7 years later, this video is still relevant. Just picked up a 2008 element with a broken hood release. Saw the vid and did the install after buying a tube cutter (upped the cost of repair but now I have a tube cutter). Instantly felt the +5hp! Many thanks!
I can confirm that you do not want to cut off all of that plastic. Mine broke in such a way that the plastic ‘stem’ came off letting the cable go up into the sheathing. Had a fun time fishing that out with a pair of needle nose.
Oh yes, this is very common! I recently had to swap this cable/hood release over from my parts car: an ‘05 Civic, to my ‘02. This would have definitely been worth it, to have! I could have saved myself a 1/2 hr, right there. On the positive side, the one on my ‘06 Ridgeline broke off a few months ago and now I know I can replace just that piece.. Thanks Eric O., for the vids on this Hondoo!
I just completed my repair. Your tubing cutter idea was excellent to get a nice clean cut at the back. I however, did not remove the latch assembly.. simply because I didn't want to make another trip in to the house to get any more tools. (LOL). Honestly, the hardest part was removing the left over plastic cable and tightening the allen screws. Thanks...
I do know the answer to this it is 550 ft pds. BUT DO NOT USE RED OR BLUE LOCTITE !!!!!!!! You have to use the ultraviolet purple loctite fron NASA. Or you well have catastrophic failure of the vehicle during reentry
You bet. Nowadays things are going to hell :). Paranoia everywhere, I do agree that cigs are not good, but still - taking it to the extreme is not good. Anyway - history teaches us a lesson. 100 years ago drinking was banned in US, but you could smoke. Nowadays, smoking is bad, but you can drink. Possibly in another 100 years, you will drink and smoke, but not be able to eat meat. Or carry guns. Or whoever knows what will be.
Excellent performance upgrade Eric, should go well with the new engine job. I found an excellent aftermarket replacement aluminum third door latch for my '03 S-10 when the plastic one broke. The crap OEM plastic one was $11 from Dorman and the aluminum aftermarket one was $12 - it was a much higher quality part that I think will outlast the truck, its been on there since 2005 with no issues.
Excellent demonstration and of course Amazon help in having these hard to get but simple merchandise that makes our common fox like us a breeze to accomplish car repairs and save some money. Then UA-cam have handy guys like you that makes showing the repair process a s simple as it can be. Outstanding and you have my humble gratitude.
I miss working these Japanese cars. Lately, for some reason, I'll I've been working on is VWs and Audi's. I honestly had to triple my "special tools" bin to accommodate around 4 Euro head and timing procedures. Miss yah, Subie!
Hey Eric, Nice job!!!!! a little OCD tech tip, would be to take off only enough plastic for the handle to fit perfectly, grind a flat spot for the set screw and some locktite. A+++
Yes, the plastic shaft is probably molded to the cable. More is better, especially if it has a strong return spring. Locktite is good but I disagree with the grinding because the set screw will do its' job just as well or better because of the surrounding pressure of the strands being pushed aside when tightening. Grinding would only weaken the cable. I'm about as OC as Eric. If this is a common problem with these, he will probably refine his technique a bit. My, Toyo broke the cable, no extra length, so no options. That was fun❗
WOW! I could feel the horsepower here ! ! LOLOLOLOLOL ! ! Your definitely going to have to upgrade the brakes now ! ! ! Seriously, that aluminum with the set screw, beats the hell out of those cheap plastic handles! As always, GREAT VIDEO! Have a great weekend!
Good one Eric , I put a handle from a old lawnmower pull cord used the set screw and crimped it with copper tube . I got. An extra 48 cc . I get my coffee faster at the drive through now. Looking forward to more vids on the Honda . I have 2002 1.7 sport. Thanks,,,
Only thing I'd do different is dremmel a flat on the cable end. Give the grub screw a better chance to bite and won't just slip off if it happens to work loose a bit over time. Another method would be to drill through the handle, also remove some of the plastic on the cable end and again dremmel a groove at the tip. Then you can lock the handle in with a 'C' clip.
My OCD is acting up a little because of that little bit of unsightly cable showing between the new handle and the plastic you cut off! LOL. Thanks for another entertaining vid.
Thank you for this Video. My 2005 Honda Civic Hood Latch broke. I ordered the Part on Amazon, liked the Tube Cutter trick & now I am going to fix it myself. You saved me so much money. :)
Thanks man! I didn't have a tube cutter--or a good pair of side cutters, but my little oscillating multi tool cleaned that plastic off the cable in a jiffy!
Hey, your video is great. I have a 2005 Honda CR-V EX with the broken hood latch release handle. I purchased a replacement part X001RUB2NR from Amazon along with a snip tool and tube cutter. Unfortunately, my hood latch is a past replacement part that has the release hood latch and the mounting plate designed as one piece. And it looked like the hood latch was just glued onto the tip and had broken off. Even if I was to attempt to clip off the remaining piece, I couldn't see a way to secure the cable. I now realize that only the top cap broke on the vehicle that you repaired in this video. On my vehicle, the front part of the hood release cap along with the stem and the internal cable wire broke off. So there wasn't any wire to work with. Thank you
Replaced the entire hood latch cable and all for about 8 bucks on my '02 Civic EX coupe. Got the parts from RockAuto and amazingly enough it was a Dorman and it fit.
The interior handle you pull to release hood is broken, it's been missing since I bought 2005 Civic. I use a pair of channel locks to pull the plastic bolt that latch was attached too. I don't need to replace cables or anything, just the thing you pull from inside the car that pops hood. That little plastic square piece is all I need.
Excellent fix the tube cutter was what I was thinking. I might have put some thread locker on the Allen screw. I seem to have trouble with those backing off.
Did you see the video ETCG did on his repair? It was plastic-repair doo-dad that ended up snapping off and pissing off the guys at the Honda Dealer when he took it in for some recall work. They gave him hell for it. I wonder if he should done this one for his Element. All in all, you're correct... cable replacement is easy. He did it on his channel, although you get the extra 5 HP for the billet aluminum on this Honda.
Very cool video with some humor and instruction ta'boot. I didn't read in the Amazon listing, for the hood handle I bought, that it'll provide extra horsepower, but I was glad to find this out in your video that it does. Three Alien Thumbs Up !!!
I watched and I am going to try it. One question: how do I know if the cable is broken? Should it seem loose? It has not slipped through but it has no tension when I pull on it. Thank you.
My Element h as the release recessed through a sidewall molding, so I used a needle nose vice grip to hold the cable pulled out while I worked on it., and a Dremel to expose just enough of the cable to seat in the new knob,
Damn I wish you guys were closer so you can service all my cars. I dont feel like driving 4 1/2 hours for a oil change haha. NY state is huge. Keep up the good work!
I've seen some upgrades. I've been around. I've seen some stuff, man... Just want to be absolutely clear so it's understood when I say, "I think that's worth putting it on the dyno".
Mine is down to 3 individual wire strands. It is not a solid piece of wire like yours. It's so thin that they break off when I try to grab it with pliers. I'm watching several videos to see if I can find one trying to replace one like mine
Nice and easy. Better send a link of this video to Eric the car guy. His broke and instead of doing what you did he replaced the whole cable. He could have saved so much time if he just would have waited for you to post this video. LMAO... Ya it fits great. Well I think it will. I haven't tried it on yet. I don't want to get it dirty till I do some work on the truck.
Haha yeah if this didn't work I would have tossed a cable in it but thought what they hay, let's give it a try :) Oh man don't be afraid to wear it! I have more.
Actually I was thinking of hanging it up in the closet and cover it with plastic so it won't get dusty over the long term. Where do you get your from. I would like to give some of mine away to some people but damn they are pricey.
Would really like to see a video on how to reduce excess slack/sagging from a release cable without replacing the cable or the release handle. Overtime, my Accord's cable developed enough sag which makes it stick to the radiator, so can't open at the worst, most critical time. Thanks in advance!
you could have made your own latch :: ) that woulda been pretty cool too...but i'm glad this wasn't a full hood cable replacement because that would definitely been a waste of your time...yo're a very wise man Dr. O
I believe those break due to the way people pull on it, they are meant to be pulled out directly horizontal rather than on an angle, cheap plastic doesnt help either
I use zip ties on the stretched cables on GM vehicles. It works really well. I used to use split washers and those work ok too. The zip ties look better and I use two small ones next to the ball that is on the end of the cable. Eventually you have to replace the cable but generally they break by that time. I don't know anyone that OCD that would be upset that the remaining cable pull was crooked.lol. Personally I love the vice grip style but owners don't. I guess they are never really happy then now that I think of it.lol.
South Main Auto Repair Hey Eric, just want to say hi, from Paradise, Newfoundland, Canada, Look forward for new videos and watch some of the older ones every now and again. what is going on with the brake clean, I haven't seen you use any in the last few videos, keep up the good work.
+KS They are cheap dreck(sh#$, in German or Yiddish) knockoffs of dealer parts. Sometimes you get lucky though, the 4.6L intakes seem to hold up, but some have surprise places where you mist add RTV . They are pricey on some things, I installed an EGR tube and it was actually cheaper to buy from Ford.
I assume their was installed loc-tite on the set screw, or you added such. I'd be interested in a Gas Cap cable failure replacement vid, LoL! A nightmare, usually. Always enjoy your vids, and often learn something.
Waiting patiently for the next performance upgrade... your honda forum byline needs the help! :) (actually just catching up on my Eric. O videos. Rock on.)

