Its interesting to see your opinion of the album in real time. I had listened to Abel's songs on the radio for years and always enjoyed them, but never listened to any of his albums in their entirety. After Hours was my 1st full album listen and I fell in love with the sound. I then went back and listened to all of his work starting from House of Balloons, instantly turned him into one of my favorite artists. I'd love to see a follow up in like 6 months or so just to see how your opinion on the albums has changed. I have a feeling your list may drastically shift.
You can’t listen to the weeknd just once and let it be. As you mature musically come back to these albums and you’ll understand why he’s so good. He’s telling us a story with these albums one leads to another. His next album might be the closing to this story he’s told for 13 years.
Funny how you say Kissland is the most forgettable. It took me a few years of being a weeknd listener to dive into it and now, after spending time with it, it's probably my second favorite album of his. The grating industrial production, raw and emotional lyrics, just hits a spot like nothing else
The cool thing about him is his music can be as basic and poppy as it gets but if you decide to dig a little and listen and understand the albums as a whole they are very very deep and thought out. He can appeal to very shallow listeners and to die hard fans. Thats why he's awesome.
i had the same opinion as you when i first started listening to the weeknd, as i listened more, i did a complete 180, don't get me wrong, i still love after hours, beauty behind the madness and his more pop influenced dawn fm, but nothing hits like trilogy or kiss land, both are absolute masterpieces, but kiss land is the better project in my opinion, blending top-notch lyricism with super unorthodox production that works wonders. i feel like if any of his albums will be looked backed by future generations and held as classics, trilogy or kiss land are contenders.
No jokes im going in tommorow to get my kissland tattoo, glad to see i aint the only one who understands how good kissland is. And to think it used to be my least favorite 😂😂😂
I've never watched a video style like this and I like it alot it really gives a perspective of your thoughts on having listened to an artists whole discography in a short period of time! Definitely looking forward for more. Also I love The Weeknd and by the way us fans are called XO and you might also see alot of us say XOTWOD which means xo til we overdose
Crazy how your thoughts perfectly aligned with mine when I just started to indulge into Abel’s catalog lol! At that time, people who said they loved trilogy more than BBTM/Starboy sounded pretentious to me. Like you, the sound and lyrical alignment of his past didn’t resonate with me at all. But, as time passed by, I revisited Trilogy and couldn’t believe how much I loved it. When just beginning to listen to Abel, his old catalog may come off as a cocky man with nothing but drugs and sex to keep him alive. But, that’s what’s sad about that album, a guy who only had drugs and sex to keep him alive. We can clearly see his growth as a musician AND as a person with these albums, where Abel portrays his beginnings so beautifully in each album. In no way, shape or form, is he rekindling the idea of taking drugs, but quite opposite in fact. P.S. I hated KissLand even when I started liking Trilogy. But, to me, KissLand is an album that finally starts to unfold its masterclass after you are over sounds like BBLM/Starboy. KissLand is probably my best album from him, with Trilogy being a close second currently!
Thank you for having taken the trouble to investigate a great artist such as The Weeknd. Greetings from an Ecuadorian born in Spain and a faithful fan of XO
5:48 I'd say wicked games is the best song in trilogy. The song SLAPS! I keep singing it all the time. Might be in my top 10 out of the weeknds discography
Echoes of Silence is so fucking good, its so singular in its quality and vibe, just devastating, I return to it so often. Also Dirty Diana is without a doubt the best Micheal Jackson cover ever made. Honestly so suprised to not see Tell Your Friends in the top 5 of BBTM as honestly id argue its his best song with After Hours, Wicked Games, Echoes of Silence and Innitiation being its only competition imo.
bro i saw best friends at no.4 and i screamed. it’s SUCH a good song but its so underrated 😭😭 u have fire music taste bro thank you for this video (thank you for also doing ariana and taylor 🤭)
Hardest to Love sounds like The Weeknd pulled influences from Aphex Twin which I love. The glitchy beats matched with that reverb synth that sounds like it came from The Backrooms make for an atmosphere that I can’t help but get immersed in. The lyrics hit emotionally as well.
