Come on, who's going to tackle that compound box? ;)
You know Matt man, there are a lot of great makers that put out some fantastic, informative and valuable content, but there are few I would care if I ever met in person. You on the other hand, I'd like to be friends with. Your genuine, good-hearted, honest nature is refreshing and inspiring.
I think I can speak for all of us when I say - you are greatly appreciated!
hear hear
Aye!
And glad you collected some Vitamine D out there 😉👍
Absolutely agree with this comment!
this!
Maybe it would be a cool idea to see how many boxes could you produce in your shop in the same time period. Like go full balls to the wall machines and everything. I think it would be interesting to see the difference and you would get a lot more boxes to give out to people. Also it would be interesting to watch designing a production run. Like take the 3 boxes you designed here and make small production runs of them in different woods or something. See how techniques and tactics change.
What a fantastic thing to do, good on ya Matt, great videos all along but this one, Wow!
Well done Matt.
You have inspired me. Thank you for taking the time to record your journey and teaching as you go.
Really enjoyable Matt! I gave all gardenworkshop videos my thumbsUp as you went and now also subscribed.. These like-&-subscribe things are actions I always carefully consider and you won me over! One of the key things I took away from this series is to accept my humble workspace setup as it currently is and just do my woodworking without feeling limited by my space and in fact I find more open space in my mind because of this change of attitude..
830 likes, 0 dislikes. That says it all! Really enjoyable series and beautiful boxes for a great cause. Those compound dovetails made my eyes ache.
we love to see you making things with your brilliant woodworking skills well done loved it.
Awesome series, Matt. It was great to see you overcome the weather, the noise, the lack of machines and especially the rickety workbench. It's so cool (for you and for us!) that the process has helped renew your passion for the work.
I love these boxes, and you
This series has been very great! I just used your tip on filling dovetail gaps with solid wood and a ball peen hammer and I thank you for showing us that even pros make mistakes! It’s just how you fix them determines how great of a woodworker you are! Keep up the good work and I look forward to continuing to learn from you!
Really, really love how the boxes turned out. I must admit (and I'm probably not the only one) I had so many doubts about the whole concept of this series initially. I was like, 'Boxes? For NHS workers? That's about as helpful as clapping.' I was still hooked right from the beginning, though, and the further into the series, the clearer it became how wrong I had been because a fine furniture maker's 'box' is a far cry from anything I could build... if not ever then at least right now. Won't stop me from trying, though :)
awesome build brother! 😊
So glad to see/hear you got your mojo back Matt!
thank you for sharing your knowledge of woodworking with us. you are one of the best really enjoy your videos look forward to more thank you
This was awesome
Coming next Spring: Baby Bertha™
Creating an in-between workmate/workbench for a small space would be nice. 2021 Baby Boxes™ too.
Idea in advance for the next garden workshop: Construct a portable mini bertha.
Nah. I'm a sadist. Suffer with the saw horse table Matt.
Get all your viewers to make the remaining 48 boxes
Lesson learned: Install windows in the woodshop.
Why not Linux? 😉😉
@@InfectedByEli Why did I not think of that? I would probably get better results with the chubby penguin.
Could go for Solaris. Best of both an OS and a light source.
I miss Rob...☹️☹️ Otherwise, it was a brilliant series.
Hey, Matt... This is the best series you've ever done. I loved it.
Whilst you could have possibly filmed in your workshop, you have been brilliant in being a ‘shed’ woodworker like a lot of us. I now feel more enthusiastic about using hand tools rather than go for the power option. Looked forward to the updates. Well done
I second this. I often feel like a lot of woodworking youtubers are using such expensive tools that I don't have access to. This series and a lot of Rob Cosmon's are strong motivators for me to jump into this world!
@@Kiss4cooper Check out Rex Kruger's channel. He has a "Woodworking for Humans" series where he uses inexpensive tools to make some really nice stuff including a traditional joiners bench out of construction grade timber
Matt I am glad that you found your mojo again. Your videos and instruction are what have inspired me to be a woodworker. I retired a couple years ago just about when I came across your channel. I look forward to each of your videos and always learn something new. Each day is a blessing and we need to show our appreciation and your way of sharing is a great example of that. Hang in there man and I can't wait for you to get back in the shop with the new inspiration. Oh BTW, the boxes are fantastic. Much respect, take care.
