This review makes me even happier that I bought the Lightwish travel palette/ pochade box that you reviewed not too long ago. I purchased a cup clip to add to mine. I still want to get a big thick rubber-band to put around mine to hold the clip it came with and the cup clip I bought. I still haven't used it. Unfortunately my Plein Air meetup group fell apart so I need to do what you did and just get in my own yard and paint!
It looks nice and compact. Pretty wood, too. I learned something new about hinges and an allen wrench, too. Thanks for the nice review of pros and cons.
Lightly off topic, I just watched The Mind of Watercolor's new video: Comparing Inktense Pencils with Standard Watercolor Pencils. He doesn't integrate water soluble pencils in his watercolor work. Generally, neither do you. He does use them for drawing and showed a technique I haven't seen other videos demonstrate. He used the pencils for line drawings and a damp brush to create a wash from the line. Typically, artists hate seeing any pencil markings from water soluble pencils. For illustrations, I like this. Steve enjoyed what Inktense did enough that he'll be exploring them more in the future. I wonder if it's worth doing a video contrasting the pluses and minuses for the different water soluble media from pencils to crayons to oil pastels to gel crayons and whether there is any reason to have them instead of just using watercolor paints.
I believe Lindsay had a couple of Old Reviews of Watercolor Pencils n Water Soluble Oil Pastels (Caran D'ache Neo Color II, Inktense, Arteza, Crayola Portfolio (?) n etc others), maybe 3-6yrs ago Old Videos. But doesn't hurt making a new one, Lindsay 😉 And she does a lot of mix media painting, esp Card Making; They're all worth checking. Good stuff. Happy Painting 🖌️ 🎨 or Drawing 🖍️🖊️✏️
Your constructive review is refreshing and honest. As a viewer, I am reassured that you will tell it like it is and not be dazzled by a box of free product. For me, it is a bummer that the half pans are not removable. I would rather have a flat space with magnets, so I can place my own metal boxes. Having 2 water cups would make a difference. Having a metal one disruots the compactness of the palette. I would replace it by silicone cup that folds flat. Anyway...when I catch myself thinking "I would change this or that" too many times, I can sense the product is not for me 😂. However, I appreciate you taking the time to review it and share your clear opinions.
I like the idea of it, but I think having it a little bigger and with space for two water cups would have been better, and the mixing place and water cup holder not being on those fold out flaps - they feel like they would get in the way of painting.
Seems like for the price, it's really nice. I can't imagine how they are making money on this with such a low price. The last thing I need, though, is another portable easel. :)
I think they cut them with a CnC router machine, and there isn't much wood. The brass cup and brushes would cost a bit, but I'm sure it's made in a low cost of labor country.
Heads up! HOBBY LOBBY has a wooden mini 15 color, clip on your sketch book Masters Touch watercolor pallete for 9.99. Very similar to many seen on line for much more.
Thank you Lindsay! I appreciate all of your reviews. I am shopping for something like this but haven’t found exactly what I want - these reviews are so helpful.
Thanks for the review! I’ve seen this one advertised (and a couple of others that are similar and more expensive). I’ve, so far, talked myself out of ordering one - I don’t need another travel palette 😂😂😂🤣🤣
Awesome, thanks for sharing this pretty wood pallette. I went on Amazon & snapped one up before they were gone. It is going under the Christmas tree. I can't wait to use it. Again thanks for showing this!
Hullo Lindsay, I just thought to myself I wonder if James Gurney is getting any credit for the design of these lil’ pallets or PleinAir boxes? I don’t suppose he bothered with a patent as he is not looking to make a ton of money from the idea, but he is selling the plans if anyone wants to create their own version of his traveling pallet. I made one from simple observation and the hinges were the most costly item! I used a couple pieces of scrap wood that I had settling around, I suppose that you could buy some wood for $10.00 or less the tension hinges cost me $12.95 at Ace Hardware and I used magnets leftover from a previous project. I believe they cost $10.00 and I finished that one did the pallet and I still have a few leftover! I use a selection from my metal pallets held in place by the magnets, the same is true for a double water up! I think it is possible that there are some people who are not handy or simply don’t want to create their own pallet. I have trouble spending $45 or $75 way to much for a traveling pallet. You get a thumbs up for reviewing and showing us this version of the James Gurney Plein-Air traveling pallet! Yeah I suppose you can not even say that, you might be sued! Lovely video Lindsay, thanks again for the amazing review and evaluation. Please take care and have a wonderful day!
