As a young woman going into medicine and wanting to pursue surgery, I am so thankful for this. Thank you, Dr. McKenna and Dr. Alamri!!!!!
It's our pleasure!
So encouraging! This is my dream job, but have people telling me it's a 'man's job'.
Im 15 and it's a lot way away but I can't wait for this job!
ps she's flawless!
Half of my class is composed of female surgeons. Whoever is telling you it's only for men is stupid. You're going to make an epic surgeon.
DeathAngleZoe - Your bedside manner will be shocking if you don't improve. She is 15 with a dream, don't spoil it. It has always been well known that women had it tougher trying to be a surgeon than most men. 7% to 10% of Neurosurgeons are women, low #'s dont you think? If you are training to be a surgeon with a name like yours makes it a bit worrisome.
@@trishlett40 You do realize that this is UA-cam right? No different from Snapchat and Instagram, a username does not determine somebodies profession in life or how they are. Someone can have a really unique name on here, and just be as normal as us all in real life. Also, why be the buzzkill? Let the person have dreams, if it turns out differently, it probably wont be bad or anything. That's like saying: PewDiePie has such a weird name! Why is he rich? Why does he have such a childish name?
Fam, at the moment my name is "M" on UA-cam, are you gonna roast that aswell?
I’m 15 and this is my dream too!
I want to do this job too I am only 13 but just the brain is so unknown compared to other body parts is awesome but the a ablity to save lives is what im excited for. I've had many people tell me I cant do it but I am ready to prove them wrong
Ms Mckenna
Saved my life.
Shes fantastic..
She actually looks younger and happier than other women. I used to thought, if I study too much, I’ll look older than my friend. I’m wrong 😂
Btw, love this kind of vid 🤩
Thank you, brainbook 🥰
She’s sooo sweetttt
But, gradually 7:00 , the voice makes her sounds like alien
Plz tell me about movement in ur head on left side?
What an amazing interview! Dr. McKenna seems like a wonderful superhero, only 13 minutes into this & I just immensely appreciate how she’s balanced her work life, coming back into work after having children, and being an inspiration to us all. Not only that, but the interviewer has been outstanding as well. Such a fantastic listener, and the conversation is such a pleasure to listen to! :)
Thank you Dalia. She is indeed a fantastic role model! Glad you enjoyed this!
This is lovely it’s nice seeing more women in neurosurgery
Thank you Ms Mckenna and Dr. Alamri for this extremely informative interview. Godspeed.
An absolute pleasure!
Dr.McKenna*
Leah Keeley Actually @RSCHD is right. It's Ms McKenna because in the UK, surgeons use the title Mr or Ms/Mrs and not Dr. Dr is reserved for non surgical physicians. This is from an aspiring student wishing to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.
A form of inverted snobbery.
Surgeons were called Mr not Dr or ms because they knew nothing in the old days except cutting hair and legs off. Hence barber surgeons.
Real drs looked at faeces.
Inverted snobbery.
Make yourself small to make yourself big.
Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to you both! I'm keen on the idea of surgery, but I do really want a family. I know full well with the right support I could be capable of having both, but for me it's about dealing with the emotional conflict of wanting the family lifestyle or the hardcore career lifestyle that might mean I'm more absent in familial life. Really appreciate listening to her experiences.
Love this! I’m a junior in high school and I am planning on working my butt off to become a neurosurgeon.
wao!! so much admiration. As a med student i find this really encouraging (greetings from Panama)
Yet another great live interview! Thank you very much both of you!! 😀
Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this video @brainbook and for answering my questions.
Thank you for joining us!
As an aspiring female neurosurgeon, subspecializing in neurovascular surgery , this video is really inspiring.
hello as an Img will I be able to get into neurosurgery residency after clearing MRCS(will get gmc registration) then will apply for Neurosurgery residency and after the Interview...if I get selected..will I get in to neurosurgery residency(ST1)?
I’m a doctor and I want to become a neurosurgeon since before I got into med school. I hope I do. ❤️
Even though times are changing it's still so difficult juggling motherhood and work. Especially an all consuming career like medicine, words can't express the respect i have for all parents balancing the two ❤
The neurosurgery department at my hospital has 6 male surgeons and 2 women!
hello as an Img will I be able to get into neurosurgery residency after clearing MRCS(will get gmc registration) then will apply for Neurosurgery residency and after the Interview...if I get selected..will I get in to neurosurgery residency(ST1)?
Very interesting ~ thank you for making this video!
Our pleasure Elena
I don't get why it's considered as a "man's job", if I needed brain surgery Id want anyone to operate me who's into the particular specialty, so it doesn't matter if you're a man or woman doing Neurosurgery
You can give me phone number? My neurosurgery problem
Thank you so much for this video it was a great interview 😄
Could you please do a video about what books connected with neurosurgery you are recommending for people interested in this field?
Sure do you mean medical textbooks or anything to do with neurosurgery?
@@Brainbook Anything, I am a pre-med intrested in neurosurgery and I think more people will find book recommedations very useful, books are essential if you want to know more about what path of medicine you would like to choose if you cannot shadow doctors due to multiple problems (country, lack of places etc.)
