Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined other world leaders, as they paid tribute to the allied troops who stormed the Normandy beaches in June 1944, beginning the campaign to liberate north western Europe from German occupation.
It was to prove a turning point in the battle against Hitler's Nazis. From Normandy, our correspondent Andy Davies reports.

Imo they should also have the Soviet flag to remember all the Russian , Ukrainian, Central asian soldiers who lost their lives in the fight. Although they were fighting on a different front, without their sacrifice the D day success wouldn't have been possible. Russia joined the Nazis in 1939. The Soviet invasion of Poland is what enabled Hitler to launch Blitzkreig westward capturing France and making D-Day necessary. Hitler couldn't have Blitzed France so easily if the Wehrmacht had to maintain its eastern defenses.
Meanwhile Ukranians had suffered a genocide during the 1930s that killed around 4 million. When the Nazis invaded, millions more Ukranians died as they fought in the Soviet army, while others joined the partisans and had to fight BOTH the Nazis and Russians. Now Putin is behaving exactly like Hitler: invading Russia's European neighbors, murdering civilians and POWs, suppressing dissent in occupied territory with fake elections, and assassinating his political rivals.
Ukraine was supposed to remain outside of NATO. The Warsaw Pact countries were considered a buffer zone between the capitalist western powers and the communist USSR. Once the Berlin Wall fell and we had a chance for peace and reconciliation. NATO should either have been disbanded or invited Russia to join. It says a lot about western governments that they didn’t grasp that peace with everyone’s hands.
