Do you know that Dussehra and Vijaydashmi are two separate events and not just one festival with two names?
Dussehra and Vijaydashmi happen to fall on the same day and are hence celebrated together. But there is this striking difference between them.
Let's know the difference with... The Mystic Tales.
Let's begin with the story behind Dussehra:
The word Dussehra itself is a combination of two words; Dus means Ten, and Hara means Defeat.
The Epic Ramayan describes the story of Lord Ram, who was the exiled prince of Kingdom Ayodhya. While in exile, he lived in the forest with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman.
One day Sita was abducted by Ravan, who was an asur and the king of the island of Lanka.
Ravan was an asur with ten heads. Hence, came to be known as a 'Ten Headed Raksha',
each of his heads symbolises ten different emotional states Which are;
Kam (lust)
Krodh (anger)
Moh (delusion)
Lobh (greed)
Garv (pride)
Irsha (envy)
Buddhi (intellect)
Manas (mind)
Chitt (will)
Ahankar (ego)
Lord Ram requested Ravan to release his wife, but he didn't agree to it. Ram, assisted by Hanuman and accompanied by Lakshman, created an army and attacked Lanka. It led to a massive war in which Ravan got killed by Ram.
Therefore, Dussehra stands for the destruction of ten evil faces of Ravan and is celebrated as the day of victory of good over evil.
Now, the story behind Vijay Dashmi:
Vijaydashmi is also a composition of two words; Vijay, which means Victory and Dashmi, which means 10th Day. According to Puran, Mahisasur was an asur who received a boon from Bramha,
that no man and god would be able to kill him. As a result of this newfound strength,
he soon started misusing his power and became unbearable.
Since no god can kill him; Bramha, Vishnu & Shiv combined their powers and created Goddess Durga to bring about an end to Mahishasur's ravaging.
Durga fought with Mahisasur for 9-days and finally killed him on the 10th day. Hence the name Vijaydashmi.