@@bartoszponiewierka6323 am agree wth you
Bartosz Poniewierka you should read when breath becomes air by Paul kalanathi as well as do no harm by Henry marsh as well as on the frontal lobe
could you please fix the audio?????? she is amazing, thanks
i wonder, would you suggest your children to peruse medicine if they would ask your advice? many thanks for such a wonderful content
I needed this video. Thank you very much!
It's a pleasure
I'm hypnotised by Miss McKenna.
I'll pass on the message!
Will be a great neurosurgeon INSHALLAH
In’sha’allah 🤍same In’sha’allah I will be one in the future.
Great Interview :)
Thanks
Very loud echo... kind of distracting to hear. Only in the middle tho. Thanks for this very important interview!
Wow! Impressive achievement
I’m a teenager, and I want to pursue my future career in the medical field, most intrigued by surgery. I’ve never been disgusted by the thought of a brain, but I get slightly queasy thinking of cutting through the skin with a scalpel. If there’s anything your willing to recommend about neurosurgery, I would love to hear about it.
She's so beautiful 😍
Beautiful and brilliant!
I have a question, how long are the holidays in neurologist
I WILL BE A GREAT NEUROSURGEON
Well ...... u need someone to take care of your family if u want to become neurosurgeon, one of the female neurosurgeon that I know is divorce bcz her husband's complaining about her, rarely at home and not caring for their kids plus u need strong mentality too everyday to endure the hospital life, good luck :)
So many people get divorce in every single job, everyone can become excecively absorbed in their job, regardless of what they do. Plus in the end it's something everyone has to learn how to manage, negardless of their gender
@@nayade4032well said 💯 totally agree
What is wrong when u feel movement in the left side of front of head
Maybe 🐛
do another video for women in orthopedic..im about to apply for my Masters in orth but being women is only thing holding me back because of people's creation when i tell them.sadly even fellow women
Would love to but we don't do orthopaedics. Glad you liked the video
audio gets weird after 8 minutes
So you're the fighter pilots of medicine as opposed to commercial pilot GP's? Might be a weak analogy but it's the only one I can think of. By the way if someone is tinkering with my brain, I really do not care if they're a man or woman.
what baffles me is that rather than focussing on gender issues and the specialty itself the crux is the same old boring yawnworthy essay that everyone likes to package women into "how to fit marriage amd kids"
tbh, i didnt watch this to hear that message again and again. it's not important, relevant or even a part of some women's lives and yet in every career and educational sphere women are constantly pushed to define themselves around the marriage and carriage count.
other than that, thanks for taking the time out ms mckenna and sorry you had the same questions any successful woman is asked of!
I won’t even bother answering these questions when I’m successful one day
What specific gender issues would you have liked they focused more on? They talked about sexism, lack of diversity and female mentors. An issue of time for personal life in whatever capacity is fairly concerning for any balanced human, not just for a woman.
yes, but these questions make more sense to a surgery resident or trainee looking at neurosurgery as a possible career option! I understand that these questions may seem moot, but considering the possibility of long surgeries, even longer on call hours, you do wonder how it affected their personal life, and if they are satisfied with the choices they made.
In that sense, this interview is gold!
Hi, I'm fourteen and I also aspire to be a neurosurgeon but people keep saying that I can't cause I'm a girl, I want to ask if I'm being selfish by dreaming big and is it possible to start a family.
If u remember there is a question in the video about a 15 Yr old boy who aspires to be a neurosurgeon....I'm that boy
,currently 19, pursuing my MBBS (5.5 yrs medical school in india) and will be pursuing 6 Yr residency right after mbbs. Be adherent to your goal and u'll get all success
Wow. Consultant surgeon. Pretty impressive.
Is Ms.McKenna on Instagram?
I find shameful that the fact that she is a woman has to be brought up during the WHOLE conversation. Who cares about her sex? She is a great neurosurgeon, and there could be many more interesting topics to discuss, like her interests or subspecialties of neurosurgery, and not talk about something that doesnt contribute at all.

It’s not about gender! neuro surgery take so many time in working and woman has an extra responsibilities especially when children are so young …
Video description.. MISS... please replace that into DR.
In the UK surgeons are Miss or Mr, not Dr.
@@Brainbook Didn't know that! 😲
Thank you for letting me know. 🤗
Learned so many things in this Q&A especially I want to pursue neurosurgery and at the same time have a family. She's incredibly an inspiration ☺️
No worries that's what we're here for! Good luck :)
@@Brainbook Hello! I have a video request... can you tesch us how to go through textbooks? ... especially neuroanatomy and Harrisons Internal medicine?
@@affiesaikol2035 do you mean how to actually learn from them?
It’s the most prestigious and painful field of medical.
Actually the most sadfull,Which mean most of cases death and some short of injury.
Really the battery. Get your shit together
Please help me sir please
Do neurosurgeons have time to raise dog?
Well nope because it is a busy job. The partner though can help out with it.
