I come back to this periodically...this album is arguably my favorite from him. It's SO cinematic in nature and the concept of him battling the pressures of fame and fortune was just so raw as he searched for authenticity. Tale old as time. Got me through some tough times. Happy to see he's grown so much too!!
Totally. Agreed. He's got such vision for his art it's amazing, especially being that he came from such a difficult past.. I mean, we all have our own struggles, but honestly he survived some intense ass shit, and then to come out of it with this beautiful art and his mastery of his craft is extremely inspiring. Got mad respect for that dude. Big fan.
really man... its great but he's not the first to do something like this.. Schoolboy Q's "blank face lp movies Part 1-3" or Kendrick Lamar's "God is Gangsta" or Kanye West's "Runaway" come on man i can tell you dont really listen to too much hip hop.. do your research
Nobody talks about this Vince album like that. To this day it’s prolly still my favorite project by him. & rewatching this makes me think back like this time may have been a bit difficult/dark for him.. & that this may even be his darkest project.. from the lyrics, video symbolism, and even the physicals covers of this album bein nooses.. Even looking at some of his interviews around this time it seemed like bro was either done with this shit or fed up. Idk could be completely wrong or overthinking but as a Vince fan, this project didn’t get as much love as it should’ve. & I’m glad bro seems to be in a way better headspace since..
This is amazing. He's talking about how he's constantly struggling and how much much pain he goes through, so much that he doesn't even want to live. And he expresses it through his music and the crowd loves it. His struggles are entertainment for the party, for the people who listen. No one reaches out to help him because they can't fully understand. I'm buying this album
Vince is depressed because of the gang banging he dislikes it he knows how it affects people in multiple ways the only thing that keeps them alive is the love they have for the little they have and I think Vince's mom is the one of the few things he's living for
Outkast - ATLiens, for those of you who aren't aware of what the song was with Andre 3000 rapping. If you weren't aware I suggest you listen to the album front to back because it is one of the top 20 hip hop albums of all time.
Yet you feel the need to come at their neck. Did they make you feel inferior? I think he was just letting people know, cause that's a great album I think many people should listen to. nothing about his comment seemed malicious but yours on the other hand... lol. People are so soft these days.
No, Vince is not gonna kill himself. This film is about the pressures of fame and how some people just can't deal with it (hence the crowd of people, hallucinations and the dead people seen in the hotel). Sometimes fame can sometimes drive a man crazy, leading to death. In this instance, resulting in the death of Vince. However, this film and EP isn't a cry for help, instead it is telling us that fame can be great, but it isn't great for everybody and it can destroy you mentally and end you permanently. The death of Vince may be symbolic that he has killed his egotistical side (hence Big Time being the song played in the beginning) and he has kept his real side alive and from now on he will keep it real. Well shit, I overexplained that one, didn't I. I just think this video is fucking brilliant and it summarizes the message of the EP really well. Well done Mr. Staples. We're proud of you.
Luke Berrie - I couldn’t agree more that this video is brilliant and represents the themes of the EP very well. I was just so confused as to what it meant as a whole.
"Every night up on my knees I pray, that everything will change and be ok, maybe I'll stay maybe I'll pass away, Im holding on to what the pastor say." That's one of the most accurate inner monologues. Like most of those suffering ..you develop this habit of dialogue in your head just to get you through the minute or hour. I respect Vince so much for creating a different conversation regarding mental health. Not sure if anyone can relate to this but that's what I love about his music.
"Don't say you feel my pain cause I don't even feel myself, blood rushing through my brain, sometimes I wanna kill myself..sometimes I feel like giving up.. sometimes I feel like giving up..sometimes I feel like giving up..sometimes I feel like giving up.." I smiled knowing I wasn't the only one.
the video is about how fame and music and other business is ruining him to the point of suicidal thoughts with him dead represents dying by his own hand or doing
+Brandonwun if you have ever seen The Shining, you will see that the bar scene from the video, the carpet on the hotel, and almost everything from the hotel parts are some references to The Shining. So, keeping that in mind it will help you analyze the video, that is if you've seen The Shining
The last and the most real resort of a man to not give up: the art, This is pure gold, it might be scary or sad but is undeniable that comes from the deepest of the heart of this boy, I deeply hope that phrase: "Art saves" make it worth it, Indeed.
