When people call Jeff Beck overrated it says far more about them than Beck. The man is simply unparalleled in his command of melody and nuance, and he is one of the greatest "trick bag" guitarists ever. He uses pretty commonplace gear, but you never mistake him for someone else. Granted, his catalog is uneven, so there are some clunkers in there, but that's true of any artist who continually takes chances and pushes the envelope.
That’s a great analysis! Would love to have you subscribe if not already! Thanks
Anyone who thinks J Beck is over rated have them listen to Where We're You, all harmonics and tremolo. When someone like D Gilmour says he can't play it people should listen
JEFF BECK is without doubt the most overrated guitar player ever. Literally nobody knows who he is - that's a clue not a sign he is a 'players player'....can't name one good solo or riff/chord progression and neither can anyone else when asked... ? people think they are 'cool' saying they like him and he is this and that ..... Pretentious rubbish liked by a few...Clapton made blues popular again, jimi simply blew people's minds, keith had his riffs, jimi had his riffs, svr was hendrix for the 80/90's, how in any way can people compare beck to that?!
@@richat1691 Reread the first sentence in my comment *slowly*.
!!!!!DITTO!!!!! Carey. Beck has been my all time favorite guitarist since I first heard him on the first Yardbirds album in 1965.
I remember back when AC/DC were doing PR for Ballbreaker, one of their comeback albums, from the mid-90s, I think. They did an interview, I believe it was in GuitarWorld magazine, but Im not sure. Angus said something like: 'Ohhh, some critics like to say we've made the same album 12times....but I think we must have done it at least 15 times by now...

@@GearGasms Since you asked so nicely...
Pretty sure I heard him make a similar comment about only changing the covers on the albums...maybe on Howard Stern.
Angus also said he only knew one solo and made a career of it
Honeyroll is a masterful riff
I don't think anyone has EVER said Kurt Cobain was a great guitar player. I would say just decent enough for a three piece band to fill up the sound with something.
Only Rolling Stone who him top 20
@@GearGasms Oh, that one magazine I never read and never take seriously... got it! For those who don't know, for those who want to know, for those who don't care to know, Rolling Stone Magazine does not take music seriously. It really just focuses more on an artists or band's public image. I think the origins of that magazine was that it was kinda like some sort of Rock/Fashion magazine with lots of pictures of musicians and articles to make the artists seem like they have some god like powers. I guess the old days of Elvis and Jim Morrison when people kinda focused more on the presence than the music was what gave the magazine people the idea to make that be their magazine theme and they've kinda stuck with that since.
And Slash & Keith richards. Their music is amazing
Kurt was a great COMPOSER, not guitar player
I don't think Cobain was an overrated guitarist, I've never heard anyone say he was any good.
The people who say Eddie Van Halen's career was defined only by Eruption have clearly never listened to his playing on tracks like Spanish Fly, Cathedral, or the solo heard on Feelin'. His skills aside, Eddie was an inventor who made advancements not only in his playing but in the guitar itself. He was one of the first guitar players who tested out the Floyd Rose Tremolo System, and even made suggestions on how to improve it. He constantly tinkered with his instruments on his endless quest of chasing tone, and practically reinvented the instrument along the way. People who say Eddie Van Halen was overrated say that only cause many other musicians have since come along and started doing their own stuff with the techniques Eddie did. I may not have been born in the 1970s, but I realize just how new Eddie Van Halen's playing was at the time.
His rhythm playing gets overlooked
He's the reason I started playing the electric guitar at all. I just started playing 3 years ago. And sadly, it was a few months into my lessons that he passed away.
He's way over rated I mean waaaaaaaay
That guy sucked, he was a scrawny meth addict who was in denial of his illness. His music is the same three cowboy chords and solos are just chromatic madness, which unremarkable. He did have a fast whacking hand which probably explains the tremolo picking. Either that or it was just hand tremors from boozing all the time. No wonder he liked Clapton - another twat that’s seemingly immortal. Crazy how all the good ones die young
Edward was great but he peaked as a guitarist and when Roth left, it became obvious. He hasnt been relevent for 30 years. Thats the truth none of his fans will admit; which says something about them. Just a bunch of slurpers
My God. Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen are to guitarists as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are to basketball players.
Great analogy! Would love to have you subscribe if not already! It's free and it really, really helps the channel! Thanks!!!
People that say EVH is overrated probably think Slash is a guitar god.
Love the comparison. No one born in the 60’s would have some of these legends on this list. These guys invented the genre.

