  • Based on the novel by Frank Herbert, the adaptation of "Dune" directed by Denis Villeneuve is the most anticipated movie of the year. Two tracks from composed by Hans Zimmer ("Paul's Dream" and "Ripples in the Sand") have been published a few days ago, giving us a 12-minutes long preview of the actual musical score of the movie.
Hans Zimmer's score seems to be incredibly rich and ambitious in tones, unique sounds and melodies. The main musical theme recognizable from the music (which I suppose is Paul's theme) is characterized by female hummings, giving it an incredible mysterious, fascinating and epic touch. I hope you'll like this re-edited montage of these first two tracks from "Dune", I'll definitely await the release of more musical content by Hans Zimmer for this project!
    Tracklist:
    0:00 Paul's Dream
    4:30 Ripples in the Sand
    6:05 Ripples in the Sand
    7:28 Ripples in the Sand
    8:23 Ripples in the Sand
    9:29 Paul's Dream

Totally agree. I also think people connected because of the themes of fear. Nobody wants to be a bad person, just like how Paul doesn't want to be an opressor. watched Dune for the first time without reading any novel or any relevant material. First half of the movie I constantly have this thought, why is it so similar to Star Wars but feels a lot darker? Totally amazed by its screenplay, mise-en-scene, soundtracks. Love it's universe. Then after the movie, I googled it up and found out goddamn it George Lucas actually took a lot of inspiration from Dune.

    • @Filmsmith129
      @Filmsmith129 2 роки тому +67

@GamerKat'71 Yeah. And they often draw on history as well. Just like how King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table are heavily inspired by Charlemagne and the Paladins, Dune frequently has things that noticeably parallel the British Empire's conquest of India for its spices.

    • @Filmsmith129
      @Filmsmith129 2 роки тому +125

It's really funny how Tatooine is like made up of jokes and references to Dune that are constantly happening in the background. Like how in the first movie, when C-3PO and R2-D2 are wandering in the desert (a reference to Paul and Jessica's escape and travel across the deserts of Arrakis) C-3PO worries about being sent to "the spice mines" and then we see, in the background, something that looks like it MIGHT be a skeleton of a sandworm (They later retconned this to be something called a Krayt Dragon, which, as we see in The Mandalorian, is basically a sandworm). There are PLENTY more references, and there were even more in the original script, like how Force powers were called Jedi-Bendu, a reference to the Bene Gesserit physical training (where things like the Voice come from) called "prana-bindu."
And then in Return of the Jedi the director thought "Wait, we're heading back to Tatooine. Let's do MORE DUNE JOKES." And so the Sarlacc pit is based on the scene where the giant worm eats the spice harvester, and Jabba the Hutt looks like the God-Emperor of Dune, this strange human-sandworm hybrid person from the fourth book.
Reading Dune made me appreciate Star Wars MORE and not less. It took a world that looks kind of like Dune's and said "Okay, now let's do some good ol' Flash Gordon swashbuckling in this."

Like, was it ever explained why Thufir had these weird eyes and what a mentat even is? Was the Butlerian Jihad even mentioned in any dialogue? Or was the imperial conditioning of doctor Yueh explained in any detail? Just to make it clear - I'm not bashing you in any way, quite contrary I'm saying the 2021 Dune is rather simplistic in what lore it actually shows on screen and that's really sad, because they could do much better.

The comparison with the old David Lynch movie is legitimate.
Let's just not forget Dune retro PC games. They definitely must have been a source of inspiration for Hans Zimmer and Denis Villeneuve, who must have picked an eye or two (or even three) (or an ear) (or two, etc...) on them.
    The atmosphere, the caracters designs.
Watch Javier Bardem, and dare to tell me it's not the exact same posture/attitude/face expression/gaze than the fremen sietchs chiefs we were meeting in Dune I. Just the same. Can't tell you how satisfying this is for old geeks.
((For the interested ones, 2 top absolute legends of retro gaming, :
Dune I, by Cryo Interactive and edited by Virgin Games in 1992, (I think it's an abandonware, so free to play and easy to find),
So good, beautiful, and mesmerizing mix of RPG/real time/adventure game, totally following Dune scenario.
Flying Ornitopteres (no clue how its called in english :p) or riding worms later to find fremens sietchs in the desert and rally them while managing spice harvesting for the emperor untill rebellion, war effort against Harkonens, and ecology.
The game uses Kyle MacLachlan and Sting's faces from the David Lynch movie btw.
A dedicated and passionnated work, bringing lots of attention into all the aspects of the game.
    Atmosphere, music, graphics and gameplay.
And Dune II, by Westwood Studio still edited by Virgin Games in 1992,
Which is just THE father of all RTS games. THE origin of this kind of games.
Doom is to FPS what Dune II is to RTS.
Remastered later with Dune 2000, starring John Rhys-Davies as an Atreides mentor.))

God, Hans Zimmer never fails to get my arms tingling. He and and the composers for the witcher games are, I think, the best in their field.

1:50 those bass risers are so cool sounding
Also the turbine-cutting-wind (I don’t remember the technical term but you hear it best at 2:01 and 2:16) effects are also so fuckin cool

"turbine-cutting-wind" - nicely put! I was wondering what would be a good term for it. You can also hear it used heavily throughout the cathartic end of "The Shortening of the way" that starts at ua-cam.com/video/C4-tb4x-tcE/v-deo.html

That part is VERY Vangelis-like. There is a similar effect in the middle of the song Chariots of Fire which is about 20 min long and is the B side of that soundtrack album. It’s the first thing I thought of when I heard this. But the music brilliantly capture the awesome power of nature represented by the sand worm. Both awe-Inspiring and terrifying at the same time. Showing how insignificant humanity is in face of the nature. That scene hands down was fucking incredible and so compelling !

I hardly have a lot of esteem for Hans Zimmer's usual music production process, but let's be honest : this is one of his most inspired works.

I can't imagine Zimmer not winning the Best Movie Soundtrack prize this year, it's incredibly deep, mysterious, menacing and beautifull at the same time. Wow

This score better win the Oscar. It’s phenomenal that Zimmer managed to create the sounds for a new world . Literally that seat shaking percussion hit was beautiful.

@@rewnewl__6803 the soundtrack totally deserves the award, but it might be hard because of power of the dog. The Academy has some thing against sci fi. Interstellar soundtrack lost to the Grand Budapest Hotel for goodness sake. Crossing my fingers because this soundtrack deserves an Oscar and so does Hans Zimmer

I kid you not the scene where their excavators get eaten is a movie moment I will never forget. I never even heard of the series but the movie was grand and that scenes music was so incredible I actually felt the music and the actual sights on screen to be of equal or greater level and it didn’t feel like background noise like the music was the movie ❤