Yeah i noticed that, it's trying to show that this hotel is also possessed and therefore his fanbase is possessed (hotel a metaphor for his fans/critics). My interpretation
We watched this on acid with my friends. This is like one hell of a horror trip journey. You can absolutely feel the fear and lust on this video and all of the bs in a scene of a famous personality, But in the end when he shot him self. You can feel all the serenity and freedom from all of his dark journey .thank you for this masterpiece.
kendimen c your ignorant to the truth this video is about exposing the powers that be and the system they use to destroy people and turn them into icons
this was probably the best music video i've seen in months. i like the occult vibes and social message. if you don't use your mind you lose it. and a lot of people are facing this obstacle through drugs, fame, sloth. i like that instantly you can gather multiple interpretations and the video/audio were well synced.
As a metal head, death metal at that, in the genre of rock music, I can say quite logically that Vince is the "death metal" of the rap genre. I hope you all get that reference.
I think so, It played a big part in the video. Senorita was about the ghetto being watched for entertainment despite them losing lives. This mirror represents the people who are always watching him as entertainment to see what he's doing at all times since he's more famous and we'll known now. He basically thinks that if he kills himself it will be nothing more than entertainment for those people because they don't understand he's a real person with real problems.
I think he's telling a story. In Senorita, people were walking through the projects and dying as they walked, but Vince, the only one speaking up and showing his talent had a police body guard. The white people were enjoying their suffering but Vince stayed protected the whole time
I love the path Vince took, the same goes to Earl, he's been killing it recently, these two were a little different from the other ones and took a big step outside of the Odd Future way. I still love OF, and Tyler and I listen alot to all the tapes, but this is some outstanding work. Bravo.
the beginning really sums it all up. But the beginning went so hard is that a actual song? I also noticed the lights in the elivator were going up, which means the vator was going down
Might as well put times for when a certain song plays in this music video. 0:00 - Big Time 0:30 - interlude 1:18 - Smile 1:42 - interlude 2:04 - Smile 3:25 - interlude 3:29 - Prima Donna 3:50 - interlude 4:09 - Prima Donna (Elevator Mix, by Chad Hugo) 4:13 - interlude 5:06 - Prima Donna 5:38 - interlude 5:40 - Pimp Hand 5:59 - interlude 6:19 - War Ready 6:41 - cheering section 6:45 - War Ready 7:34 - interlude 7:42 - Loco 8:01 - Let It Shine 8:16 - interlude 8:41 - Smile (outro) 8:56 - Pimp Hand Or just use the captions. I just noticed that subtle elevator pattern, its the same floor carpet from John Carpenter's The Shining. Lot's and lots of great things about this video and music
The scene in the hotel hallway were Vince is walking and sees each deceased star in their room (Kurt Cobain, PAC, Hendrix and Amy Winehouse) was eery AS FUCK but spectacular lol... Added even more depth to the possible "meaning/message" of this video. Great visuals.
some sell their soul to have a crowd , some put soul in their art and hate the crowd for not having one. Good and evil is something hard to understand .. One of my freind commited collective suicide to kill his dad... He saved his mother, so he knew the world would be a better place. His father wanted a better world by doing so ... Its all about soul ... If youre at a no return point , and you have no choice other than selling your soul , you better show your soul one last time before leaving ... ( my freind showed me the demon in his dad right before telling me that today , theyll go for the ... first time I saw his dad talk to himself , holding his head cause we were speaking in tongues ... he learn me to do so since like 7-8 months ... )
LAMBOS you didnt sell your soul otherwise you would have drop your family , its not a fucking prayer to satan you gotta do , its selling your soul literaly ... Live the rap life and the rap life will come to you...
Why every rapper that's on the come up just " have to do a track with K Dot or J cole" like no they honestly fucking don't. Just cuz they some big names don't mean errbody gotta do a song with em. Let them do they thing and let Vince do his.
Vince, you really got me with this one. You presented the idea so well and artistically, great job! You brought us into your world for a moment and remind us of the human being that spits these dope as lyrics over instrumentals.
it's more about the fact most artists go thru things they display in they're music and people listen but don't necessarily take them serious or just figure they're fine because they're rich or that someone in the circle is tending to them but more times than not nobody's really offering help they just watch.
i have never seen this. it’s been growing on me over the years but this actually makes me appreciate the prima donna ep way more than i did initially. i feel like this’ll be looked back on as a criminally underrated ep. what’s everyone’s fav song from the record?