You have to listen to Dawn FM again and again, its my favourite album of his, each song is a banger. When it first came out i listened to the album everyday for like 2 months straight. Its just such a perfect album, the way each song flows into the next, the transitions from one song to the other, the way you go from dancing and grooving to the music to then being relaxed and calm its amazing. Also id highly recommend you make a video on Khalid's music unless youve already listened to his music.
I think a good artist to do this kind of deep dive with would be Childish Gambino. You mentioned Community and it made me think about how diverse his discography is so I’d be interested in seeing your thoughts. If you were to have time, you could also read the BTI screenplay that goes with the album
Yeah bro i used to think the same about kissland, but it turns out to be one of his best, its like ahead of its time, hes actually talking to himself alot in that album. And After hours is a whole ass masterpiece, also his music means so much more after going through dark times in your life so if youre ever feeling down play Trilogy MDM or after hours its an amazing experience. Youre now XO bro!

LOL This 60 year-old loves the Weeknd. He's very talented, doesn't play it safe, and indulgences in big concepts. His videos really added to my appreciation of his music. I was the original MTV generation, so I appreciate the work he puts into the visuals that accompany his music. From what I've seen on You Tube - he's very good live as well. I'm hoping he will have a long, successful career. And a happy life as he ages out of the drama of young adulthood!

I don't know about you, but I couldn't get into a discography in such a short amount of time, especially if it's a genre of music I'm not used to. I really start enjoying new music after a couple of listens. For the last 3 years, everytime I listen to one of The Weeknd projects i find something new and the different layers of his persona. A lot of people miss it, but to me the character of The Weeknd is deeply deeply insecure, probably because of abandonment issues with his father (which is true about Abel, and he puts Quincy Jones as an example of that kind of trauma in "A Tale By Quincy"). And this can be seen in some of his most personal songs, like "Wicked Games", or even in some lines in different songs. But his whole persona is also about masking, about compensating, and that's what he does in his entire discography before After Hours. He braggs because that's the only thing that can make people see him as he would want to be, confident, fearless about commitment and being vulnerable. Of course In your first listen I don't expect you to understand any of this, but keep looking into his lyrics and keep trying to understand. His music videos are also great and can help you put everything together (except "The Knowing" wtf is this). (This rant is mostly because you didn't like Kiss Land lol. And it's my favorite album and full of meaning about accepting fame and selling yourself and leaving a part of yourself behind when you choose the life he chose)
yeah ofc it's impossible for me to understand all the intricacies of every album on one listen, but with this video the goal was to just learn as much as i can lol
my fav The Weeknd song is "The Hills" , i really liked the vibe on it, But ,you not mentioning it is kinda suprising to me . I hope u hav an answer to this
The Weeknd is either my first or second favorite artist of all time. Here's my album ranking (With mixtapes separated, as that's how I listened to them): 1. Dawn FM 2. Echoes of Silence 3. After Hours 4. House of Balloons 5. My Dear Melancholy, 6. Beauty Behind the Madness 7. Starboy 8. Thursday 9. Kiss Land
i don't know how much you've listened to Abel since this video, but you need to relisten to House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence, easily my two favorite albums and HOB only has a few misses while EOS has none IMO. I also need you to relisten to the song Kiss Land, the rest of the album is mediocre and it took a few listens but Kiss Land is one of my favorite songs of his.
You're literally like me in this regard. I never listened to Abel and didn't get the hype, just this week though, I went through his entire discography, and Googled information about him [like why he had to drop the E in his name, etc.] all within a span of a few days. I get obsessive about these things, but it's not just music, it's movies and vidya games as well. Unhealthy levels lol. Which is why i'm probably here.
Personally love his older music. HOB still stands as my favorite album, while Wasted Times (from My Dear Melancholy) is my overall favorite song. First song of his that I ever heard was really early on ( I was like 9 yro) and I heard 'The Morning' in HOB on yt. then came back to it during covid time and he acc began to grow on me... Prior to covid I didn't even listen to English music...