I really like that you are going to be continuing this series in the future.
You’re a good man Matt. Don’t give up.
Im a cabinet maker, I always enjoy your videos.
I’m asked a lot by people wanting to learn various aspects of woodworking, and I always point them towards your Chanel. It’s a valuable place for people to visit to gain the knowledge they need.
Bumped into your channel by accident and have loved every second of this series. I am just starting to get into wood working with hand tools at the age of 60. This has just been totally inspirational. 🙏🏻🙏🏻😎😎🙏🏻🙏🏻
YOU motivate people as well my friend!!! Don’t take yourself for granted you make awesome vids that are entertaining and educational I’ve learned a lot from you and I THANK YOU!!
Don’t stop making your videos Matt. They are unquestionably the BEST woodworking videos on UA-cam. Soooo educational, professionally produced and delivered and you seem like the most decent guy ever. I’m an ex-pat living in Australia just starting on my woodworking journey and I wish I could attend a face to face workshop with you teaching. Keep up the good work. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Great work Matt, and inspiring to see you back motivated! Plans downloaded ready to go. 👍🏻
Cheers
Hey, Matt. Your channel has inspired me to take up woodworking as a hobby. What keeps me coming back for more is the mix of solid theory and practice, tempered by humor and genuine warmth. Keep it up and don’t stop!
I'm really happy your feeling better about your direction, and also about continuing the video series! I enjoy them and find them motivating & useful.
A beautiful thing to do for us viewers. Such a awesome channel I get so much out of it. And I thank you for that. Stay strong and keep doing what your doing it’s amazing
What a great thing to do!! I've only just discovered your channel recently, and already I've learnt so much!! Love your delivery too. Very informative and enjoyable!
Great to see those boxes finished , I really enjoyed the whole process . Good to see you with some new creative energy . Looking forward for the next video.
For me, this is the best series you've done. Raw and plain skills being shown with minimal tooling. Awesome.
Matt, you’re an International treasure for students of wood. Happy for you that this series has been healthful for you and looking forward to many more episodes.
I've watched a lot of woodworking videos on UA-cam and this is miles ahead of all of them. Anyone can woodwork in a workshop. It takes some moxie to woodwork in your backyard. Matt was a super trooper in this whole series. He does look like he has some healthier color about him now too.
tip for the next garden series: prior to going to the garden build a Moravian portable workbench!
Just well bloody done Matt, this has been essential viewing during lockdown for me. Your authenticity and integrity shines through. Stay solid bro!
I caught part of a great Tv program, looking at how architecture affects people. The one I saw examined how natural light makes a difference. They took several volunteers, went to their homes and drastically reduced window sizes, and even completely blocked some. After 2 weeks, without exception the people were listless, de-motivated, constantly tired, irritable and generally just not having a good time.
Remove the curtains mate :)
Hey Matt, this series is phenomenal. I should have mentions the vitamin D you missed out on! I take every piece of equipment out of my shop when there a beautiful day out because even if you get half the work done as in a normal day, being outside I’m great weather just makes working so enjoyable. Play some music, get a tan, enjoy the sunlight and personally I bring my dog out with me so working 10hrs straight outside feels like Half the time and it just makes life feel a little bit better inside. As much as working in a controlled environment can be nice, there’s nothing better than a little bit of beautiful Mother Earth. You’ve slowly become my favorite UA-cam I’ve the course of the last few months and if you ever need a partner for raids on OSRS, just know I’m only a few CB levels away from getting a T Bow solo. Maybe I can help you get your own!
Fair play Matt they turned out great, good cause too!
This has been an outstanding series. I am very happy that you are re-energized. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us.
Covid19 has hit us all very badly. I am on the NHS frontline, dealing with dying people - I have found woodworking and your channel ..idk, therapeutic? Cutting and planning timber helps me to relax and reduce stress levels. One day I will tackle those dovetails. Thanks for your uploads - don't give up.
