It's okay. The city skyline doesn't have the diversity of the other big cities in Texas. It's king of boring unless you see everything outside of downtown. Then it looks okay. The freeways are lacking but I'm used to the spider webs of roads in DFW. The city as a whole is just okay. Lacks the activity of San Antonio, the creativity of Austin, the architecture of Dallas, and the charm of Fort Worth. It's just a big city that can feel sterile sometimes. There's a port, so there's that. The flat scenery is another issue that doesn't help either.
That because we have more square mileage than both those city's combined so we necessarily don't need to build up and the other half of our city isn't a lake or river

They can't build subways because the ground here is too soft. They could do rail though but it's been rejected by some voters and politicians unfortunately.
The type of soil we have down here on the Gulf Coast would make underground building very difficult and expensive. We have what is called "gumbo" dirt. The high clay content causes the soil to drastically expand and contract with moisture. That's why homes along the Gulf Coast generally dont have basements. There has been talk of mass transit rail, but it never goes anywhere. US politicians don't believe in advanced infrastructure. They are more interested in fattening their own wallets.

Never been to NYC but from what I’ve seen on driving videos. Looks like the buildings are so close to you that you can’t see around them. When there’s actually huge skyscrapers on the other side of those buildings. & in a lot of other cities, those skyscrapers are visible
I've been to New York City before on vacation And it's nice out there. But some how even though I've lived almost my whole life in Houston, the Houston skyline still feels like it's taller than any other skyline I've seen before.
That’s because u want it to be and you support Houston. Reality Nyc and Chicago buildings are almost twice as tall as Houston’s tallest building. Some of NYC buildings are at 1,600 ft without antenna. Nyc has really an booming skyline now almost surpassing HonG Kong.

It's because of the closeness of numerous 700+ footers and not having many short buildings between. That, and you likely havnt been to NYC in the past 5 yrs or so. It is true that in some ways NYC looks massive but not that tall. When I went abt 10 yrs ago I was shocked that the empire state building didn't look nearly as tall as I thought it would, so shocked that I looked up it's actual heights which is more like a 1000 ft building with 200+ ft of crowns and spires. The new buildings that NYC has built are very tall. Now, Chicago's skyline from the park downtown is actually the tallest to me that I've seen in person, though NYC is certainly the biggest Though again, I havnt been to NYC in 10 yrs. I think NYC from central park would now be the most impressive in every way.
