As much as I love Patti LuPone... no one can do this part justice over Donna Murphy... Donna set the standard that was never matched.

I think we should all remember Maria Friedman in the OLC and Elena Rogers who both fit the role beautifully (and Judy Kuhn of course).

@@davidpayne697 I will check out the first two mentioned... but must say Judy did not do it justice... I did see videos of her on UA-cam before...

@@davidpayne697 after listening to both Elena and Maria versions... even Patti again... they still do not come close to Donna Murphy... Just because they have a good voice doesn't mean they can play the part to the depth it needs like Murphy did... to compare to another show... Sunset Boulevard... multiple well known performers have played the role of Norma Desmond but no one captured the truly mental essence of the role than Glenn Close did... just something to think about... we may love a plethora of performers but there is always one individual that was born to play the role...

@@tgadams11 I get you. I do think that Maria came close and captured the frantic, volatile side to Fosche very well and her voice suited the role well although Donna is my favourite. I love the others too and despite her accent, Elena was suited too.
I know what you mean though, some characters, you associate certain actors and actresses with. I don't think it's who is best but who fits your interpretation.
Linda Balgord is my favourite Norma by far. I wasn't a fan of Patti in either role though.

She makes sense of this character to me. Murphy is amazing, a legend, but I didn't see her suffering the way I see it here. LuPone should have originated this role.

I definitely did not like Fosca's makeup. They over did it. I understand it's stage but she look like she was already dead.

I can’t stand Patti LuPone as Fosca, the way she belts out this incredibly sensitive passionate song is torture to me. My favourite Fosca is Judy Kuhn and her rendition always makes me cry as she sings from Foscas wounds.

I'm looking for the same thing. For a friend who's never seen it. I've seen it.. pretty dark, not typical Sondheim, but memorable.

I won't say Patti is wrong for this part but I do think that she lacks a sincere vulnerability and fragility, particularly in her singing of Fosca, that is needed to show the complexity of the character. A sad, wounded and selfish child of a woman who expresses the character through the colors of the voice. LuPone sounds too vocally full and healthy to convince me. For me, Donna Murphy owns this role. Just because you can do something does mean you will always succeed. I don't think I would care to see Donna do GYPSY or Merman do Fosca. I give Patti credit that she dials it back, in her own way, but not my choice for this role. I love PASSION!

I think my biggest thing with Patti in this role is that she draws everything out, and puts too much effort into the music; she doesn't let the song speak for itself, she just fuses every note into the next without pause. It doesn't give the audience time to breathe.

    • @davidpayne697

With all due respect to Patti, I find that to often be the case with her in general. Diction is often an issue too. That being said, she is famous and successful in theatre for a reason.

There are other performances that show Ms. Lupone's skill, talent and depth. Also, she may have been under the weather vocally: her pitch didn't stay on the mark. Without being unkind, she seems to have also missed the depth of Fosca's passion - the notes are there, but she isn't breaking my heart. (I know, I know...I'm not the one who's been on Broadway, so stop being an 'expert').

To be fair this is a concert version so it’s understandable why Patti would go lax on the character. Donna Murphy herself has said the character of Fosca is exhausting vocally and mentally.

I think the most upsetting thing about the way she plays this role is her refusal to have any breaths or any pauses in the lyrics. As if she was just this epileptic rhino tearing through the song. A decision she or the director made that just ends up being without nuance, depth, or the power underlying Foscas overwhelming frailty.

I agree with the overall view that Ms LuPone does not quite carry this off. She doesn't let the words breath and is in ways too "musical". The set was horrible which didn't help. This piece requires the richness of its period not stark modernity.

Stark modernity is the future unfortunately.

I think this is a perfect role for Patti. A very sick woman. It makes the fact that she goes flat more excusable.
