I'm a massive fan of HHKB layout keyboards. Usually, people see the moved backspace and no arrow keys and lose their minds, but the relocation of the backspace is ideal when typing; much easier to reach while touch typing and control on caps is so much more useful, especially for anyone who spends a lot of time in emacs. Also the shortened right shift to allow a function key is awesome, allows for a lot of quick easy access to print screen, etc. without ever needing to look down at your keyboard. Once you go move to an HHKB layout you’ll never want to go back!
I've been using a HHKB (Pro 2) since 2013 and I've never used any other layout since then. I honestly cannot think of any keys that I'm missing out with the HHKB layout - and I do quite a bit of coding everyday - and I write lectures on a weekly basis... But given the lack of HHKB layout boards - I think this criterium has saved me quite a bit of money on impulsive keyboard purchases over the years...
Nice video. Glad to see people still care about these old machines and their peripherals
The lack of a ctrl key is just bizarre.
They have a version that has it. But yea the original mac didn't utilize a Ctrl key
Great video, as always. And it's cool to see the keyboard working on an actual Macintosh SE. 👍
I was sad about the CTRL key being missing until I realized I could just remap the keys a bit to make it useable! Their other keyboards are also pretty good looking.
But it's definitely will be a painful experience getting used to the new basic keybinds :(
Just a BTW... Vortex has two variants of the triple mode keyboard -- one with a 7u spacebar, and one with a 6.25u spacebar and two control keys. From your teardown, it may work to just insert switches in the hotswap sockets, and they might work,
Yup you can change the switches on the fly, no need to unplug it or change modes or anything. Highly recommend some mods as well depending on user preference. I removed all the silicone (pcb and lower case insert), added some PE switch pads and rubber o-rings inside the case where the top and bottom case connect. All of these improve sound volume and resonance in a good way, make the side profile look similar to the original reference board and actually allow the gaskets to help isolate the plate from the case. Long pole or clicky switches also take it to another level.
Wish they would make a replica of the Data General Dasher terminal keyboards. Those were some cool looking keyboards.
This is a nice video thanks for the videos. I have been a fan since 2020
The BlueTooth chip certainly makes it a great option for use with portable devices. Now they just need to make a folding version that still has good key caps.
I fell out of the (modern) keyboard world a while back, had no idea there was one of these in mass production. Absolutely lovely looking thing. My biggest qualm would be the backspace...I'd gladly trade the Delete key away to have the backspace in a more normal spot, and a 1.5u \ key under it. Looks absolutely killer paired with the SE. Classic Macs never looked right with ADB keyboards imo
you are the only one that can entertain me on this app
I’ll be honest, not having a native control key is a total deal breaker for anyone who heavy uses shortcuts tied to control
@@DirtyGingy ok i checked the video. losing the caps lock or right shift is not an adequate replacement for having a control key in the bottom right and left of the keyboard in the standard location. end of story.
A keyboard without the Matilda key is dead to me
love your videos
I love this keyboard!!
I do wish they had an option for the keycaps to all be the original dark grey/beige and also the numpad version is missing arrow keys (by default) which the original M0110A has
Earliest I've been to a Michael MJD video :)
Like your vids Michael good job!
Hey MJD I alway wonder where did you came up with that name of the channel. I
look at your old videos but never knew where did that name came from . Love to hear from the start to where you are now. ps love ur watch vid
This seems like its essentially a HHKB layout especially with the control key replacing the caps lock
yea that was the point of the hhkb was to be like the unix terminals from that era, which also coinsides with the macs of the era
I want one with a custom layout and a function row. I wanted a mechanical keyboard but nearly all of them don’t have room for a tilde/back ticks key for programming like a standard Mac keyboard.
It looks so sick and you can buy it nowadays, connect to the modern pc, so you can make a retro setup, but I miss ctrl…
That's a very nice & interesting keyboard. 💯 👌
now we just need the mouse!!
>Replica of Mac keyboard
>Software is Windows only
???
I believe it's because of the control chip they use in the keyboard, that itself is likely used on multiple keyboard models for which the chip manufacturer probably provided a base app source code repository that would then be customised for different keyboard models.
i love it!🎉
If my grandparents use newer products I would give this one to them
Very nice 😊
Can you set the alt key to be ctrl when you press the fn key?
This layout is very similar to the Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB).
i believe the HHKB layout was created in the 90s in homage to the original Macintosh keyboard. So yes, it's very similar! It's its child! 😁
nice, an mjd where nothing goes wrone.
congrats on nearly 500k subs
The vertical deflection on that SE30 is too small, image is vertically squished, hurts my eyes. Good review - but: You talked while typing on the keyboard, the kind of people who would be interested in these would be very keen on knowing of how these replica keys sound. After all the original with its Alps keys is revered by many for its delicious sound signature.
When is the compaq saga getting a part 2?
19K views might not sound like much, but this was typed 2 DAYS after this video was uploaded
wii usb loader gx can save in wii memorycard??
1:05 Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 disappeared for unknown reasons!
I think there got something messed up… my „windows on Mac/mac keyboard on windows“ experience was that the „windows“ button on Mac Lay-outs is the „clover“ button, aka. the „command“ button. Also the „Mac symbol“ on the „code key“ would be on the alt key on a real Mac keyboard.
If I’m wrong, educate me and give me resources to look it up pls ;)
That's more to allow swapping between OS's and having an expected layout. I believe this keyboard, rather then committing to one layout or the other, automatically switches based on the computer it's using, or at least, is marked with the matching symbols.
The Windows/Command keys are functionally the same, and often called the Super key. The issue is that the layouts are different depending on the keyboard. The right hand side of a standard PC keyboard is Control/Super/Alt, and on an Apple keyboard its Control/Alt/Super.
This is an issue when you mix and match keyboards with different OS's, and it can go against the users muscle memory. For example, on Mac OS, to refresh the page I would use Command+R, whereas using an Apple keyboard on Windows that same physical movement would be Windows+R and launch Run. It's likely that most users wont do this, but to spare any confusion, I believe they made it so it would be standard to the operating system, rather then the user having to figure out what the standard mapping is.
Hi, that's a nice keyboard. It looks a lot like a vintage Apple keyboard.
Btw I like your videos.
I don't think hooking it up to the vintage mac is pointless at all, seems like the natural thing to me.
The turned down offers fuming rn 💀
good keep up the good work Michal hey Micheal i trying to dual boot Linux mint on my dell inspiron 1150 i would try to install it would just leave me with a dos line
Ah yes, bought a Mac Plus in 1989 and it had this same keyboard.
The lack of cursor keys is a NO THANKS ..Believe me, I had one. Having to press multiple keys for cursor or other keys is terrible.
A Keyboard for the rest of us.
I'd love to get this but $150 is too far outside my price range.
Hey finally I’m early!
You should really make a video on CrossCraft by @Iridescence
I heard there’s a Windows, Linux, 3DS, PSVita and even PSP port!
That keyboard does not look like the original one. Very strange the concept of replica.
I mean, it's meant for modern use and uses lower profile switches and is more targeted to the custom keyboard market while being a reference to the original, but not a 1:1 recreation.
If they were trying to be more accurate, they would lose a lot of potential customers from it being so damn tall
i need it
History and TechImma1st
It's cute but I prefer full size PC keyboards.
watch 7 minutes without something pointless: scared
8 min ,something useless: sigh of relieve
ima buy
Return it, get the original or a m10116, Cherry mx switches are pretty afwul.
@@gearsgamer7115 💀 i bought another keyboard on kalihs red lol, just yesterday
Daaamn didn't expect the mechanical keyboard hobby to bleed into your channel in a way 👀
Ughh Cherry (clones) … Do a version with Topre and I'm in.
Ehh, topre is good, but how about ALPS. Now alps are the real deal, but topre do have thier advantages in being capacitive, having inherint n key rollover. Not bad, not that great, and for the price, I would go with alps (they have somehwat simmilarity in terms of feel, but have less "mush" on the bottom out). (still miles better than cherry mx sand duplicate)
@@gearsgamer7115 I’m a firm believer and I will stand guard at the Topre heavens till eternity. However I do recognize that Alps reign supreme over those puny Cherry peasants.