Well said dude! Most of those that voted probably can't pick their own nose with any skill let alone a guitar 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! YES! I have not sold one record EVER! In spite of being a spectacularly mediocre guitarist!
I was 14 and saw Eddie and the boys in 1979. You're right, context matters. When he hit the scene back then he changed the guitar world forever. And no guitar player alive since then has had a greater impact than EVH. I am so glad I WAS THERE at the birth of the next guitar legend. RIP Eddie.
Saw them in 80 and agree!
So long as you know he didn't invent finger tapping like many fans have claimed. That's been around since the jazz players of the late 50's early 60's.
🤘🏻
Eddie had the amazing tricks. I could not stomach what a A hole David Lee Roth was around the last tour with them and before Eddie died
The problem is, not much changed with his style and technique for his entire lifetime.
The only one that grinds my gears is Jimmy Page. I know he was infamous for sloppy play live sometimes, but I have to say, the night I saw him he came out with licks that literally gave me goosebumps. He was incredible.

Then I watched your video for 10 reasons not to subscribe.
I am now subbed.
My very first concert was Rush/Mott/KISS dec.20th 1975. It was Peter Criss' birthday and Paul led us in singing happy birthday to him.
Oh man - good to know the trailer got me at least one sub! Welcome to the family! I bet that show was awesome!
I’m glad Jimmy Page is #1 on this list. Totally accurate.
Any normal pro musician who played as many duff notes live as Page would be sacked.
He got away with it for some unknown reason - all smoke and mirrors
It boggles my mind how people like to say that EVH always played the same thing. People like that never actually paid any attention to his music. The man was the greatest rhythm guitar player ever, and that alone tells you that he didn't "always play the same thing". The only thing about EVH that I didn't like was that he played the same solo in concert for decades. Otherwise he was the greatest ever, and that's saying something with so many greats out there.

Try learning to play any 2 evh songs....then tell me they're the same lol
I have to say that when I listen to his solo show-off pieces I see an evolution. He kept stuff, added stuff, took stuff out and his solos weren't just playing fast. He always had melodic, musical threads running through them which kept them interesting. And who said "no emotion?" His playing was dripping with emotion. God some people really have no idea of what actual reality is.

These videos are of course click bait. Hendrix and Page Beck etc didn’t spend their days comparing what number they are on the list of great players . That’s for us fans and you know it’s all or mostly opinion. There are some objective things too . I was thinking about Clapton when asked about Zeppelin, he said they did some good stuff, they were to heavy and loud , something like that , Clapton Hendrix Beck et Al never wrote a Rain song or Kashmiri , ten years gone , Achilles last stand etc . Page made his mark thats why he’s my number one. In my book.
@@22julip Howlin Wolf wrote Killing Floor, and Robert Johnson was ripped off for The Lemon song. Clapton ripped Johnson off for Crossroads.
The only other plausible explanation for stairway to heaven is page was adjusting spokes in his days as a bike mechanic and spun an out of tension wheel .
I love your personality and humour haha I was smiling and laughing throughout the whole video. Thank you!
You’re welcome! There’s a lot more funny here if you’re interested! Would love to have you subscribe if not already! Thanks
Really??? EVH? This guy was a pioneer. His music and playing will live on forever.
Agree 100%
It would actually have been very very comical to hear some of the names that these voters would suggest should supersede the guitarists on this list.
So true ! i am not even a fan of the band . But to say he is overrated is just ignorant . He is the reason you see humbuckers in strat style guitars . And the guy who basically put tapping on the map . People had done it before him , but never the way he did it . In the 80's he was probably the most copied .. guitarist of all time .
Yeah. Anyone putting Eddie on this list needs to pull up VHs first four albums, put down the crack pipe, listen to them while being reminded there was only one guitarist in the band, and realize that the term "finger tapping" had yet to be coined.
Most bogus list ever. Actual musicians/guitarists would disagree with almost everyone on it.
Anyone who thinks EVH was overrated never had the opportunity to hear the needle drop on that first record when it came out in 1977. In the context of that point in time, nobody had ever done anything which had all other guitarists wondering just how the hell he did it.
You're exactly the kind of viewer/commenter that this channel needs! Please say you'll subscribe and continue to participate in our growing community! It really helps the channel so I thank you so much either way!
Doesn't stop it from being meandering pap though, does it? Great riff and song writer, but dem solos stink. Tasteless, abstract noodlewank.
As a former rock bass player I always thought EVH was a terrific guitarist but the man was either unwilling or unable to play over a moving bass line. The almost single handedly ruined rock bass for a generation.
It came out in 78 not 77.
You have all of that so right. I was listening to the radio late night in '78 when "Eruption and You Really Got Me-perhaps the best cover ever) came on the radio and my mind was as they say blown.
You are a trip. Thank you for the video!
You are welcome!
I’ve played for decades and still remember the day I dropped the needle on VH1.
EVH blew away everyone.
After I heard eruption I felt like I should just give up.
Obviously someone who impressed the hell out of guitar players all over the world right from the start can never be overrated.
Not just his lead and solo work.
His composition , rhythm and fills were one of a kind.
Seeing him live in 1980 is still my greatest concert!
EVH is a category of its own. I respect opinions, but in my opinion, he is a true genius!
@@GearGasms 1979 here and it is still the best ever. My jaw and everyones at the concert were on the ground.
I bet!
I have nothing against VH, I liked them from the early 80s. But for Eddie to think he invented tapping makes him overrated.
A bizarre but highly entertaining list. I can't remember laughing as much on a video like this. Keep up the good work.

