  • Making a Penobscot style double bow in silence. I used red oak wood for this project (heartwood). The bow ended up drawing 40-45lb at 22". Love the outcome of this bow build!
Penobscot style bows are a great fun to use and build, but also quite challenging pieces for a bowyer. For sure these are more time consuming project, but in my opinion they are worth the effort. Despite being less handy and more prone to damages compared to the regular bows, Penobscot ones have some specific advantages. Drawweigth on these can be adjusted by stringing the "backing" bow, but also this design can be used to make more efficient and durable bows from "worse" kinds of wood.
Hope you enjoyed these 9 minutes of traditional woodworking.

The best thing with making bows from harvested wood is to get what I call a "pipeline" going (same as what I do in brewing beer, cider, or wine). make sure you have plenty of wood seasoning in a dry place (I tend to mark the date harvested with a marker). That way you have plenty of staves that have been seasoning for several months

Beautiful work! I would like to see how the arrows hit the target - without this the video seems a little unfinished)

Thanks man! It's red oak wood. Some of the best are: yew, osage orange, hickory, elm, black locust - but there are many other great bow woods.

These multi limb bows look cool, but many folks wonder why. I've read the motivation for the Penobscot design and I was impressed by your report on your Hydra bow draw weight and length, but some folks say building a bow like that and having it perform well would be exceedingly difficult.
I've looked at your videos of multilimbed bows, and indeed appears that you DON'T show how well the actually perform! Indeed on your Hydra bow you don't allow comments, which is why I'm leaving this comnent here.
The proof is in the puddin' as my martial arts instructor used to say. Put up, or shut up.
