    I'd take one of Dave's setups over a PLEK setup any day and the reason is simple.
    Dave takes the time to "looks for other problems" and usually fixes them if he doesn't stop and call the owner to present it to them.
    No "machine" can match or exceed what Dave provides.

    • @wilson4180
      @wilson4180 5 років тому +3

      genericspace I was against them at the beginning, now I want all my guitars plek’d. The machine can artificially age frets after a refret so they feel broken in. Don’t knock it until you try it, is what I’m saying here.

      If you plek a guitar every fret is exactly the same, even when the bridge setup was the problem in the first place the frets are perfect after pleking and that’s bad?

    Thanks. I just got a set of these for a Tele build. Excellent display of use of specialty tools.
    I'm not a fan of the shape of Grover bean buttons so I usually replace them with plastic vintage style since they have standard mounting. The stock buttons are also heavy pot metal (over 2 oz) if your into weight savings for what ever reason.

    Ah, Grover Rotomatics. I put them on a short-scale Ibby and the difference between the new Grovers over the stock tuners is like night and day. I hate the “instructions” they give you but once you’ve figured out how to string them up, you’ll never want to use any other tuner again.
    Also when removing strings, when you turn the peg it’ll back off the inner cam and let you pull the string back out.

    A PLEK machine is a specialized CNC machine for stringed instruments. They basically put the instrument under string tension artificially and do a fret job and adjust the nut in one operation. Just like Dave said, with that machine, a luthier could possibly do other things while its running. That doesn't make it better than a skilled luthier, just more efficient.

    My industry went CNC and other computer systems which cost a lot. The more they shifted that direction the more I make. The systems are great for the same routine things day after day. Anything not routine and anything the least bit out of that the cost went up exponentially. Lot of cubicle guys who make little. Those who know the ins and outs make a lot more now.

    I checked out the plek. Pretty neat. Im not a musician of any sort but i feel like something like that, while super precise etc kind of takes some of the art and soul out of something that literally centers around art and soul. But maybe i have no idea what im talking about...

    • @sydrose13
      @sydrose13 5 років тому +1

      There's no art and soul in a bad fret job. It's a place where technology is our friend. Frets can still be cut, shaped, and installed by hand on custom guitars which involves lots of soul and art but for the upside of what precise fret heights do for guitar setup and playability it can't be compared. Pleking was never really done by luthiers, so it's not a job lost to a machine. It's purely a modern thing designed to make frets precise after installation.

    The Plek Machines aren't on par with someone who knows what he's doing with the right jig and tools. The pleked guitars often need a second visit by a repair guy, cause a few weeks later it's not exactly the same. The process is still flawed and they often have to work on it after the machine is done. A repair shop owner near by also looked into it. (They're made here in Germany). It's either the way the guitars are fixed in the machine while they're leveling or in the measuring process. Something isn't accounted for.
    The other thing is the money. Some who bought want as much guitars as possible pleked to pay off the machine and start making money. It's like with laser eye surgery. It's something good, but only on a case to case basis. Some people shouldn't do it. Guitar's have their quirks and when something doesn't seem right while a good guitar tech is working on it, he/she/AH-64 will change the approach at that certain guitar. Maybe they improved a little during the latest iterations. There is still a lot of shit to do (setups, nuts, touch ups, broken crap, elecrtronics)...There is nicer work than doing fretwork.

I have bought 2 guitars which boasted PLEK fret work and I've been seriously unimpressed. Yes it could be that the people who "PLEK'd them did something wrong or the machines were out of tolerance or, or, or ............ but after an hour of my own work using simple tools and human care both guitars were transformed. Only 2 guitars BUT they represent 100% of my own personal experience - I smell a slight whiff of tech for tech's sake here and "KIng's new clothes". I'm not going to bash on em' but by time you spend money for a set up and some quality pups and electronics you are in ltd,Epiphone,prs se territory and you get way better quality without the copy infringement.
