    I’m 70 and had a failed scoliosis surgery when I was 39. I still have the hard wear but no Harrington rod. I now have kyphosis and am scheduled for surgery to straighten my spine in Dec. The pain is really awful and extremely tiresome. I expect my surgeon will have to remove the old hardware left over from the botched scoliosis surgery before continuing with the Kyphosis surgery. I’m excited just to be able to stand upright for the first time in years. And hopefully to get off of the oxycodone!

    When is a patient candidate to get surgery? I have a 16 year old son he is 6.2" tal and 320 lbs he has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis in 70° and Sheuermann's Kyphosis in 65° and children's hospispital in Colorado has put him in physical therapy to strengthen his back muscles. He has been progressing since he was first diagnosed 3 years ago but they say he is not a candidate for surgery because it has to be up to 100°. My son is in a lot of back pain and can't play any sports because of this. Is there something else I should do? Can I make and appointment with this doctor? 😩 seems he understands the pain that kids go through. Thank you in advance.

    My son has this disease. 85 degree extension. He's 31 years old. Can he get surgery?

    the information! got it diagnosed it only when 40, because i got severe backpain. im not sure what to do about it, i got some exercises and thats it. i work as a roomcleaner in hotel, but i feel maybe i cant do it anymore, the pain is so severe. my doctor has not offered me any brace, maybe too old for that

    Mine is between my shoulders. Can it cause nerve pain? I sometimes get nerve pain where i cant turn my head left or right

    I was diagnosed with Scheuermann’s disease back in the late 1980s, I was told by my doctor back then I would be on painkillers indefinitely. Iv had endless doctors appointments about pain it got that bad I have severe depression, I can’t stand looking at myself and my life is a world of severe pain everyday. I’m from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and it has taken me the best part of my life to get as far as an MRI done, Iv never had no face to face from anyone I was just told via telephone that the orthopaedic specialist has referred me to another hospital they also told me I have a prolapsed disc in L5-S1. If I bend from my waist I can give a 90 degree angle of my spine but I feel like I can’t breathe in that position I can’t touch my toes and can’t stand flat against a wall with my head touching it , my heads about 4”off the wall to look straight ahead. I’m not sure how you would view a case like this or treat it. I would really like to know...

      I have it too but not as severe as you, I hope the uploader is going to answer your question, in the meanwhile I can give you some tips that I found useful after 6 years of research and testing, you said you cant touch your toes, hamstring flexibility is important to keep the spine flexible as well, so I would suggest you to try stretching your hamstrings while laying down im the floor, if you can, for example lay on your back on the floor (maybe you need something to support your head in the beginning since you said you cant put your head all the way back yet) and while youre on the floor put one leg or both legs at the same time in the air, you might wanna use a doorframe to lean your legs on for that, as you go into the stretch you might feel that your lower back wants to round because it wants to compensate, you should try to not have your lower back compensate too much
      after some days or weeks you should be able to reach a 90 degree ankle with your legs straight up, thats a pretty solid flexibility for the hamstrings.
      regarding your upper back I would do a lot of chest stretches for example touching a doorframe or wall with one straight arm and then turn to the side, then I would focus on the actual curve of the back itself, by trying to open it up step by step one day at a time, taking hot showers before you mobilize it, I would try improving your overhead mobility so youre able to reach all the way up with your arm without having your lower back compensating for it, because after you achieved this, you will be able to grab a bar or something else above your and slowly bend your knees while holding onto the object above your, so it drags your apart, while doing so focus on your thoracic spine being pulled apart and you can also try introducing your abdominal muscles or stomach movement in general while doing this (this will activate movement of muscles that are around the thoracic spine since they are part of the abdominal muscles, i would do the every 2nd day since you will get some aching the next day, but you will see that (even with scheuermanns kyphosis) the curvature is going away if you stay consistent, do before/after pictures and keep in mind that the abdominal muscles play a big role to straighten the upper back, go for it

      dont do sit ups for the adominal muscles, i would suggest training the abdominal muscles only when semi-hanging on a bar by activating them and try to create a feel for your vertebraes in your spine with the help of the abdominal muscles, you might wanna do all kinds of movements to start feeling your back again and being able to pull it apart more easily and in the end keeping it there with your deep muscles

      MillYaN hi 👋 thanks for your input, late last year I sent to my physio, after 2 sessions I passes over to a senior physio and when they noticed the shaking in my arms and legs loosing the feelings in my legs they suggested physio stop until I had been looked at by specialist. If I Stand with my feet 6”off the wall place my back on the wall the rigid curve in the thoracic spine hits first then my tail bone I can place my whole hand through the low back curve it touches my wrist to keep looking straight ahead the back of my head is 4” 4.5 inches off the wall . If I place my head on the wall my eye level is positioned about the 11oclock angle and the rest of the exercise is to place elbows on the wall out to the sides then raise your arms up till the back of your hands touch the wall. I can’t do this....not even close. Next problem is bending if I over my hamstrings want to give way almost immediately also I feel like I’m going to fall over. If it makes any sense it feels like my heads being pushed forward thoracic being pulled back and low back pushed in all at once. If I lay down on the floor to get my low back almost on the floor my legs are past upright position and breathing feels really restricted. The thoracic curve is more angular than a curve. It’s a very sharp steep drop , I do try and keep mobile as much as I can however if I stop for any length of time I seize up fast. I shall give some of your stretching tips a go for sure i will try anything just to relieve the immense pain from this . I’m still waiting on specialist appointment which I hope are soon.       oh there has to be help for you, dont give up. you deserve to get better life quality.. i dont know what advice to give, hope you get some help there. the looks dont worry about, nobody is perfect. but the pain is what is bothering me

    Is there any difference between SCHEUERMANN'S and thoracic kyphosis? If it is which one is more complex means can't be treated?

      yes! I went and saw him in NY he was very approachable, easy to book with (uses zocdoc and takes all major insurances). I had 2 great consults with him and did my surgery at HSS but his advise was crucial for what we ended up doing in the OR for me

    Bugger this is blooming painful have this chronic condition painkillers for life it is then!!!