Checked out Norf Norf after the lady lost it. That was dope, so here I am. Never heard a song of his till now. Glad to see another young bro creating his own lane. Even if I found it through some bullshit.
this is a visual poetry that can be interpreted in many ways just like a poem but hides a true message that I haven't completely gotten yet but I got some fragments of the overall message
As a entertainer your in the spotlight 24/7 so that's why everyone was after him the clerk said " your set time is 12:30" even tho he's on vacation people still want him to work. In the elevator the girl goes after him without a convo like they were together before, you can hear is it real over and over he's asking him self is it real than she's gone and when he's in the room war ready plays when fans start knocking on his room probably means he was going shoot one of them idk but loco plays right after which is connected to the hotel than he kills himself and the video started with big time and ended with let it shine. BUT HEY THATS JUST A THEORY A MUISIC THEORY
Well nigga have you heard of a muthafuckin period? Some punctuation? A comma? Shit. I think I agree with you but bruh please that illiteracy was hurting my eye balls trying to read that.
It's the story of him being fed up with life, the rap industry and a man fighting his own demons, his conscience and past with gang banging and it ends with him killing himself.
If anyone is seriously confused about the meaning of this vid, I suggest watching his interview with the Breakfast Club. I feel like you can gather an appropriate amount of information regarding his current mindset from it.
Think about the things Dave Chappelle said about the entertainment industry in interviews after he got back from Africa. I see a lot of parallels here between the message of the song/video and what Dave said then: "“The worst thing to call somebody is crazy," he said. "It's dismissive. I don't understand this person so they're crazy. That's bull----. These people are not crazy. They are strong people. Maybe the environment is a little sick.”
Best young rappers by region West Coast - Vince Staples East Coast - Joey Bada$$ Midwest - Mick Jenkins The South - Isaiah Rashad What do you guys think?
This shit is like a movie in itself! Vince is trying to say something here, prima donna top ten this year
I love that it's always got a deeper message.. even if it's hard truths we don't like to face
Yeah exactly we need younger people like Vince to make this stuff known
+4ever Yung Flaquito truth!
Yeah I fucked with what kid cudi did with maniac

Totally. Agreed. He's got such vision for his art it's amazing, especially being that he came from such a difficult past.. the most creative thing I've seen from a rapper
Theres more creative videos from other rappers out there. I can't name many examples of the top of my head but yeah.
Lot of creative rappers, you just need to know where to look.

I never thought Vince was gonna be this creative when I first heard of him a couple years ago. He's definitely surprising me with his work.

This is amazing. He's talking about how he's constantly struggling and how much much pain he goes through, so much that he doesn't even want to live. Vince is probably one of the most unique rappers in the game right now, flow and substance is out of this world.
Awesome The Shining reference!
glad I wasn't the only one who noticed it too hahaha
what's the reference?
+Brandonwun if you have ever seen The Shining, you will see that the bar scene from the video, the carpet on the hotel, and almost everything from the hotel parts are some references to The Shining. So, keeping that in mind it will help you analyze the video, that is if you've seen The Shining

no one seems to mention how badass his video production is
I DOn't care what anyone say, THIS IS STILL THE BEST vince Staples project ever!
This reminds me of Fear and Loathing in Vegas
the hotel part right
yeah the hotel part
Reminds me a lot more of Hotel California meets Room 1408
Do you mean the girls from The Shining?
The wallpaper in the elevator was identical to the carpet in the shining
the wall paper is the same design as the carpet from Stanley Kubricks "The Shining". so. fucking. dope
in the elevator that is
Yeah i noticed that, it's trying to show that this hotel is also possessed and therefore his fanbase is possessed (hotel a metaphor for his fans/critics). My interpretation
I noticed that too! Also, the bell boy is called Johnny!

LAMBOS you didnt sell your soul otherwise you would have drop your family , its not a fucking prayer to satan you gotta do , its selling your soul literaly ... Live the rap life and the rap life will come to you...
if this would be someone more famous you would say its a masterpiece .. I can tell now it IS a masterpiece
i wish Harambe is still Alive,so he can watch this
DUHURHURHURHUR U SO FUNNY
Seriously fuck off.
Cookkkkk!!!
Shut the fuck up
harambe memes are so done for lol
I would love see Vince and Kendrick or Cole do a track
God no.
nope Vince do his own thing
Vince doesn't do features anymore. And if anyone wants a feature he charges like $5,000
Why every rapper that's on the come up just " have to do a track with K Dot or J cole" like no they honestly fucking don't. Just cuz they some big names don't mean errbody gotta do a song with em. Let them do they thing and let Vince do his.
stop telling people what the fuck to do
I love he plays all parts of each song in the EP in the video, this is some real creative shit right here.
Vince, you really got me with this one. You presented the idea so well and artistically, great job! You brought us into your world for a moment and remind us of the human being that spits these dope as lyrics over instrumentals.
