Creating a video to show this process will take some additional time, but hopefully with this reply, it may help you and others that are not familiar with ISO files. To obtain the ISO file for Windows 11, visit the Microsoft download center: www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11. Look for the section called "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices". From there select it and click the download button. This will actually download the ISO file to your computer. I would suggest you create a directory on your host machine called "ISO" so you can place all of the ISO files in one directory. There is no need to extract the file. ISO files are not like ZIP files in the sense that they need to be extracted. VirtualBox understands how to work with the ISO file. When you present the ISO file to VirtualBox (or any hypervisor), it will mount the file to the optical drive (think CD or DVD drive on the VM). So when you boot the VM, it will boot the virtual machine from the optical drive and start the process of setup. I hope this is helpful.
So it depends… which ISO are you looking for? For example, here is the direct link to download the Windows 10 ISO. www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO Download the ISO and save it to your hard drive. Maybe create a folder called ISO and place all of your ISOs there. Do not extract the media. From a VirtualBox VM, you can mount the ISO so your VM will be able to access it.
The message you see regarding possible disconnection is because when installing a hypervisor, the installation process adds/modifies network drivers on the system so the process is warning you that you may be temporarily disconnected. If you are disconnected, it would only be momentarily and nothing to worry about.
The ISO files are typically provided by the software vendor. Many of them allow the download at no cost. In some cases you can run software at no cost with limited functionality. That is the case of with Windows. For production workloads, you purchase licenses such as Microsoft Windows, you’ll be provided a product key for activation. But you are correct, VMs can’t do much without feeding them the ISO.
Depends. In the example I provided in this video, there is no cost. It is all free. The hypervisor is Oracle VirtualBox (free) and the ISO was downloaded for free from the Microsoft site and they allow the use of their operating systems in a limited use at no cost. Of course, read the agreement terms to ensure how you can use the software at not cost.
can you show us how to extract the ISO and copy it to file ? Where did you get the ISO ? Thanks
