- Enhanced version, with English subtitles. Recitative (Ah! Whither should we fly, or fly from whom?) and air (As with rosy steps the morn). Production by Peter Sellars for Glyndebourne.
I really do think this will go down as one of the most moving operatic/oratorio performances of the modern age. Hunt Lieberson was an absolute marvel as Irene.
I had the luck to go to Theodora at Glyndebourne for this run. Quite simply the best thing I have ever ever seen. The audience throughout were very very quiet and intense , waited for a good 20 or 30 sec after the lights faded and then totally erupted. I think everybody came out emotionally exhausted - I certainly was!
I don't know if there could ever be a more profoundly touching performance than this.
Breathless and timeless
........haar stem, stijlgevoel en grote inlevingsvermogen. Gewoon (bijna) niet te evenaren. Mijn grote dank.
Well, she is now experiencing that endless Light, together with Haendel. Amazing
she is like Callas, so committed in music, I adore this clip forever
She also knew the importance of the lyrics not just music.
I am blown away.what a stunning set and Hunt Lieberson is So convincing. Love her voice. Sad to know she is" late" as my great aunt would say. Handel does such wonderful women's characters.
Absolutely and utterly sublime. Moments like these, I believe, happen very rarely. A perfect synergy of amazing staging, masterful acting and singing that comes as a result of pure dedication and passion and one of Händel's most touching musical moments.
The acting and physical staging are lacking, sadly, but her vocal acting is solid.
Such beauty no words can describe.
We were blessed to have her talent and spirit to lift us up!
Easy to lose all sense of time and place listening to this aria. Totally transported away on a cloud over a vast ocean of melody and emotion.
She is a poem!
Melpômene, cantami o Diva!
An amazing experience to listen Lorraine, anytime, every
time!
So beautiful,
This was the greatest combination of simultaneous music, singing, and acting I have ever seen on any stage. This woman was a goddess. I hope that in her final moments she remembered this performance, and realized that she had done all that any artist can ever do: she gave the world a perfect thing.
So well said
Your words made me cry. I miss her so much.
Thanks for that. It's exceedeingly beautiful and allows us to listen and see Lorraine Hunt again and again.

Emotioneel en ingetogen: prachtig!
Deeply moving...
Lovely
Esta producción de Theodora es inolvidable. Y Lorraine Hunt Lieberson es formidable. Creo que pocas producciones llegan al nivel de expresividad al que llega esta puesta. La síntesis de Sellars es admirable. Gracias por compartir!
Sublimissime !
Fragile creatures, LORD, are we. Mere vessels here of earth and clay.
Soul, look not unto thyself. JESUS only canst thou help.
"Triumphant Saviour! LORD of Day. Thou art the Life, the Light, the Way!"
thank you
I say without fear of exaggeration Theodora is Handel's greatest oratorio and Lorraine is supremely qualified to carry its bounty of Beauty.
It was also his personal favorite out of all of his oratorios, including his more famous oratorio “The Messiah”.
Merveilleuse voix divine voix!
I adore this singing and the musician playing the basset clarinet onstage interacting it’s simply magnificent. NOT good are the fermati that Mozart did not write. They kill the architecture of a genius are and ruin tension rather than add to it.
Bravi Singer and Basset Clarinet.
Handel wrote Theodora

I'm an atheist to my core. But there's a part of me that wishes there were a heaven, just so that maybe one day I could go there and hear her sing again.
What a lovely thought ❤
I worship at her altar. "When she sang, time itself stopped to listen."
This is pure magic. Great music, and an interpretation out of this world. Sheer genius.
Lorraine, we need you so much now, now that you're gone.
Her voice was the sound of a stream, as if humanity were a flow of something necessary and passionate, nurturing, hurting and hurtful, confused, gentle, tendentious and wondrous.
And, it is.
Magnifique ! Elle habitée par son personnage!!
Sensationelle Perfomance
Thank you for posting, this lady is a favourite, the aria so apt for these dark times
Magnifique !!!!
If for no other reason, this performance is why she is more than deserving of her legendary status. Her acting skills are on some level .... where AS SHE CLEARLY FELT IT , I FELT IT as intensely. As great as she is, it's not Lieberson that deseves ALL the credit, nor Jesus, but,.... HANDEL, who brought this benevolent and ravishing spirit to earth.
Who could possibly want to distract attention from her with that gyrating bunch behind her?
She was such a loss. It's not just her voice but also her emotional intelligence. For my money she is the greatest Theodora we shall ever see/hear..
Actually, in this production she's playing the part of Irene. Does anyone know if she ever played Theodora?
Xavier Waterkeyn Yes she played Theodora opposite Drew Minter as Didymus in 1992
She was a soprano earlier in her career but really bloomed in lower roles later. Still sad about her loss all these years later. I love this production.
