  • Born Too Soon follows the stories of pre-term babies and the experiences of their parents and their extended families. My mom was a twin and a full term birth. She weighed 1.8 pounds. That was a home birth in 1919. They hadn't invented NICU or ventilators or incubators. She was kept in a laundry basket next to the stove. She was a miracle, too.

i was born in September of 1997 but I was supposed to be born around late December. I was twin, but the other one didn't make it due to us being so premature. We weighed around 1 pound and 3 oz. The doctors said I had a 10% chance of surviving and I spent 108 days in the NICU and I'm 19 now and I'm as healthy as ever.

Being a dad to premature twins and my first kids at same time, I can say I was scared out of my mind. They were so tiny to me. The first born 6 days later had his large intestine burst due to NEC. Christmas eve got a call at 11 pm. Never forget that phone ringing. I also remember being told he was dying. I cried out to God in despair at the though of him dying. Afterf a successfull surgery and 22 years later he is so active and healthy. No large intestine, no colostomy bag either. This last Christmas he told us he is going to be a daddy. Full circle. But now the fear and memories of what we went through came crashing back.
I also remember an even tinier baby that was next to my son. Hunter. All I remember is his dad staring through the incubator glass and just crying and talking to him. " Get bigger, get better, love you. Want to hold you son. ' made me feel so selfish just holding my son and his arms empty. I let him hold my son while talking to hunter. I don't know what happened to him. We were released 2 months later. Hunter was still in incubator BUT dad got to hold his son. We sat so close and cried together. Also remember the family from Saudia Arabia. I befriended the dad and helped him get food for his family a time or two. We became friends through adversity. So many small babies from all over the world.
To all that experience this, it IS scary. The Dr's and nurses do their best but with your love and support the babies can flourish. I can't remember the times I would go in and find the nurses crying over the children. So thankful to them for their love and caring for my sons. They were 4 lbs 6ozs and 4 lbs 7 ozs at birth. Now they 6 ft 1 inch tall and 186 lbs. Tough as nails.

I was born premature and had a 40% chance of survival. This was in 1983. I was kept in the NICU on machines to help me breathe. My mom who had a high risk pregnancy had gotten into a huge fight with my father just a few moments before her water broke at 33 weeks. Oddly enough I was also 33weeks pregnant with my son 3 years ago when I got into a fight with my father. I ended up needing an emergency c-section just a few hours later. I've heard stress can bring on early labor. Apparently fighting with my dad can cause premature birth since it happened to both my mom and I. I'd advise any pregnant women to stay far away from my father lol

My cousin was born at 6 months and this was back in the late 1970's plus our local hospital did not have the equipment or trained staff to care for him..So my aunt had to be driven 8 hrs away to a huge University teaching hospital. He weighed 2 pounds and had to stay in the hospital for a couple of months. He was born with an issue where the bones in the top of his head were not growing together so he had to be taken back to the hospital for surgery to correct this problem at 8 months..My poor aunt was a mess because after the surgery they told her to make sure he doesn't cry too hard because it could cause the surgery to open or something like that..So by the time he was healed she needed a mini vacation but like all mommies she would never leave her boy..Well her boy is now 6'4 married and has a blessed life..He was never behind in his developments he was talking in almost complete sentences at a year old and all through school he was skipping grades and then he graduated with honors from college. So his premature birth did not cause him to have to catch up like most premie babies experience.

I will never forget the micro-preemies that were in the NICU with my son. My son was premature, but he was 34 weeks and weighed 9lbs. He was a giant compared to the micro-preemies. I have witnessed families whose baby/babies did not make it. My heart still aches for them to this day, 16 years later. But I also witnessed miracles happen almost everyday in that Giant NICU, in Houston TX. To all the people out there with a Preemie, never lose hope. NICU babies are Warriors.

