The kidney stones i got last year werent super large and could(did) pass without too much issue, but it did cause initially a shock reaction, which is how i knew something was wrong and pain when they would attempt to move, which resulted in many days in hospital for constant hydration through IV and medication assistance there. I've had a few kidney stones. Thankfully the doctor and I were able to get them to pass without surgery. The first one I had was wicked, it had one side that was kind of golden and lumpy, but the other side was filled with jagged blade edges that could have been bad news had the stone been any larger. But the meds they give you loosen up your tubing and help things pass more easily. The meds also make your urine dark orange, which freaked me out the first time, I thought it was blood. But blood isn't orange like what I saw come out of me. The most painful part is when it passes through your kidney tubes and into your bladder. Once it's there, and with the right meds, it can pass relatively pain free.
