My comments on Etsy are disabled and I can't comment on sellers. Could you help me on this one?
Why isn’t Etsy taking this seriously ??
Another red flag … they spelled OneDrive as “onedriver” in the fake link 😊
Oh my gosh I’m so glad I came across this! I had someone message me on one of my shops asking for a custom order and they didn’t tell me it was a bulk order until after I sent them a mock up. They hadn’t sent me a link at that point they just said that they were trying to get a custom order for nurses. That they are their boss and what not and I was trying to do like these employees gifts. Anyways. The person said they were going to put a spreadsheet together with every persons information on what they want it on each custom order. I’m so glad you posted this because now obviously I’m gonna look out for whether or not they are OK just sending me a screenshot. I don’t ever open up peoples links regardless, it’s still good to know if someone is trying to scam. They haven’t sent me yet but I’m gonna keep a lookout for it now that I know this!! Thank you for the video ☀️
There definitely shouldn't be any reason that they couldn't send a screenshot of the information needed for the order. Not all links sent on Etsy are scams but it's still safer to just not click any links sent.
@@StarlaMoore agreed! Thank you !
Thank you for this Starla! Such an important heads up.
You are so welcome!
Thank you Starla! They have been coming at me too. I tried to find out how to tell others, so I'm glad you are helping.
My hope is that sellers will google the scam before clicking the link. There are several cases of this happening that can be found on Reddit and the Etsy forums. I believe I'm the only UA-camr who has covered it though. The more people we get from the Etsy community buzzing about this scam, the easier it'll be to spread awareness.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video! These scams are annoying, and even though I know better, I could see myself getting sucked into clicking on something like this. I will be alert and sure to share this with any other sellers I know!
Yes, I always worry about new sellers in these situations. Especially with scammers getting smarter and smarter.
Where is a legit company to make us a cat patio for Apt windows? you can help cats and make money just to be legit about it ok..
New Etsy seller here that just got scammed out of £150 with this exact thing 😤
Thank you Starla, hope you feel better quick!
Thanks so much Deborah! 💛
Hey Starla, just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for making this video! I watched it when it came out and today I got the “I want a custom listing, click this file because it is a high quality image and I had to compress it” message. Thanks to you sharing your knowledge, I just marked it as spam and went about my business. I appreciate your dedication to educating Etsy sellers! Thank you, thank you!
You are so welcome! Put that scammer in the trash where they belong. 😎🔥
Thank you for the information, Starla! I started my shop in January. I'm at 15 sales and I need to take a day to do a deep dive into your videos on how to build. I'd like to think I would have been immediately skeptical of a link sent to me but this is still VALUABLE information!
You are so welcome! Good luck with your new shop and please don't hesitate to join us live on Fridays if you have questions!
@@StarlaMoore Thank you!!!
Thank you for the heads up.
Always! 💛
Thanks for this information, Starla!

Thank you. Good to know ❤
You're so welcome!
Stay safe!
Thanks a ton for sharing and researching this!
Glad it was helpful! 💛
I got a message today from someone claiming to have trouble paying. The only link was to my listing, supposedly, but they had a screenshot saying Etsy wanted the seller's email address. I was dubious then. I automatically marked the message as spam. I might have missed out on a sale, but the alternative wasn't worth it.
Thank you so much for info Starla
You are so welcome! 💛
WOW So glad I saw this ,Thanks so much,
Thank you for the heads up, Starla. New shop owner and would have clicked the link, 🙏
You are so welcome!
Thanks Starla, I’m not quite a newbie but still inexperienced so I may have fallen for this out of ignorance of (safety) conventions.
It's an easy mistake! Especially if you think you're about to get a big order. 😭
Thank you for sharing the info about the scam AND how to deal with this. Much appreciated!

Thanks so much! 😭 I got very sick after recording this video but I'm feeling a bit better today. ❤
Even with covid, YOU ROCK! thank you dear, I hope you feel better fast, both of you💗
I'm finally starting to feel a bit better today after a very hard weekend. Covid sucks. 😭
I’ve had this message before. I mostly get people begging me to donate my most expensive items to their charity.