There are thousands of folding traveling palettes, and as you know, you can't copyright an idea. People have been travel painting with travel palettes made of cigar boxes for centuries. When you patent something, it has to be very specific, and this would not be close enough to the easel he made. James' is more like 2 flat boards with magnets hinged together on which he attaches a tin box for mixing. The concept is similar, but they are not the same, this has pans and fold out wings. Plus, if you know James, then you know he would never gatekeep an idea. He even has a Facebook group where everyone shares ideas and builds freely. I think the more choice, the better (and I think James would agree!)
Great video, Lindsay! Does anyone make a split cup - so just one cup with two compartments? Hmmm maybe there’s a condiment cup or something like that would work but then maybe that wouldn’t be enough water 🤔 I’m on a no buy (except to replace fully used product) so I’ll just be watching others test and use new things:)
Actually, just a thought, you could loosen the hinges back to what the were so the box closes ... and turn the tripod so the paint pans are away from you. Using the palette with the lid opened all the way and toward you instead.
Thank you for a good review. Every time your cat joined in I thought it was mine wanting to come in (I was half way out my seat the first time - then you said it's your cat)! The palettes look really interesting - but I'm not sure it's a comfortable position to paint in.
I think Fuumuui needs to hire Lindsay before designing a plein air palette! She totally knows the needs of Artists who enjoy painting the postcard size paintings and what works!
Hi Lindsay. I'm looking for a new metallic gold ink pad. I have Encore! and have had it forever. I can't seem to find it, so am assuming they don't make it anymore. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.
I haven't tried many metallic gold inkslately, but I would love to see some suggestions in the comments! Altenew makes good ink pads, I'd check there but I haven't bought one recently.
Looks like a nice palette overall. But if I paid $45 for it and found a crack in the wood, even a small one, I would not be pleased and would likely ask for a refund. I'm surprised that they didn't check the product BEFORE they sent it to you for a review.
It wouldn't have taken much to make it ambidextrous, and they didn't do it. So meh. BTW, the one art supply I've found that is ambidextrous is the Winsor Newton Pro Watercolor markers. When you hold a marker in your left hand with the brush side in use, the writing is in readable position. I want some more of those. I know we lefties are a relatively small group, but more prevalent in the art world. We are a niche left unfilled.
@@thefrugalcrafter Creating inserts, one for water holder, one for the mixing palette that could be swapped from one side to the other would be an ingenious strategy. But no.
Awesome! This is a great Gurney Type Pochade Box. I ordered from Lightwish sometime ago; I believed you reviewed that already few weeks ago. I've been using the one from Lightwish and been so happy with it, I use it when I hike and do a pleinair. I replaced the Cup with Foldable Cup and fits perfectly on that cup hole. I just add a small jar in the middle, so I have two reservoir for brush cleaners. Now this is another interesting one. 🤩 Looks smaller. Ha, as if I need another one! Oh you're a bad influence Lindsay 😅😂, now I have to get this one 🤭😂🤣. Looks smaller and fits just right in my purse. Thanks for this review. Definitely keeper n Christmas gift for any Artist or.... for me 😂😅😂. Happy Painting 🖌️🎨
Wow! I can't believe a company would send a product for review without making 100% sure the item was in perfect condition! And to someone like you with so many followers, no less! Many people will avoid buying it after seeing that yours has a split in the wood! Oh... Issues with the magnets too! Pass!
It is unfortunate that the sketchbox arrived with a split! But they just sent to like they would to any customer, so I think that's better because if I got a perfect one, but they sent others poorly made ones, that wouldn't be cool. I'd rather have an accurate experience than a perfect one in a review.

I guess I don't use them with watercolor too often unless I am just sketching out the drawing with the pencils. Good idea!

Put magmet tape on the corners. Four small magnets should hold your paper with less bulk to carry than the clips.

I reckon they didn't design it, rather had their logo printed on the box from a white lable supplier.
19:23 thanks to my headphones I felt your cat next to me 😅

I was thinking you could maybe tighten the hinges. 😊 Could it hold a small sketchbook?
I think it can handle that
