No worries! I say "um" and "anyhow" a lot in mine. I've tried to stop, but I don't edit my videos at all right now, so, I may overuse other words as well, but that's what I noticed about mine.
Thank you for sharing how you gradually increased your preservation knowledge. Made me relax a bit! It's all so intimidating. I've got the foodsaver and a dehydrator....working on waterbath Canning for next year... I am gradually getting some confidence and your videos are helping so much. 🙏 appreciate you!
Life is never ending learning journey and I learned a few new things here today. You look amazing as always- I know it’s been hard these last few months. Still praying for your peace and comfort.
I'm considering a freeze dryer, but the price is stopping me. If the grid goes down it's useless. How much can I use it before that happens?? The question of the year I guess.
I (and I know at least one other) reached out to Harvest Right and advocated for them to send you one. I cannot even begin to describe how over the moon I am that they did!! I dont even care if it was based on our emails, I am just soooo grateful that they did so that you have that resource as well for your wonderful family!
Soo much great information 🙌🏻 I have to say I wasn't expecting that. I figured I already knew at least how I decide but wow I had no idea about the Vitamins that prefer the heat or cold. I would be really interested in learning more about that. A book recommendation would be helpful even.
+Alisha James I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I switched doctors and was reviewing my diet. She told me that I shouldn’t be eating kale and spinach raw. She said that they needed to be blanched at the very least because of the oxalates. All this time, I was adding it raw to salads. Ugh.
This was such a great break down of pros/cons of each method. Well done, Jessica! I am so excited you got the freeze drier and can't wait to see what you're going to do with it!
I love all the information you share with us. I have learned so much from your channel! Random ❓....how do you preserve without power. If that power grid were to fail, and eventually there was no gas to run generators or propane, how do you preserve then? I would love to hear what ideas you may have in certain situations! Love you all!!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I have always been fascinated by food preservation, I’m almost 60 and still love learning new ways of preserving food.
Personally, I like canning on a wood fire. I also have 3 hanging air dry dehydrators. Lactofermentation, smoke house, and salt curing. Such a wide variety of options with yummy results!
Although I bought my dehydrator for $30 I also just air dry on paper plates a lot too. I feel this is the cheapest but I really do love canning certain foods.
I've seen many of the homestead channels getting a freeze drier like you received. Some seem to be given/ loaned (?) one and that's great. For the common person on low or a fixed income it is out of the question. So that is a consideration. Joy Giles
True. Seems like every UA-camr I watch is being partnered with. That's awesome, but like you single older lady on fixed income... Well not in the near future. But I can still dream😁 also we deciding on which method you need to remember there maybe a time no power, again we all can't afford generators or solar power, so freezing alot would not be practical for long term.
So awesome that Harvest Right approached you about the freeze dryer. So exciting! I've been considering investing in this particular freeze dryer, and voila! You give the lowdown on it. Brilliant! Must be a win-win waiting to happen. Thank you.
This is a great video! Thank you for providing so much information! I too could talk about food preservation all day. I love it! My grandma canned every thing from her garden and meat she raised. I miss calling and asking her advice. She would love to see that people are learning this skill.
Living in a tropical climate before I used to air dry a lot of foods like the locals. I can only do that in the summers now.... we are facing an energy crisis in Spain and need to focus on reducing dependency on anything electric. Fantastic video!! Especially on nutrition was eye-opening.
I would love another episode about how well these items(through different means) are reconstituted. How do you use dehydrated items? Only soups? Or do you add extra liquid to recipes?
I am so happy for you and that harvest right sent you a freeze dryer. We got ours this year and I am enjoying it tremendously. I don’t think I will ever preserve tomatoes any other way. The versatility of freeze dried tomatoes are endless. The tomato powdered can be sprinkled into any dish. You can make tomato sauce, tomato paste, tomato soup. And I just freeze dried raw pumpkin yesterday just cut straight from the rind and my picky grandchildren was eating it right off the tray. You are going to enjoy this machine I just know you will. And I like my green beans out of the can I don’t like them any other way. I’m here if you need any help with the freeze dryer I’m not an expert but I do love using it. Fresh raw milk and eggs do wonderfully I freeze them both before I stick them in the freeze dryer because for me they seem to do better. And of course freeze dried skittles are a must😉God bless and enjoy your new toy.