Thank you!! stay safe y'all!
Thanks, you too!

Wow thanks for the heads up. I would have totally fallen for that.
You and me both! 😭
Thanks so much.

Also, Etsy is growing because they make money off of every listing people create, so they are making money whether it sells or not (but you knew that.) BTW, thank you for the scam update, also, great video, I just subscribed. Also, I use to work with clay, and I've been considering jumping back into it for a while now.
thanks for this info 🙂
Thanks so much! Stay safe! ❤
Thanks for the info. Totally new to selling on Etsy and this is good info to have.
So glad it was helpful! 💛 Good luck on your new shop!
I’m so glad you covered this! This happened to me a few weeks ago. I immediately felt the message was suspicious, but I felt pressure to respond just so that my response rate wasn’t affected. Luckily, when I did respond It didn’t go through, I’m assuming because the user was already reported. My question is, what is the purpose of sending someone a link? What exactly are they trying to accomplish by doing that?
Since it is a file that you need to download and unzip, it could potentially carry a keylogger (to steal your passwords and other personal info) or other viruses that could do anything from stealing info to taking over control of your computer to killing your computer. And having an anti-virus software, while helpful, may not stop it before it gets into your computer. Scammers always gain something from their scams, whether it is money directly or information that they can use to steal identities or do other horrible things with. The best bet for everyone is to not even click on links that come in messaging on any platform or via email unless you absolutely know the source is someone safe. But even then, if you are unsure, call the person and verify if they sent you that link.
I once received a questionable email that appeared to come from my mom. Before I clicked it, I called her to check if it had come from her and it hadn't. Someone had spoofed her email address and sent malicious links to everyone in her email contacts, and there was no way to track who it was. So we got her email re-secured and called everyone that could have gotten one of the emails to warn them. Luckily no one was tricked by it. Warning, if you email the person to see if they sent the email and the scammer still has access to the account, they will tell you, "Of course I sent it. I think it is something you will like." so this is why we always tell everyone to call the person.
Hackers and scammers had all the time in the world to come up with new ways to get what they want, so everyone needs to be vigilant. Scary world out there, so stay alert and safe everyone!
Unfortunately without me clicking that link, tracing it (at the time of recording) was the best I could do. And that's what lead me to the University of Pittsburg's website. BUT since publishing the video, several people have contacted me to let me know what happened after they fell for the scam. Apparently it leads you to a page that make it seem like you've been logged out of Etsy, and you're asked to enter your email and password to sign back in, at which point the scammers will of course have your login, your shop, and they'll be able to see all of your payment details.
😮 So glad you made this to warn others! I am new to Etsy and would have fallen for this.
Glad it was helpful!
I still haven't received my first custom order yet but thank you for the tip. Definitely this is something to be aware. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Scammers stink.
I've had similar scams in the past, it wasn't from a university, but it was the same way of 'showing' items they wanted to buy or wanted a discount for. I'm pretty alert to these things and did also report these as spam to Etsy.
Wow I believe this almost happened to me but with a different approach. They reached out and asked if they could build me my own website- no charge. Sounded too good to be true. They asked for my contact info so they could send me an email, which is when I saw this video and realized most likely they were going to send me a one drive link. Thanks for this video, much appreciated.
Thank you!! I’m a new seller & this was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the warning Starla!
Of course!
Thank you! I'm still gonna support and learn from you
We're rooting for you Abby!
@@StarlaMoore thank you, I would like to join group again after I get my head back on my shoulders. I need a good mental health break. I'm back to having panic attacks. I hope you feel better. I do want to show you some comments I got on my blog but am unsure this part of how this drama got started in the first place.
Thank you. Feel better
Thanks so much Jill! 💛
That’s horrible. I had a weird message a couple weeks ago and the person said that her and her family were opening up a boutique shop and would like to know if I would be okay with them selling my jewelry in their store and would I offer a discount if they bought a lot. I said yes I would give them a discount of some type and she said thank you and she would get back to me. 🤔🤔🤔 I’m wondering about that message now and I had already planned that if they bought this bulk order everything would be done through Etsy and not offline. I haven’t heard back yet but not sure if it’s a scam.
