      So a search and rescue teams recommend to leave the safety of the car and main road and take a short cut through the woods.

    I know this area, and this section of US2, i have traveled it hundreds of times in my life, it’s a major highway, this time of year lots of travelers traverse this mountain pass. Cell service is spotty, but you do get service along the way sometimes just enough to get a text out and receive. leaving a major highway seems poorly thought out... Odds of getting help are greatly increased if you stick to the highway... something had to have cause her to leave the safety of her vehicle and go into the woods. maybe someone she came across, frightened her, who knows, but even a slightly competent person would know to stay near a paved highway... I consider myself pretty outdoor savvy, I would never leave the safety of the road for the woods and into unknown hazards. Nah, Something had to have chased her into the woods, that’s the only logical explanation... might also explain the reason she can’t remember why she went into the woods

      Children will leave the trail because they feel the need to hide. Gia's parents said she left the road to try to reach a bridge she thought was up the mountain above her. Obviously there is a significant cognitive issue here.

      She also packed bags before she left her house, wouldn’t tell her brother where she was going, and S&R didn’t start finding the “clues” like her phone and shoes until the story broke as news. Her mom also posted a missing notice online the day after she left saying she might be going to California. At some point she said she had been “going to some coffee shops in North Bend”, but mysteriously wound up dumping her car in a known cell phone dead area. Hmmmm.

    Good coverage of this case. Perhaps she misjudged and thought her car could reach the next gas station. Maybe she hitched a ride with the first vehicle passing and something bad happened on the way. From there she ends up in the woods and gets lost. I don’t believe she’d head into the woods for cell reception when standing on a roadway. Now back to read the links you left on Patreon. Thanks Nikia - very interesting case.

    Did the weather suggest hypothermia? Did any doctor diagnose hypothermia? Paradoxical undressing is practically mythical irl. Amnesia is both very rare and temporary. Blood work show anything? Mental history, current meds? Follow up with Gia.

    I am glad she was found but it is strange how she does not remember. No map or sense of direction is a bad combo. Me I carry a map and compass as backup. I use Gut Hooks on my phone to keep me straight.

    What are things that can be taught to children to help establish good internal mapping habits? I have an excellent internal compass and can map by memory without trying. It just comes naturally to me, but others in my family have no sense of direction or landmarks. Do you know good habits to start early with children?

    • @RatandCat
      @RatandCat  4 роки тому +4

      Great question. I need to do a video on this. Use maps on a regular basis with them. Have kids draw their own maps. Teach them how to be observant of major land features. At first this can just be features in a smaller area like a yard, but then build up too recognizing mountains. Teach them about how to find direction based on the sun and stars. Remind them of which direction they are going and frequently quiz them on their directions. Same for distance- both driving and walking. Have them guess how long it takes to get somewhere on a hike, comparing how much time it really took in the end. Review maps of new areas before your go. Then when you get there, quiz reaching on major features that are in the area and see if you can spot them. Download map & GPS apps to your phone that have downloadable maps that will work when there is no cell signal. Practice using them on a regular basis so they know how to use them on their own in an emergency.

      Compass+bezel , and reading maps. Topo. And learning urban grid systems, eg. Street numbering and home numbering. Odd house numbers one side, evens the other. Ave vs st. Does your town have avenues north south? Or streets? Which is main street and zero block? Learning urban grids helps wilderness nav and vice versa. His tip to draw your own maps is great - but first they should know urban and wilderness maps, so they know what they are trying to make.

    Hi, great video and another baffling dissapearence. With a happy ending though. Last year there was a French guy in early 30' that left his house his dog, his keys, went out and soaked in the earth. A very big effort was put to find him by the law enforcement and regular rescue workers with helicopters and canines. He was lost for more than 6 weeks when someone spotted a totally desorientated guy walking barefoot in the middle of a river and talking to himself. He called an ambulance because he understood that it might be the guy everyone was trying to find. When asked he didn't know that he was lost, that he was missing for more than 6 weeks and why he was in the place he was found. After that he was put in a hospital for observation for a few days and discharged to his father's house. Since then not even one update and the family refuses to communicate with anyone on that case. Strange hein?

    • @jacksamuk

      Gosh, that is one intriguing story! Perhaps he suffered some mental damage after getting lost and depleted of food and water? Post - Trauma ? Many possibilities come to mind!

    • @karolinamura
      @karolinamura 4 роки тому +1

      @@jacksamuk he wasn't starved when he was found. It was a very thin guy already and would never survived more than 6 weeks without any food while moving. He was found very far from his home. He certainly had something arrived to him because he was in a trance type state while living his house without any gear, food or clothing. I was really baffled when this case was diffused on internet, then regional TV and without results finally the National TV with the missing photo and description of his dissapearence. But no one was able to locate him even with best rescue teams, hi tech materials. They combed everything but not a scent was ever picked. Then his immediate disappearance from medias and the silence of friends and family was very frustrating . Not much chances of having any follow up here...

    • @karolinamura

      @@ronsmith1364 Yes it was in France . After checking again (it was some time ago and so many things happened since) he disappeared from Forest Landerneau July 24th and was found "swimming" in the river Élorn at the height of Guipavas 1st of September completely desorientated. The distance is 8km from the place of dissapearence. Apparently he left his place of living in Brest to go sleeping in his caravan in a terrain that he used with his dog in Forest landernau. Next morning he tied his dog to the caravan letting behind his phone his papers and without money. He was depressed and everyone were very concerned for his safety. Every searching protocols were applied without any results. Sorry for the error about his clothes while he was in the river.
      Here are 2 French reports about the case. Use Google translate or ask me if You want something more. Definitely a very strange case. I contacted his friends and family but they never replied.

    I have a horrible sense of direction. I am left handed, as a child, my mother was determined to force me to right hand; it didn’t work. Maybe this affected my natural sense of placement & direction maybe? My mother did the same with my older sister and she was successful at conversion. I will add that my sisters sense of direction is also very bad.
    Glad that today it is not considered so bad to be a lefty. I made up the lack of directional skill with artistic abilities. Just don’t ask me for directions.

  • @justintung7981
    @justintung7981 3 роки тому +2

    So she had no plans or other motivations to travel...drives to a gas station and buys coffee (looks lucid, too), and skips gas on her trip to god knows where while her tank is running on empty? Gets stranded, instead of staying on the freeway or returning to her car where help would undoubtedly come, she ventured off the only stretch of civilization in an area completely foreign to her, with 0 survival gear? And somehow, made it out, but can't remember a thing? Kids this age don't tend to do drugs alone, mind you. She drove to the middle of nowhere and just took off.

I couldn't imagine getting lost in the Pacific Northwest where people go missing all the time with bears mountain lions wolfs etc and hairy people. Saying that people go missing all the time in the uk and die of exposure or simply disappear completely steph young talked about that in her books.