Hey mate, I work for the NHS (Mental Health Secure Services), but have been shielding for health reasons. Your vids have inspired me to get into woodworking as a hobby, and in doing so have helped me to stay positive/ productive. Gifting those boxes to NHS staff brought a huge lump to my throat. You a top bloke......thanks man.
Awesome series, Matt. Just learned that Boris was in full party mode while you were sequestered in your backyard, but you've got more fans to show for it. You've definitely got one here in Michigan, USA. I'd love to share a beer with you and set you up with my sister, but, alas, she's too old. Cheers!
I've watched a lot of woodworkers and makers but keep coming back to Matt and Paul Sellers. Seeing super talented craftsmen work with tools I could buy (and fit in my small garage) is really inspiring.
I'd love for the recurring garden workshop to focus on making high-end work with few/cheap tools, to motivate new woodworkers with less money :)
Hi Matt. Well done - great work. I'd actually stopped watching your vids regularly after having been quite a fan, and v inspired by your work (even visited Rycotewood to check it out 😊), not 'cos they were bad, but just 'cos like you say, they'd sort of lost direction a bit. Anyway, this series has been right on the nail - really inspiring, and a great showcase for your v impressive skills... (and rather impressive set of handtool tools 😊) Oh, and it also reminded me that you seem a really nice guy. Nice gesture with the gifts at the end btw.
Well done Matt, I’ve really enjoyed the series and your deserved box winners will i’m sure appreciate your efforts. It just goes to show, whilst a large workshop is great you can get away with minimal space and tools.
You, Paul Sellars and a couple of other craftsmen have kept me busy during the isolation period and I’ve really got into using hand tools only - Thank you and keep up the good work!
If UA-cam was introducing the 3 thumbs up sign, you would fully deserve it for this series. It has been informative, refreshing, innovative and done with a very big heart. Many thanks for it, I really had fun watching it.
Matt Estlea, the Björn Borg of woodworkers.
Now you can shave that mess off your face 😉🤣😂
Matt, I just wanted to sincerely say that this is your best video, it shows you “real”. Like most people comments state, you give a ton of info for us to learn from it, but, showing yourself sensitive and fully aware says to me: this is a person I can follow.
Thank you, sincerely, for all the great work you do, and don’t loose focus.
From Chile with respect.
Francisco.
Awesome work Matt, and I love the idea of the annual charity. Why not make it a challenge? Whatever you are making for charity, we have to make as well - 50 boxes on your own would be a long summer, but as a group effort..... (not that anyone would consider it any sort of honor to receive a box I make in the garden....)_
Other folks do that sort of thing all the time.
Though I’m not from the UK I did run in to you at Axminster once by chance, while I was on my way to Sturminster to visit friends. I had just started following your videos and enjoyed the expertise and enthusiasm of your channel. You gave me some sound advise while we met and even inspired me to finally build a workbench. Lately I didn’t wait for the next video and must admit, I lost interest a little. The last couple of weeks however have been a joy, loved every minute of it, recognised the old Matt again. You’re an inspiration, a true professional and I hope you’ll stay on this route, stay healthy mate!
Hey Matt, I don’t give a crap about the lighting for your camera shots, open the windows ! It’s no fun working in a cave !
You are a bright lad. I'm some years older than you and I'm proud of you. Thanks for your not-small colaboration. Keep up!
I really enjoyed the garden workshop series. And I agree with everything you said in your conclusion. Especially letting daylight into your workshop again will be beneficial. We all live in a changing environment ruled by the sun, blocking the sun out creates an unnatural distance. Maybe even use some light reflectors to direct the sunlight where you need it. Thank you!
Hey Matt, I really enjoyed this series! Going back to more rudimentary and foundational hand tools while working out in the sun (and rain) is inspiring and a breath of fresh air (see what I did there?) Overall, excellent series with a charitable give away doesn't get any better than that! Kudos and stay safe as we continue to navigate covid 19 ! We will get through this and be better because of it! Thanks for everything!
Really enjoyed the series...
I like to work with wood but only have the basic tools and a garage, and this shows what can be achieved with a minimum set-up of kit.