I am here because I heard of this game from another UA-camr before I started my Etsy shop back in March 2023. I just receive a message from a customer asking for 200 shirts with their company logo on it. I wanted to hear more about this scam and I am very glad I came across your video. Although I don't know if this is a scam yet I am glad to know exactly how the scam works. From my experienceyoue NEVER and I mean NEVER open a file sent from anyone you dont know.
I will give updates on this order.
thank you didn't know about this new seller so thank you again
Absolutely! Stay safe and good luck with your new shop! ❤
Thank you for the video. You saved me from falling for the same scam today.
Oh no! I'm so glad you were able to catch it! Definitely mark them as spam so Etsy will see what they are doing and hopefully ban them!
I’m a seasoned seller and I might have fallen for this😳 thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
was such a serious PSA, no funky lo-fi beat dance queue at the end! Gonna have to watch the next video then
Haha! I know, right? I just didn't feel like the topic called for dancing. But dancing will resume this week! 😂
Just happened to me, exactly like you showed. I came to youtube to check if others were getting these and this confirms it is a scam.
Hi, I got the same messages, there is an exe file in the zipped folder and most probably it is a trojan virus or something like that will ruin your computer's harddisk. The scammer insisted on clicking on the exe file, which is obviously nonsense and I did not do that. If it is a custom design, then the file needs to be jpeg, png, tiff etc... Exe files may be very dangerous but as I am using a mac, this is not a problem for me.
I got scammed . I just opened my shop . Is this website even worth starting ?
1 i love your content, 2 i love your bayside shirt! ❤
If you look carefully, you can kind of see my bayside bird tattoo in the video as well. It's down on my wrist. 😍 Thems my boys.
Yes, and they get pushy when you say I don't click links. It's happening, be careful.
I keep getting message saying one of my items have been sold from something called
etsy supp
and
bot etsy
then I see no sales,
is this a scam?
Thanks for the vid. Marking the message as 'spam' is worse than second best, when we know it's an active scam. Ask me how I know. There should be a button to mark it as fraud so that Etsy jump on it.
Etsy is too lax in that regard.
yes i got this message too.. but with a google drive file
I don't understand, what is the scam? What is the scammers end game with the link, what happens when you click or download it?
This has happened to me as well and I’m quite a small shop started 2 months ago! I told them I cannot open the link and they insisted as well however, I reported directly.
Yes, always report them!
So weird, because I just got a request this afternoon for 700 of my pieces customized as a free gift for customers of a large online garden tool company. No link was provided, the language was very natural, and she provided a phone number, so it seems legit, but .... I will know exactly what to look for now as the conversation progresses. Thank you for looking out for us. Your advice is invaluable!!
It may be a legitimate order, but if so, there's no reason that she should need to send a link that directs you off Etsy. So just stay alert. I hope it's a real order though because that sounds like an awesome opportunity!!!
Custom orders can go off the rails even without scammer fraud. I used to take them on and I learned a questionnaire is the way to go to screen potential customers. Explain your process, what you're willing to do, what you're not willing to do and make the customer think through their request.
That’s really smart! Never thought of that
Great idea!
I'm a newbie and appreciate this information! I will keep this in mind if someone tries this with me.
Good luck with your new shop! 💛
Thanks for the heads up, does anyone know what is the purpose of the scam? Like, what would have happened if I clicked on that link?
Is it targeting my etsy shop? or just a way to get into my hard drive?
At this time, I'm unsure. After tracing the scam back to the University of Pittsburg, I hit a dead end. I was unable to find out what information the scammers were after, nor was I able to find any cases of someone opening the link. But I'm going to keep my eyes out. They could be attempting to steal any number of things. Bank details, remote access to your desktop, Etsy account login details... It really just depends on how skilled the scammers are.