We keep it in our pantry off of our dining room. Which is an extra bedroom there is a ceiling fan in there and then I have a little clip on fan that I clip on the chair where the pump is to help keep the pump cool while it’s running.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I do 3 of the 4 methods plus fermenting.. I don’t have the freeze dryer yet… but soon! I just drove through Ohio from PA taking my son to open house at University of Northwestern Ohio and I thought of you wondering if I drove by you somewhere.
I love your presentation. The detail, common sense and clear concise information is great. It's true, if no one wants to eat it, then it's a waste of time and effort. My family love corn frozen, green beans canned, strawberries freeze dried----it does make a difference. I'm saving up for a freeze dryer and a steam canner. Thank you for your time and effort in putting this video together.
This is a very helpful video, thank you. I will add that I really enjoy fermentation when it gets hot out and the produce rolls in. Peppers, cabbage, root veggies, herbs, and many others can be fermented to keep the kitchen cool and food waste down. And perhaps you don’t do this where you live, but root cellaring is probably the least work of all.
LOVED the thumbnail picture ! A home freeze drier, wow! Didn't know there was such a thing, $2400 is a lot of money, but I guess over time it would pay for itself? We love freeze dried strawberries. tfs 🥰🍂🍃🍁🦃🌬️🌛🧡💗✝️🥰🍂🍃🍁🦃🌬️🌛🧡💗✝️
Really comprehensive review!! Thanks and making lemonade powder sounds wonderful - we grow Roselle and make our version of Kool-aid which I could freeze dry into instant juice. My mind is spinning!
With freeze drying you can also powder some of the ie carrots and tomatoes. Great for soups. Pastas and sauces. Also try and freeze dry some of your lemons this year and save freezer space.
Excellent video with a lot of important information. I am sure this took time to research and prep for... THANK YOU! We have been on the fence about purchasing a freeze dryer. Your personal testimony has been helpful because I trust what you say and share. Blessings.
Dehydration depends on where one lives. Air drying is possible in many places. Where I live, the humidity prevents complete drying by air. so I need to use a dehydrator when my wood stove isn't running.
Hello, I'm playing catch up on videos. Love this topic on preservation. A separate video on each vegetable/fruit in the best way to preserve would be fantastic! Thank you for all you do!
I too am saving for a freeze dryer! One thing that is so hard about food preservation in the hottest month of the year, is that it can get unbearable. I typically use water bath canning which heats the house up so much. It’s sometimes hard to motivate myself, because it’s already a hot day and now I have canning to do. I have used the dehydrator which helps keep things cooler. How does the freeze dryer do when it comes to heating your house up? I only have a window air conditioner which barely cools my apartment. I suppose that water bath canning can make your air conditioner work harder too. (Which could cost more to cool your house.). Can you tell that extreme heat bothers me? LOL! I’ve never done pressure canning before.
Thank you for sharing this information, and please share your freeze drying experiments, I am so new to this and I would like to glean as much as I can. I love your videos they are so helpful.
LIVER POWDER. Super idea! Please report how it comes out, yes? What a super way to preserve meats, save room in the freezer, cut back on canning jar costs and space . . . AND save more nutritional values. Oh. My! 🥩😁🍗
I am so glad to see you back! I love, love, love this video. I need more, and more, and more! I want to know what are the best ways to preserve different foods based on nutritional value. I do not have a lot of time to do my own research and value the research you have done. Thank you so much for sharing today. I really, really, really hope you do more in the future! (How many time can I repeat a word in the same sentence?) haha I did not even hear you say consider a "considerable amount of times.". LOL
Hi Jessica! Hope you are all well. Could you maybe share a little about how you let your children help out in the kitchen? Do you have any recommendations for letting an almost three year old help out without it being stressful for mom.. lol!