I completely forgot that uncut gems is SET in 2012... I know it's important to the plot, but the Christmas season that it came out was particularly memorable for me, and I was convinced that you'd made some mistake with this intro.
nice video man, kinda triggered for choosing die for you as number 1 lmao, but then you put on 2 and 3 the most underrated weeknds song in my opinion, both in my top 10 too, they need more recognition. new sub 👌
i reaaaallly enjoyed this video man, im a big fan of him and i loved your opinions on everything (even if i didnt agree on some stuff) you´re awesome, keep doing this type of videos, they´re really unique
G'day. Before I talk, I'd like to say that I'm neither here to influence others opinions, nor am I a die hard fan of his music...well, at least not yet. The first time I had heard about the weeknd's music was in 2015, when the Hills played on the radio. Back then I was 6 and didn't know any artists. Then, in 2022, save your tears and blinding lights played on the radio. For the first time I got real curious about his music and listened to after hours, which lead me to 103.5 Dawn FM. Finally, a month ago, I listened to all of the mainline albums n' mixtapes he has produced over the course of over 12 years. Currently, I'm on my second run. Would've already done more runs if Dawn FM wouldn't have chained me for 2 weeks straight. If I had to rank his albums, I simply could not, but Kiss Land is definetly at least on A tear.
You know, probably because I listened to trilogy first to current albums he released my personal ranking would be majorly different being kissland (shocker) trilogy, beauty behind the mask, star boy after hours and dawn fm. This could be from the fact that I grew up listening to trilogy and kiss land but the old weekend was sum else.
My top 3 after hours, Echos of silence, my dear melancholy. I honestly love all his songs don’t have a favorite. I listen to all his albums top to bottom almost daily 😂

U r too pop mate haha that happens to new listeners I listen to Abel music since 2012 and for new listeners, it’s hard to like his older stuff. Then listen to MDM and then After Hours and both of those albums will get 10x better too
I don't know about you, but I couldn't get into a discography in such a short amount of time, especially if it's a genre of music I'm not used to.
And it's my favorite album and full of meaning about accepting fame and selling yourself and leaving a part of yourself behind when you choose the life he chose)
yeah ofc it's impossible for me to understand all the intricacies of every album on one listen, but with this video the goal was to just learn as much as i can lol
thankyou!!! i got so offended when he said he didn’t like kissland 😭
I love how u replied TO EVERY SINGLE comment. I hope u r good and healthy! Good luck w videos!!!
haha ofc and thank u! ur too kind
Dawn fm isn’t praised enough
Welcome to the XO buddy, yeah the fanclub is called XO
sorry im late.....
my fav The Weeknd song is "The Hills" , i really liked the vibe on it, But ,you not mentioning it is kinda suprising to me . I hope u hav an answer to this
The Weeknd is either my first or second favorite artist of all time. Here's my album ranking (With mixtapes separated, as that's how I listened to them):
1. Dawn FM
2. Echoes of Silence
3. After Hours
4. House of Balloons
5. My Dear Melancholy,
6. Beauty Behind the Madness
7. Starboy
8. Thursday
9. Kiss Land
i don't know how much you've listened to Abel since this video, but you need to relisten to House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence, easily my two favorite albums and HOB only has a few misses while EOS has none IMO. I also need you to relisten to the song Kiss Land, the rest of the album is mediocre and it took a few listens but Kiss Land is one of my favorite songs of his.
your channel is so underrated what
haha thank u!!
starboy and after hours made me feel weird and different in a very good way
also the weeknd has an album releasing soon and im gonna need a vid about that :>
oh 100% im so hyped
@@jasonpaulkim better be lmao
It’s crazy that I’ve never heard anyone that agrees with me that dawn fm is the best album. Like it sounds so good it makes me wanna cry.
When i tried listening to trilogy i just couldn't, skipped every song lol, but 2 years later its my favourite frikin album same goes for kissland.
I'm late but Life of the Party is my favorite song and so underrated
Depending on the day my favorite Weeknd project is After Hours or House of Balloons. Favorite song is I Feel it Coming.
i respect it
Dawn fm is my absolute fav album of his
dawn fm is one of the greatest pop records of all time 🗣️🗣️

My fav The Weeknd song is “The Hills” it hits so different in the best way
You're literally like me in this regard. Which is why i'm probably here.
haha yeah man internet rabbit holes or dangerousss 🫡
Omg I freaking love community so much!!!