Ugh, my second kid was 10 weeks premature after I suddenly developed severe preeclampsia. This is bringing back a lot of memories. She was small for her age, only 2 pounds when she should have been around 3. Her arm from elbow to shoulder was the exact length and width as my thumb. She was a tough little snot, though, she never had any serious complications, came home after 8 weeks weighing a whole 4 lbs, lol. She's in middle school now, doing well, thank God. It was totally different than my first baby (same dad, lol), who was 2 weeks LATE, weighed almost 9 lbs. It's bizarre how different pregnancies can be, I'm glad my docs took good care of me and my girl, it could have been SO much worse. If you're pregnant, it's so important to take care of yourself, do what your doctor tells you, and listen to your body if you think something's wrong.

Always tried not to get depressed about it, but when you see these adorable intelligent orphans just waiting for parents....I don't know if China or Russia discontinued thier foreign adoptions.

How did you deliver at home? Was it fast or did you have symptoms and wait before going to the hospital thinking you weren't going into real labor? Was he actually born at 32 weeks at 2lbs or was he 32 weeks at the time of the post?? I apologize for all the questions but I'm so curious after losing 2 babies preterm and now being high risk pregnant having made it to 29 weeks I'm trying to get an understanding and seek out as much info as possible to get my baby here safely. my twins boy and girl were born on the 28th week of gestation, 3 months premature. we went through all the hell and misery of intensive care, I wouldn't wish that even upon my worst enemies.. the worst part was uncertainty where the doctors could not tell us anything definite as far as the babies' health in the future is concerned. prematurity can cause serious health issues for the rest of the child's life. God was kind to us: my children knock-knock-knock overcame all problems caused by prematurity. they are 12 y.o. now and it was certainly worth it every .minute and every effort we invested in them. Before I was born, my Mother had a premature baby. Her name was Meghan Rose, and she was at least a month premature. She had a sever genetic condition, and was born with one nostril, her eyes were fused shut, and 2 holes in her heart. She lived for a total of 10 hours, before passing away in my Father's arms. I remember my parents saying that one of the memories they will always cherish of that time, is that one of the nurses (they never found out who), knitted a tiny pink cap and dress, for their daughter. It ended up being the outfit she was buried in. That was more then 20 years ago. She now has a statue in her honor, sitting on our front porch. My niece (who shares her middle name), greets her every morning before school. I can't help but think, that my sister is watching over my niece.

The issue with the triplets wasn't premature labor, it was Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (the boys are identical twins technically). The smaller boy was dying, that's why they delivered them all early. If they weren't triplets there are other things they might have been able to do, like serial fluid reduction on the healthier one, but with 3 it probably wasn't possible.
If mom wasn't having premature labor it is much safer for her (and thus the babies) to be active: to prevent blood clots, high blood pressure, etc.

Lauren Grzeczka I can understand how you feel, I was a month premature myself. I was born 5lbs 8ozs and lost weight in the hospital, which is almost unheard of. I was still in 'womb mode' and would sleep excessively. My mother tried to breastfeed but I had trouble latching and had to be bottle fed. Whenever I needed to be fed, my parents or who ever was feeding me would have to flick the bottoms of my feet to keep me awake during the feeding. I had breathing problems for months afterwards, and had to undergo breathing treatments for most of my 1st year. I know that what my family experienced, while certaintly not the worst, was taxing and stressful. I also know however, that it was completely out of anyones control, as was your situation I assume.

As a first time parent, it was scary, upsetting but also had a lot of moments of joy. I have heaps of happy memories about my daughter's 10 weeks in hospital. I can honestly say it made me a better parent and 12 years later - we have a very close bond that I truly believe was strengthened by what I saw HER go through, as a tiny fragile baby. Wait..what? That lady with the triplets had a cesarean and 2 days later she's walking upright and even bending over like it's nothing. That's crazy and pretty amazing. When I had a C-section I could barely walk for over a week. .in the hospital they kept me in a wheelchair and I'd be pushed so I could go visit my premature son in the NICU. Once I was able to walk I was hunched over and kind of shuffling around. Anyone whose had a C-section knows how painful it is since they literally cut through your lower abdominal muscle. Standing upright is very painful especially so soon after the surgery. I know everyone is different but that's pretty amazing that she's walking so well only 2 days after the surgery.

