      When filling with oil, note the following:
      - Remove oil plug .
      - Fill with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole.
      - Screw in plug .
      - Start engine, engage gear and allow gearbox to turn for ap‐
      prox. 2 minutes.
      - Stop engine and remove plug.
      - Top up with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole.
      - Tighten bolt to specified torque

      But the problem is that none of us have that uber pricey vehicle lift. Those are not cheap and most homes have no space for them.
      Even with ramps, it's a big challenge climbing under the car to undo all those bolts holding the damn air deflector in place just to drain tranny fluid.

  • @barabyjones3784

    This is great! Something to add, a few transmissions don’t have a fill hole (not clowning you). You have to fill from the selector bolt under the air box

    Great tutorial! Made it so much easier for me to do this myself. That being said, I tried the Motul Gear 300 and can say that I don't recommend it if you mostly daily drive this car with the occasional spirited run. It's VERY NOTCHY (especially if you have race gear bushings vs stock) and takes a long time before it warms up and smooths out for gear shifts. Sometimes I have to really put some effort into simply getting it in second gear. I'm planning on going back to the OEM oil.

    Always remove the fill plug first. If you drain it and then for some reason can't remove the fill plug then you're fucked. And the oil will come out the bottom smoother. You're not likely to run into any problems removing the fill plug yet as the mk7 is still new but it's a good practice. The procedure is the exact same for mk5 and I assume mk6 as well.

      I ran into this issue with an R32 gtr I used to have, trying to replace transfer case fluid. Luckily I did try to remove the filler plug first, proceeded to break every tool I had on it before giving up.

  • @blockbertus
    @blockbertus 8 років тому +94

    better to open the fill plug first before the drain. if the fill plug does not open your tran would have no fluid.

  • @MrSoulisTG
    @MrSoulisTG 8 років тому +8

    For my car many service manuals say that you fill the fluid until it starts dripping... close the filler plug... run the car in gear for 5 minutes... let it sit for a couple of minutes and re-check the fluid level from the filler plug... if it starts dripping the level is OK.. if not add some fluid until it starts dripping again !!!
    And in my opinion this is the best way to be 100% sure that the fluid quantity is correct. (although usually it doesnt need much... hardly any)
    Another method is to very slightly overfill it (close the plug before the fluid starts dripping all out)... run the procedure again... and let the extra fluid come out the 2nd time you pull out the filler plug.
    (I am from Europe so my car isnt available in the US but its a VW Group car)

    Some awesome information Shop DAP could share with you but do not, is that some 2017+ GTI's for some god forsaking reason don't come with a fill plug. So before you drain the gear oil from the bottom, make sure you have a fill plug on the side. I almost shit my pants when I discovered this the hard way. There is however a solution and that involves removing the air filter box and battery tray to expose a black 21mm plastic selector bolt that's above the reverse sensor switch on the top of the transmission. Very carefully remove that bolt and add exactly the same amount of oil you removed back in through that hole where you removed the plastic bolt. You will need a clear hose 3/4 in diameter about 18-20 inches long and a funnel. Shove the hose in the hole and slowly start filling. You will need some patience for this part, it's a slow process but it beats the alternative flatbed tow truck trip to the stealership. That WILL cost you over $1000.00

      IMO the manual trans is the better trans for the GTI. I drove both when i was considering and ended up buying a manual transmission because the DSG just had no feel. Yeah its quick and easier to drive but not by much. A manual trans is just more fun and this transmission in particular is really easy to live with and drive every day.

    School boy error draining oil and not checking if filler plug will come undone.
    Also when you remove filler plug in the same time as drain plug ,the oil will drain quicker

  • @PaulNaylor3

    You mentioned that Motul Gear 300 was not good for a daily driver. I have never heard that before. It only gets positive reviews. I have been running it in my WRX which is my daily driver for the past 5000 miles and I have not noticed it to be a problem. It is the preferred gear oil in the Subaru community. I would think it would also be safe to run in the GTI as a daily driver.

      Thank you for the reply. I guess I don't completely know what you mean by cold temperature operations. For example, are you saying it is not appropriate for cold climates or that it is not effective at start up until everything gets up to temp? I just hadn't heard of anyone avoiding Motul Gear 300 in cold climates or having any negatives about start-up for daily use. Your videos are very informative and you always handle yourself in a professional manner. Thank you for teaching us.

      More or less. This GEAR OIL is twice as thick as VW oem fluid. 75w-90 is dead wrong for manual trans. get some Synchromesh, and you will love it. Also it's "notchy" because GEAR OIL has friction modifiers that don't let the synchros grab and engage property. This guy is a clown for selling such an inappropriate fluid.

    This video is basically a template for how to F up your manual trans fluid fill.
    VW oem MTF is super thin, as thin as ATF. DON'T use 75w-90 that's TWICE as thick. Dipshit tuner shops have no clue about what they sell their customers, they use it because of the name brand.
    You want a midweight GL-4 like (Pennzoil) Synchromesh or Redline MTL around 10cSt visc. Also, don't use GL-5 GEAR OIL or a combo GL-4/5, it's too slick for synchros to engage properly.
    Usually I use PZ Synchromesh, but Valvoline MTF is dirt cheap on Amazon. I'm about to do the refill on my wife's tuned Sportswagen. Remember, the best fluid is SLIGHTLY thicker than oem VW to take the extra HP of an engine mod and quiet the trans down. Double the visc at 75w-90 means hard shifting in the cold, and GL-5 gear oil means crunching synchros. I seriously can't believe these tuner shop clowns haven't figured this out yet. Just look up the VW fill, it's the same 6cSt as ATF (or even thinner). Synchromesh has a long development history and excellent track record.

      I recently replaced my gearbox oil with the OEM option (VW part number G 052 527 A2) which is, like you say, very thin. I did this to try to improve the notchy change from 1st to 2nd when cold. It has improved a little but still isn't quite right. Once the car has warmed up it improves a lot. I'm in the UK and honestly it's never really super cold or super hot here. Would you recommend I try one of the oils you mentioned? Pennzoil Synchromesh, Valvoline Synchromesh, Red Line MTL?