Shame that this has the weird American enter key, as opposed to the normal tall enter key.
The ANSI layout is used by more of the world than the ISO layout. Basically all of Asia except Japan, and all of the western hemisphere use ANSI. ISO is basically only used in Europe
Too bad it's not the Alps or Matias switch but then again, that's just what custom keyboard is nowadays.
ok
No ctrl key? Emacs users stay losing

Hello
To be more authentic, you should use the key cap puller to remove the key cap for the 7 key. I cannot see using this keyboard with modern devices since the keyboard does not have arrow keys among some other more modern keys, and it has the Del key in the wrong place.
You can map keys to layers. I use a 40% and I have all of the usual keys found on larger boards.
I liked my own comment.
beware this company has gone dark, last updates were last year based on discord
Funny, they are still shipping things and talking on their discord server. I just received my SSK from them a couple weeks ago
The keyboard itself may look nice, but the layout is garbage, considering they managed to add a useless Del key, an annoyingly located Fn key, they didn’t manage to find a place for Ctrl, and they replaced `~ with Esc. I doubt anyone would use this keyboard outside of a UA-cam video.
Did you even watch the video? You can remap keys and they included replacement caps so you can swap the caps key to CTRL like a HHKB.
@@nickthaskater I did watch the video, that’s where I saw the absurd layout. I’ve never heard of HHKB, and it seems to have most of the issues with strange placement of Backspace and Fn. You might be able to remap stuff on the Macintosh keyboard, but you need to remember that `~ lives on the key labeled "Del" or "|\" and that the right Backspace and Shift keys are in the wrong place.
@@Kwpolska I kinda agree. Layout is trash, but atleast it comes with good.... oh wait the switches suck, atleast its hotswa... oh wait the original can OPEN THE SWITCHES FROM THE TOP.
Ugh, atleast the original is better

Damn im early

How exciting! Replicas of classic computer keyboards are in production, like the ones for very old Macintosh computers in this case. Way to go, Vortex! I particularly would love to see replicas of HP computer peripherals of the early 2000s, such as keyboards and mice.
Well it’s very easy to walk out of a thrift store with old hp peripherals
@@superpacman256 Very true, although I have not tried that at all particularly due to functionality concerns. To find confidence that carrying on collecting functional HP peripherals from the good old days is possible, eBay can be the solution (depending on how they're priced).
Replicas, but they dont use a proper* mechanical switch.
*Proper in the sense that they lubed them to heck, foamed, etc. Makes them sound dead.
