In this video, I show an easy method for reaching huge combos in Tales of Vesperia. I'm using Yuri in this video but you can do this with anybody, really.

I don’t get it, I can ever pick my combo up after a free-run attack to make the enemy stand back up, and half the time my free run attack misses, or doesn’t even happen despite free-running the enemy. I am playing manual rather than semi, is that part of my problem?

Manual is not the issue. It’s hard to aim the free run attack. The whole point of doing the free run attack is that you can instantly attack right after so I’m not sure why it won’t let you attack after doing it

@@Swashed_ Yep, even tried Semi-Auto and still wouldn’t work. For manual, the attack would miss, swing right over them or just to left or right missing their hit box. For Semi-Auto it would hit, the enemy would stand up but then my combo would reset after hitting them.

For Yuri, you get combo plus from the Blue Dragon sword which is crafted using synthesis.

I'm glad you asked :)
Doing high combos is a good way to get LOTS of grade. You are awarded a set amount of grade for hitting 20-50-70-100 combo and it's more each time. Also, you trigger a lot of fatal strikes chains. You get 0.2 grade for each fatal strike chain. With a big combo, you can easily get 60-100 grade PER BATTLE.
There are better ways to get grade, but they're all endgame methods. This method can be done as soon as you unlock overlimit (basically at the start of the game). So if you play around with combos once in a while in your playthrough, you'll already have a lot of grade by the time you beat the game.
Grade is used in a grade shop, which is presented to you at the end of the game and allows you to play through again with modifiers such as 10x exp.
Also you can unlock special titles and achievements for doing big combos :)

Hey grade faster with super quick battles. Get 5 grade every 30 seconds vs5 minutes for 25

If you have the tension skills then you can just chain some spammy attacks to hit that first OL. If you have the mystic arte I think that itself can do 30 hits