The hype is the fact he’s the goat.
based
Personally love his older music.
I know it's important to the plot, but the Christmas season that it came out was particularly memorable for me, and I was convinced that you'd made some mistake with this intro.
haha yeah i mainly remembered because of kevin garnett being on the celtics
I love these videos, awesome job on it! 😄
thank u!!! i'm glad u enjoyed the vid!!
The Weeknd fans are called XO as well
thanks lol
@@jasonpaulkim oh I just seen your "The Weeknd rabbit hole" video, you already know lol
Yo i love the video, great work!! U should relisten to kiss land the song, imo its his best song and it gives me chills some times.
thank u!!! i'm glad u enjoyed! yeah i'll definitely go check it out again
A year after he is at almost 120 million listeners monthly and still rank 1, the dude own the game
nice video man, kinda triggered for choosing die for you as number 1 lmao, but then you put on 2 and 3 the most underrated weeknds song in my opinion, both in my top 10 too, they need more recognition. new sub 👌
i reaaaallly enjoyed this video man, im a big fan of him and i loved your opinions on everything (even if i didnt agree on some stuff) you´re awesome, keep doing this type of videos, they´re really unique
thank u! glad u enjoyed
Saw the sticker on your laptop, will you make a video about Mac Miller at some point? 👍😀😀👍😀
lol yeah i'd love to at some point but i don't have any planned at the moment. will have to stay tuned ig
@@jasonpaulkim awesome, you're criminally underrated btw 🙏
@@ItsaLobster thank u!

lol
these vids r so underrated U SLAYED again
haha tyty glad u liked it!!
Didn’t like kissland till wrong Abel live now it’s my favorite! Amazing concept album
The Weeknd also wrote the lyrics to many drake songs
ohhhh cool
His fans are called XOs
You know, probably because I listened to trilogy first to current albums he released my personal ranking would be majorly different being kissland (shocker) trilogy, beauty behind the mask, star boy after hours and dawn fm. This could be from the fact that I grew up listening to trilogy and kiss land but the old weekend was sum else.
My top 3 after hours, Echos of silence, my dear melancholy. I honestly love all his songs don’t have a favorite. I listen to all his albums top to bottom almost daily 😂
The name for his fans is XO, just like his label (although it can be used for both his fans and his crew)
i see i see
Angel being ur favourite from BBTM is based 🗣️
great video, what’d you think of Alone Again? One of his best songs ever imo
i mean its def up there
Can you do owl city next. People say he’s a one hit wonder but he actually has made some bangers I think you’ll like. He has been dropping some new singles all year so you can do it later when he drops and album!!
Should he do Owl City
👇
lmao that could be fun i'll definitely add him to the list
Awesome video man👌
thanks brutha
Fav album def after hours I think in ur eyes is a very underrated song
My top two favourite songs are probably less than zero and save your tears it’s hard to pick with how good the songs are In Dawn FM and After hours
haha those r some of my favs too!
DD (DIRTY DIANA) IS A REMAKE/RE RECORDING OF MICHAEL JACKSONS DD❤
i didn't even know that the weeknd did a cover of dirty diana 💀💀
U r too pop mate haha that happens to new listeners
I listen to Abel music since 2012 and for new listeners, it’s hard to like his older stuff. You’ve to be on a certain mood and listen to it a couple times to really enjoy it… but after that first enjoyment, those become your favorites haha
I just took personal when you didn’t put After Hours as top 5 songs.
Other than that, great review.
this is what mainstream pop fans are like:
more or less ya
4:18 there’s so many more that you’re not counting 😂
ui love the weeknd from trilogy to dawn FM
GASOLINE AND WHAT YOU NEED IS GREAT!!
GREAT PICKS!!!
After Hours is a literal movie it’s the best album since Kaye MBDTF.
To cram the music defeats the purpose. Its more like work than consumption
i disagree its not like im listening to all of it in the same day. each album gets a day and i try my best to consume everything it has to offer while i listen. i take notes etc
You should definitely listen to Melodrama by Lorde
thanks for the rec!!