As soon as I saw Jimi Hendrix and Tu-Pac I knew you was dead, I love that you brought Andre in tho.
nearly all his songs make me feel better about being what i am
i feel as though he truly knows
Crazy piece of work. This shit is amazing.
From 5:48 it was Kurt cobain, jimi, 2pac, someone else & Amy wine house.... What did that even mean
they all died when they were 27
I think it's just him showing different ways the fame changes you
Tupac died at 25
wrkz
my mistake. the point though is how fucked up you get when you get famous young, I think
it's more about the fact most artists go thru things they display in they're music and people listen but don't necessarily take them serious or just figure they're fine because they're rich or that someone in the circle is tending to them but more times than not nobody's really offering help they just watch.
i have never seen this. it’s been growing on me over the years but this actually makes me appreciate the prima donna ep way more than i did initially. i feel like this’ll be looked back on as a criminally underrated ep. what’s everyone’s fav song from the record?
Checked out Norf Norf after the lady lost it. That was dope, so here I am. Never heard a song of his till now. Glad to see another young bro creating his own lane. Even if I found it through some bullshit.
0:48 Vince picks up a water bottle and you can see Pill Cosby smiling in the corner. I understand the whole video now.
where lmao
Yea I dont see him at all
stfu lmao
😂😂
Lmfffaaaoo!!!! This Nigga!!!!!!
this is a visual poetry that can be interpreted in many ways just like a poem but hides a true message that I haven't completely gotten yet but I got some fragments of the overall message
This song is dope man I love it y'all should look at that Indigo Misfit Spiritual Healing thats a chill one tho
Heard that song the other day I liked it
Couldn't at least make the spam make sense for the video?
the EP came out a while ago lol
And he didn't kill him self he killed the man in the mirror which is him self but not the original him if that makes sense
+Sincere One lmaooo
mattpat Finna sue your ass
Good interpretation.
Well nigga have you heard of a muthafuckin period? Some punctuation? A comma? Shit. I think I agree with you but bruh please that illiteracy was hurting my eye balls trying to read that.
dope, one of the best tracks out right now
Still cannot believe how amazing this is
Vince staples need to blow up soon
To this day one of my favorite albums! Vince really let you know what was up with this one.
Foreal, you feel ever song!!
If you play Prima Donna backwards you get this story of Vince killing himself at the end.
It's the story of him being fed up with life, the rap industry and a man fighting his own demons, his conscience and past with gang banging and it ends with him killing himself.
Nice look
Better than Wolf and GKMC combined
Is he like in bastard mode like Tyler rn? I'm confused
Solid StaleFry I think he on some U(Kendrick Lamar song) shit.
If anyone is seriously confused about the meaning of this vid, I suggest watching his interview with the Breakfast Club. I feel like you can gather an appropriate amount of information regarding his current mindset from it.
Why was pac in there??
that's what i was gonna say i think the mirror thing is a metaphor for murder like he was talking about in that interview.
Officially my favorite video on the internet . Vince is the goat
Oh shit is that Andre3000 i heard?
jorgenhb Yeah I heard it was a sample though
It's from ATLiens, I have the album on CD, by OutKast.
ya the song war ready on his ep
Gouranga that was an awesome sample
Nah that was areosmith
Kendrick, Vince, Pusha T, Run the Jewels, Kanye, Chance, Gambino, they make movies, not music videos
they have such an amazing msg though
Nigel Cooper and j cole
ricky Steve Cole has never made anything like this
Nigel Cooper bruh u just put my list in order besides childish
Jeremy Thompson Gambino is a fucking artist man, I might have to put him 1st if I was ranking them
Wow, loved this album and had no idea this video existed, straight master piece! great coherency with the album!
Think about the things Dave Chappelle said about the entertainment industry in interviews after he got back from Africa. I see a lot of parallels here between the message of the song/video and what Dave said then:
"“The worst thing to call somebody is crazy," he said. "It's dismissive. I don't understand this person so they're crazy. That's bull----. These people are not crazy. They are strong people. Maybe the environment is a little sick.”
America Horror Story Hotel bonus episode
i think vince one of my new favorite artists
Best young rappers by region
West Coast - Vince Staples
East Coast - Joey Bada$$
Midwest - Mick Jenkins
The South - Isaiah Rashad
What do you guys think?
Yeah, if you get all your tastes from youtube suggestions.
Care to name some rappers that are better then, underground genius?
+Ahmed Idris Kendrick, who is your profile picture...
South for me is a tie between Denzel Curry and Isaiah Rashad.
+newcomingfilms Kendrick isn't as young as the guys he mentioned, I don't think he counts.
i think its about if your a artist and you die people start to love you more than when you did when you were alive