From personal experience only fill the freeze dryer tray no more than 1/2 full of citrus juice and fully freeze before freeze drying. Otherwise the sugars in the lemons or oranges will blow-up and you end up with a sticky honeycomb texture product that doesn't dry or reconstitute. It also doesn't taste very good. Same goes with pie filling and other things with fat or butter that might not be incorporated 110%. The fat and butter ends up all over everything! Takes forever to cleanup from both types of messes but especially the fat based ones. I made the mistake of freeze drying grated apple pie filling. I thought I ruined my freezer dryer! Luckily not the case and when the citrus juice exploded the same way I knew what to do. Have fun with it! It is such a blessing in our family and I'm sure it will be for yours.
Exciting about your freeze dryer. I hope it lasts longer for you than a month like ours. It's been sooooo frustrating dealing with that company. I've been trying to have to fixed longer than I was able to even use it. Many frustrated customers with that company and they can't keep up. Such a bummer. I've lost a lot of time
I just got a pressure canner. I have water bath canned quite a lot this year and am eager to expand to low acid foods. My question is will you still have a pantry challenge this coming January and February with the potential for extensive shortages?
Check out rose red homestead they did a potatoe test . Between dehydrated or freeze dried which tastes the best or the worst. They cut the potatoes into different shapes scalloped, cubed, mashed, julienned and etc. She a good teacher. She try to help new beginners as well as people that been preserving awhile. Everyone can learn something new, and everyone don't know everything. She's a real nice lady. Hope you check her out. May God keep blessing your family. Love your videos
Thank you so much for this video. We're about to start our food preservation journey and was wondering how many jars you all go through. I'll be preserving for 9 people, mostly adult or teen males!
Thank you, this is great information. Jessica I get very confused as to what needs oxygen absorbers. Can you please help me in this area. Again, thank you!
Hi Jessica! I have been enjoying all your videos. I especially related to the video regarding home church as we had a very similar experience in my family. My son is highly allergic to peanuts and the people, especially the older folks, in the church didn't understand the importance of not having foods with peanuts in the church. It made for frightening times that's for sure! One question, I hope that it's okay to ask and not too vain, where did you purchase your pintuck denim jumper style dresses? (The dark and also light denim). I have been searching for this style for a long time! Your channel is such a blessing. Thank you! *Rosemarie*
Thank you for sharing this very helpful info. Where do you learn about which nutrients are increased/decreased by various preservation methods? Because of my own diet restrictions I would like to learn this for my own unique foods I preserve.
Oh, dear. If you wish to dehydrate lemon juice then I would recommend a video made by RoseRed Homestead. She explains the science of it. You definitely do not want to freeze dry the liquid. It will bubble out all over that place and make a gigantic mess.
@@loritanner4478 I'm not sure that would work. I think the issue is actually the level of sugar in the fruit. The commercial lemonade makers actually freeze dry slices of the whole fruit and then powder the inner parts of the fruit. There is some wonky magic that happens when the little membranes of the citrus fruits stay intact.
@@caffeinatedengineer7993 that is what stiver homestead did wrong when they were trying to freeze dry their cream to make creamer. People told them that had freeze dryers, that the company that makes the dryers said to put the tray with the liquid into your regular freezer. Then put them into the freeze dryer and you won't get it going over the sides. Like the stivers had happen. Just saying what they were saying a month or so ago on stivers video about their freeze dryer.
@@loritanner4478 I'm not sure the same rules apply when it comes to freeze drying citrus juice, though. I think the problem is the combination 1) a lot of sugar 2) no fat 3) no fiber. I dont think simply freezing the citrus juice will stop the sugars from expanding into bubbles. Or that the product will actually dry all the way. Sugar is hydrophilic. Which means it loves moisture. It absorbs moisture. Cream has quite a lot of fat in it. That may be the reason why pre-freezing worked for them.
Alternate Title - How many times can I say the word "consider" in one video? 🤣
I have rewatched the video three times because I really want to soak up all that information. I don’t remember hearing „consider“

I have a water bath canner, a pressure canner, a dehydrator, a food saver vacuum sealer and a deep freezer so this was super helpful!
