at CKWW AM from Windsor Ontario. Living in the Detroit area for decades has given many around here the opportunity to catch great tunes coming out of Canada. CKWW is the “offspring” of CKLW, “The Big Eight” where you would’ve heard this in the 60’s. There were and still are many outstanding AM and FM outlets here. All online
Funny you should mention CKWW. I heard "Spin Spin" last night on AM580 and had to find it on UA-cam and/or Tidal.
@@JohnStefani Don't you guys mean CKLW?
Thanks Nicholas Jennings who wrote Gord's biography....the rest of the world can now understand. Oh Lightfoot is sooooo influential ...this is fantastic.
A youthful charm with just a hint of cheekiness that he lost after signing with Warners.
The song appears on the album "Sunday Concert - Plus" 1969 . It is one of the added songs
I was just about to comment that I cannot find what album this song is on even on iTunes because I’ve seen the album Sunday concert on iTunes I don’t know if it’s on that one or if that’s the same album you’re talking about but I’m gonna look for it if I can’t find it on there I’m buying the 45 record on Amazon lol but I was just thinking that iTunes might not have it now that you mention what album is from. Thanks for letting us know
Wow what a treat to see this video
Great Song!
I thought I had heard all of Lightfoot's songs, but I didn't remember this one. Thanks for posting! His twelve string is capoed at 2 and he is playing the D-shape chords, which would put the tune in key of E. It is in E, so it is apparent that the guitar is tuned at standard pitch. It does however, appear to be lip synced for the sake of the tv show, as others have noted.
It's not lip synced, but is out of sync with the video unfortunately.
I like !!
Rest easy Gordon. ✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️
That's our boy alright.
🎉🎉🎉
To be in love is to be insane such a nice insanity 😅😅😅
I have the 45 rpm disc
He looks like a DC Marvel comics character. Maybe a cross between Superman and Aquaman.
It is painful to watch GL and his band lip-sync to a prerecorded track.
But that was how the television stations liked to do it back them.
The give away is that the electric instruments of the bass player and seated guitar player were not plugged in to anything.
I think most folk and country artists are bad lip-synchers because they most hate having to do it, would probably just rather get their guitars and do it live.
Well, that and the fact that there's no electric 12 string, tambourine, or vocal mic...
They had to do it that way because the technology of the time wouldn't allow them to get sound that would be as good as the sound that would come from a recording studio. Bear in mind, too, that in 1966, the audio portion of television broadcasts comprised relatively low-quality monophonic signals that were broadcast using AM carrier waves.
Before Rick Haynes joined
Is that Ian Tyson, as emcee ?
Capo @ second fret so he doesn't have to barre the b chord?
No, he's using the second-position voicing of the tonic E chord to make so as not to muddy the riff the guitarist plays between verses.
Gordon always tuned his 12 string guitar down a whole step and used a capo on the 2nd fret to lessen the pressure of the strings on the guitar.
What outfits are those ladies wearing??
Is that Ian Tyson at the start?
Got to be, or his twin brother!
Absolutely! Back in the '60's, I thought Ian was one of the most handsome men I'd ever seen (and I still have picture of him from that error hanging on my wall). That's definitely Ian there.
"from that era," I intended to type
I thought it was Gene Pitney
not live...where is the drummer and tambourine player? Why does the song fade out at the end...never happens in a live performance..oh, and the guitars are not plugged in...other than that it's totally live.
so lovely/naif:)
Ring of Fire?
Gordon seems a bit nervous here. Almost like he's out of his element.
Gordon Lightfoot used to suffer from anxiety when he was younger he used booze to battle it which was a bad idea.
I knew that he battled the booze for many years. Never knew about the anxiety. Poor guy.
ya he had his problems but we all do .. still a Canadian Legend
He seems a lot more at ease these days. Looks like he's come a long way.
Similar to "Ring of Fire".
This is lip-synced: no guitar leads, no microphones and a fade ending.
Pre-recorded, yes. It's not the record though.