I've had a few dicey issues similar happen. One guy tried making a super rushed order of a large commission and trying to have me not only click a random link where "all the details needed for the orders are" but also wanted me to make an account on their private sight so we could work on the project on there or something. Cuz "he's working abroad so it's why he set up the online workshop". OMG fed flag. An then one just last month wanted to pay me in some random crypto currency, all he needs is my address an bank information and I will get payed. He even tried sweetening the pot with a 600$ tip on top of the commission. I've had outhers but these are just the two most ridiculous and stupid obvious ones I've encountered with my families art store.
What the heck is it with scammers? I wish they'd just go away and stay there.
Agree. They are becoming a huge problem on Etsy.
Omgosh I got this exact same message on my second personalized shop!!
So many people have come forwards to say that this has also happened to them. Was the message sent recently? It seems like most of these cases have taken place within the last 2 months.
Hi, I have asked to complete an internship but I'm on stage 3 and they require a large amount to be deposited, also the tutor is on telegram and did not accept calls in south africa
I heard this in a reddit group, too. People are so evil. It makes me sick 🤡😕
Yes, I saw multiple reddit threads and Etsy forum posts about it. There are always a few random scams circulating Etsy but this one seems to be spreading way faster than any others I've seen over the years.
I've just came across this scam a few days ago but it was presented slightly different. They wanted to place a large custom order and they sent me a link from etsystatic as some sort of PDF file which I stupidly opened but within the PDF file there were other links which looked like genuine etsy links to products. They insisted I review the information carefully and click each link to make sure I had it in stock. I never clicked the links within the PDF file and have since changed my password and marked it as spam.
I just got a weird message today. They wanted to order my most expensive item. They sent a order request link that I did click on. It asked for my card info and balance. It didn't go through and so far nothing has been stolen out of my account. The name on the profile in my messenger was different from the one on the order request page. Hopefully I just dodged a bullet. My page is new and I'm trying to get my shop up and running 😔
Hi there! I’m super nervous because I just got a message that said “Hello” and had a picture of my high priced item (the thumbnail) as well as a link that went back to my item. I instantly got suspicious and looked up the persons Etsy page…only 3 items. What should I do?
If they provided no additional context, just mark the message as spam.
Something else: If I go with my store for 4 weeks in vacation mode, how will it affect my organic ranking when I return? Do I have to start all over? Or do you think I can continue right where I left off? Thanks a lot for any insight!
I actually have a video that covers this topic: ua-cam.com/video/1WDcRyreVIs/v-deo.html 🙂
@@StarlaMoore You're awesome, thanks a lot!
Today i received a message from a seller on the Etsy app asking did I complete a purchase (with a link to order number). I clicked it and it was $100 worth of dog leashes which I never purchased. I dont even have a dog. Seller says this has been happening with them a lot recently. I tried to see if the link was rigged but i couldn’t find anything. Weirdest part - the leashes were to be shipped to my correct address.
Some of help?
This sounds like something you'll need to reach out to Etsy support about, unfortunately.
I've seen so many people scammed this way over the years... Not just through Etsy but through MSN, social media, forums, etc. It allows the hacker to control your pc without you knowing and then once that's done ANYTHING is possible. Some people really are awful
Oh yeah. Scamming has always been around and it'll never stop. And scammers get better and better at it every year.
Thanks so much for the warning. These scum bags will do anything to scam people. They always find new and innovative ways every day to get people. Many are very good that even the most intelligent can fall for them if they aren't careful. But I'm glad that she was smart enough to not click on the link. And I'm glad that she let you know so you could let us know what to look out for. I hope you feel better soon.
Well said
this scam is still around. They modified it a bit, so it's really easy for a new seller to just click on the link instead of checking the URL first. I marked the message I got as spam, but on the forums are several sellers who clicked the link and had some file downloaded to their device.
I got a message similar to this one but I knew it's a scam once they sent me a link. I'm a new seller but this type of scamming happens to other platforms as well. Just to remind everyone DO NOT open any link a stranger sent you. Worst- case scenario, they hack your account just by clicking the link.