Having child born too early is the scariest thing! My pregnant friend was in a car accident and she was ejected from the car! They had to deliver the baby but he is alive but is in rough shape... so very scary that he’s had major surgeries already and will have a very hard time... it is heartbreaking being born at just over 20 weeks, so frightening!!!!! I’m still watching this, it is devastating! The woman whom hit the mom and dads car was texting and driving and that to me is unacceptable as she has no injuries but the people she hit are one without teeth or use of legs and the other without use of one leg and was just a bubbly pregnant woman no in hospital with injuries and no baby and he is barely hanging on! Oh geesh I shouldn’t have started watching this! Tears the whole time!

I was induced at 35 weeks because baby wasn't growing properly anymore. She was in NICU for 20 days and was about 4 lbs. While I was there, the nurses were the most amazing people ever! The atmosphere in the department was very grim in general with parents hurting and worried but the nurses were so amazing at caring both for the babies and for the parents. So grateful for the help we get from modern medicine and for the amazing people that decide to become doctors and nurses!

I was born at 23 weeks and had lots of complications, spent around 80 days in the nicu, and baffled the doctors who were watching an appointment to see how I was developed. I’m in my teens now, and I feel like I’ve done well, despite the circumstances at birth. I hope anyone with premature children do well and have a good day!

My uncle was a twin. He was a little under 2 pounds. His twin died, but my uncle lived to be a big guy. He was a veteran too. The nurses didn't know what to do, so they decided to try taking turns turning him over and over in an incubator around the clock. He was the "bigger" of the premies. He was born in 1948. He is in that hospital's history records as "The Gould baby"

I was almost three months premature but I ended up fine. Everyone's experiences are different. I was in the NICU for ten days, and came home, but had to be kept inside until my due date. I'm thankful that I survived. I have an older brother, and due to my early birth, I have learning disabilities, eye muscle weakness that I got four surgeries for, fine motor skill issues, which makes my handwriting bad, and other minor things. I am healthy over all, so I am lucky. God bless those babies and their families. If you are reading this, and you have suffered a loss, I am so so sorry. If you are pregnant and reading this, good luck to you. May your baby be happy and healthy.

I was releases from the hospital on Christmas eve and i cried my eyes off when i had to leave them there. They spent 76 days in the nicu and their dad and i came to see them everyday. When we were there some times they would call a code pink over the intercom which meant another baby was on its way to the nicu i would pray for that baby everytime i heard that. Thankfully my girls are 7yo now, happy, healthy and beautiful. I'll always be greatful for all the nurses who helped them even the ones that werent so kind to me as such a young mom.

I actually gave permission for my son to be experimented on in 1982 as he was 1pound 10 ounces. because of the results using phenyl barbitol on newborns it dramatically reduced brain swelling and retardation of brain function. That was the hardest decision I have ever made and also the best. They no longer use that drug but it led to the use of even more effective treatments.

After 2 weeks on IC he was doing better...now 18 but he has some brain damage after being short of oxygen. 2nd boy he was early(7w.early 4 pounds) but managed well, till now he's 13, my girl almost cost mine and her life after having HELLPSYNDROME born 9 w.early and 2 weeks behind in growing only 2 pounds, they had to take her out to at least save 1 life... gladly she made it, now 9 years...They're so strong, willing to live...infections are the worst enemies in this "process"...Lot of strength to all moms who have to go through this...much much love to you big hugs💕

3 days “overdue” is a joke. Only 4% of women give birth on their so-called due date. Especially with twins, they are smaller, so a good mother would have waited till they were ready. But of course the medical business is always pushing their services and procedures.

God, I remember that feeling of being empty and not having anything to show for it. It’s a horrible feeling. Knowing other mothers are all around you holding, cuddling their babies and you don’t have one to cuddle. 28 years ago, we lost our baby girl after what had seemed like a normal, full term pregnancy. We went on to have two healthy boys, bringing our count to three, but, even after all these years I remember that feeling. It doesn’t matter if it is only temporary, the pain isn’t any less. Blessings to any mother having to experience that feeling.