I hope everything will become good for you and your family. Greetings from Germany 👍
What a STAR! Great series - made this bad time better. Thanks a tonne! All hail the garden workshop :-)
Honestly I had notice that the content had been going down but I couldn't pinpoint the reason I had always enjoyed the content but not as much. This series totally brought it back for me. I'm so happy to see you getting your "mojo" back with wood working and am excited for the new videos to come. For me I enjoy the person and the character of the youtuber as 70% of the the videos quality and the other 30 is the content. I think see you enjoying it again and not worrying so much about whether it would work out or not is what made this so enjoyable for me.
Really good Matt. Those boxes are great and better because of the trials of working in the backyard. Well done.
Your videos are much better when you work alone!! Way more engagement with your viewers. 👍
Next year you should build a portable stable workshop of some sort. Could be interesting
I am going to miss this. I have really enjoyed this journey with you. Thank you
Dear Matt, what do you think about taking challenges more often? With a poll or something else, because these make the best series. Love the videos by the way
Well done Matt, I did a charity thing last year for our local church, I turned and made up 25 slim line twist ball point pens for them to sell at a Christmas bazar .
you Sir are a real gent. It was kind of wierd seeing those really expensive handtools being used in a back garden. In your hands they made three amazing gifts for three amazing people. Well done mate.
All the boxes look amazing. the angled boxes are my favourite, but torn between them as to which is best
Nice set of plans and for £1 its a bargain for one of the best set of videos on UA-cam after all your hard work to help others the least I could do is spend a £1. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
I'm definitely buying the plans! You have given us so many techniques here, what a treasure trove. Matt, I've so enjoyed this series and I was thrilled when you announced that it will become an annual event. What a gorgeous gift for the winners. Those boxes will become treasured items as a memory of kindness in a troubled and difficult time.
Really great series done by a very talented young man, spot on, Matt. Thank you for highlighting your experience with Vitamine D, I will change my life, workplace and move to a place just get get more of nature, singing birds and sunlight. Keep on going, Matt, you are a great artist.
Great series with some excellent tips that I will be adopting for sure. As an owner of a shed similar to yours may I suggest a series designing and fitting storage in there? 😎
You’re an inspiration! Thank you for awesome how to do it videos.
I think it is a great idea to do a short series and n the garden . It makes you very relatable to ordinary people who do not have a proper workshop or bench or a vast array of expensive machines. Well done indeed.
Great series Matt, thank you & congratulations to the winners.
Great gifts Matt for truly worthy recipients!
You're crushing it dude. Fuckin crushing it!
Well done mate really enjoyed the series. Could agree more re vitamin D.
There was never a chance the series WOODEN work!
Dig it - very cool thing to do
I love watching all your videos
This is the best series you've done in ages Matt! Back to basics no frills stuff. Really enjoyable!
You're the fucking man.
Brilliant series and amazing craftsmanship
Really enjoyed this series Matt.
Well done to those who won.
purely inspirational....Thank you.
Great work, great cause. Brilliant series.
Learned a lot from this series. Thanks for the tips
Well done for what you have achieved.
Thanks for this series. It reminded me of a few things I've done in my garage. Super entertaining and a good distraction considering what's been going on over here.
awesome build brother! 😊
Can’t wait for the last video Matt I’ve been trying to dimension stuff in the hot sun on a wobbly bench too I hope you can do better than me
Nice job for a worthy cause.
Fantastic job, Matt! Really beautiful boxes! 😃
Congrats to the winners!!!
Stay safe, everybody! 🖖😊
This might seem like I’m being negative, but it’s an honest comment about your channel. This was a particularly good set of videos, it reminded me of your early stuff, very relatable and compulsive viewing. I think they are remarkably better considering the previous set of videos around the mezzanine and setting up your workshop, which although interesting wasn’t much fun to watch. Also the other guy in those videos isn’t good on camera, he comes across like he thinks he’s being funnier and more witty than he actually is, and often it looks like you’re tolerating him rather than enjoying his presence and it detracts from the content. Yikes! Sorry if that’s harsh, just how it comes across 😬
:(
Nice one Matt. 👍👍
Keep the hair and beard dude, it suits you