I haven’t seen this exact scam, but over the last 4 days, I have had 5 different people call me to say they received a package from me they did not order. I did have orders with these people’s names and addresses and they all had their credit cards charged (and were able to get the charge reversed). The email used for the order was clearly a dummy account and not their Etsy accounts. Still haven’t gotten a response on this back from Etsy. I really cannot figure out what the end game is. These orders were all in different states and they called me on the phone since I include a business card with orders. I really do not think they were the scammers. The first one I thought it was maybe a scammer, but then it was 5 different people (so far).
This is very odd. I recommend contacting Etsy directly on LinkedIn. They seem to be a bit more responsive there!
I sold an item, the payment was done by credit card and pended for a couple of days. It finally cleared. I still wonder if it’s a scam or fraud because the name and address is someone different than public records. Would Etsy have caught possibility of fraud?
This is actually pretty typical. Often Etsy will refer to it as an e-check payment. It's likely not a scam. I've had 100s of these payments over the years. Just be sure to ship the order AFTER the payment clears. Also, keep in mind that name and address will often not match because Etsy is primarily used for gifts. So often shoppers are shipping to family/friends. 🙂
Yes I have several of those messages asking for a large order and sending links about the products they are interested in, these links go to a page where you need introduce your etsy name and password.... About 4 at this time. It started last summer
Yikes! Thanks for letting me know. This is the first time I've heard of anyone actually discovering where the link leads.
@@StarlaMoore also the first one asked me for my IBAN number. I just got one from yesterday
Hi. I have a situation and I think it is something dodgy... I am a new seller on etsy but today I have received an email in which says that I have e sold an item but in my etsy account I can't see it. I did spoke with the buyer because he asked me at the beginning my email address so he can proceed with the order.... would you help me please with an answer. Thanks cristina
This is a common scam. Never give your email address. It is not needed by buyers, nor will Etsy themselves ever ask for your email. Mark the message as spam and don't reply to them.
I just got a scam that wanted me to email them instead of talking on Etsy. They said they were at work, which is weird, however I did do so. They wanted to see more pictures. Then they said they had payment issues and sent me a screenshot from Etsy Payment which I think is made up stating I don’t have Etsy pay and that the seller would need to contact an email. I did contact the email in which the name for the email was Etsy Payment. Seems halfway legit here. Then the email says I need to purchase an American Express and take photos of front and back with receipt and send to them. Wow now I know it’s a scam, “How did someone create an email for Etsy Payment?” I feel like this might trick people
I just had something similar happen. I did not fall for it luckily.
I got a message request for a custom shirt saying a certain thing. I sent them a mock up proof with lots watermarks over it. I thought it was weird they never answered, so i followed up. they said they were ready to purchase to send them the listing, and they stop responding. dont know if it was a scam but i certainly thought it was odd.
Hmmm. Definitely sounds like it could have been, especially if the message was similar to the ones shown in the video.
I am quite a newbie...but I never click on any links. No matter if is on Etsy, messenger, WhatsApp etc...🙄
I don't do custom orders so they would luck out on my shop. Thanks for the info though.
At least now if you get this message you can tell 'em to shove it and banish them to the spam box. 😂💛
@@StarlaMoore Exactly.
I literally got this message yesterday. I read it and said yea right.
Uhg, so terrible. I really worry about newer sellers.
I know this is a crazy question, but how does Etsy charge, i know twenty cents per listing but how much for a listing that has 3 colors and let's say 5 different sizes? is it twenty cents per color and per size or just 20 cents for the whole 1 shirt all sizes and variations?
Variants are included in your 0.20 listing fee. Here is a video where I cover all Etsy fees. 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/am4g1LSJEgY/v-deo.html

I got one almost identical about a month ago. I reported it to Etsy. Another UA-camr made a video of the exact message I got too!
I'm glad other UA-camrs are covering this scam. I was trying to find videos about this exact scam while researching but I couldn't find anything. Do you by chance remember which UA-camr it was? I'd love to share it.

Hi. I think I'm losing a lot money in a etsy scam. Tried to report it to Etsy. But was not very helpful.
Unfortunately reaching out to Etsy support is all you can do, aside from disputing the transaction with your bank or Paypal.
Even customers service tried to scam me smh