What is the required factory torque on that set screw? Red or blue Lottie required? Don't want to lose it when that VTEC kicks in.....Good times

I just found this video...my son's Honda Civic is much better now. Thank you!!
Ideal, quick and easy and finished job is stronger than standard plastic handle plus half the part cost ...
Whenever I get to work and I see a new video from Eric, i grab my coffee and cigs and I watch it before doing anything else.
Just as long as you are smoking the brand most recommended by doctors.
I think it's Chesterfields that Doctors recommended more than any other brand. I remember when you could smoke in hospitals. Country is goin to hell.
rtta51 I remember when you could smoke ANYWHERE! Heck, doctors would smoke in their offices while seeing their patients! Lol

i remember working in the shop and putting out butts in the cast iron of the brake lathe bin....... but what can you do no one machines rotors anymore
You need that aluminum hood latch handle when you are opening the hood every 10 minutes to tune the high performance engine!
FrugalPrepper or reattach your shoddy cold air intake that fell off over the last bump...
Too many more mods and he'll blow the welds on the manifold.
I'm already looking forward to the neon body kit, whale-tail spoiler and under-body lighting upgrades.
don't forget the fart can muffler and 8" tailpipe.
Scoop mirrors and custom walmart head lamps.

im using a ground rod clamp for my hood release handle. made threads on the left over plastic with a die. it works okay.

A tubing cutter came to my mind as well. Good repair. What DOESN'T Amazon sell?

Eric installing a high performance mod on a car thats rare
