What about head wear tho? Compared to reel to reel head wear are the heads on a cassette deck more resilient?

The heads on an R2R deck do generally wear out faster than the heads on a cassette deck (this is assuming the material composition is the same for both heads). This is because reel to reel decks typically play at much faster speeds than your standard cassette deck.