Jeff Beck is unique. His technique is amazing, espeacially in regard to the whammy bar, harmonics, technique, and the like.
He is very creative. Hendrix respected his playing.
EVH gave us tapping, speed, tremelo bar magic, sound effects, and whatever else. His playing reinvigorated rock guitar. He cannot be overrated.
Joe B. Is a great guitarist.
Finally, Jimmy Page, who is not my favorite, is nevertheless, a legendary guitarist.
I do not see how he could be overrated based on the body of guitar work he has created.

I always thought Jeff Beck was unique as well, in a good way. Every listen to Rory Gallagher? Probably my favorite guitarist ever
Agreed with everything you said. Page did the 1 handed 2 finger pull off which from Ed's own mouth in that interview he said to the audience that it was him seeing Page do that when he saw that but as we all know took it too a new level with transposing the nut and actually making music with it versus a lick in a song. Lol
Just because Jeff Beck's name is mentions less than most guitar players doesn't mean he's underrated it means he sucks so terribly that mentioning him once is too much set a Fender Stratocaster in front of any blindfolded two-year-old
🤘🏻😎
Wow... Just wow. I'm having a difficult time imagining what must be going through a person's head when they say a man like EVH is overrated. I mean, he only reinvented the way that people play the guitar and single handedly changed rock forever. You gotta think about the era he existed in too. He didn't have any UA-cam videos to watch that unlocked the secrets of guitar instantly. In my eyes, Spanish Fly was pretty wild for it's time. And remember that in those days, things weren't all digital yet and you actually had to bring your A game to the studio instead of sitting in your computer chair doing 300 takes to get a riff properly recorded. I'm not a huge fan of EVH, but you gotta give the dude props for showing us all the way.
As for Malmsteen - he may be repetitive at times, but when he lays it down, he frigging LAYS IT DOWN. A couple great examples are the intro to Fire and Ice (especially that transition from shredding to the initial main riff. Sooooo tasty), and the lead-up to the solo in Valhalla. Honestly, they just don't produce guitarists like him anymore, but I can see how his style may not appeal to everyone.
I do understand why this list is the way it is though. Today's guitarist almost seems to prefer the guitar be tuned waaaaay down and played like a polyphonic percussive instrument, which is perfectly fine, but very different in basically all approaches.
When guys like George Bellas, Frank Gambale, Mattias Eklundh, Bumblefoot, Guthrie Govan, Chris Impellitteri, Micheal Romeo, Steve Morse, etc get called overrated, then we have a serious problem lol. Those are some VERY underrated and underplayed guitarists that deserve to be praised. $10 says most people haven't even heard of half those guys, but they've been around forever and they will change the way you look at lead guitar. Might be worth looking at those dudes for your next underrated video if you haven't covered them already. Especially Mattias Eklundh. The dude is a nutcase on the guitar.

Check out the video "British guitarist reacts to Jeff Beck..." to see an analysis of why it's ridiculous that he's on this list. His control of the instrument leaves everyone else in the dust. His command of note intonation (with the whammy) is in a league of ONE. Watch the entire DVD show "Live at Ronnie Scotts" and then tell me he's over-rated. DUH!
That Ronnie Scotts show was just jaw-dropping. Blow by Blow and Wired amazing.
People are stupid thinking that Jeff Beck is overrated
Truly stupid
Ya when I heard his name mentioned I threw up in my mouth just a bit. Ridiculous. He's amazing. Anyone that disagrees has no idea of how to really play a guitar.
If someone's playing doesn't move you, it doesn't matter what someone's analysis says or how much he controlled the instrument. If you don't feel it, all that means nothing.
@@marcmarc1967 I call it listener musically challenged
I literally laughed out loud at this list, especially at the idiots who missed a major point, and that is that EVH was also one of the greatest rhythm guitar players of all time. His groove, his swing, his feel and his pocket are unmatched in rock and roll. That's why so many contemporary players have great technique but can't swing or play in time and can't recognize it in players who can. It's pretty sad, actually

I like how when the GearGasms guy picked his own top ten, he used clips of the guitarists in question sounding terrible, but when he showed the users' top 10, he mostly used clips of them sounding great (except where impossible like with Cobain and Morello). Nicely done. :-D

Anyone who says otherwise is a shit player
Eddie Van Halen? You kiddin? These are John Petrucci followers. Not that he's no good but Eddie invented a new genre. Jimmy Page. The master of riffing. Yngwie. You may not like him or his music but invented the metal shred genre. Idiots who suck at guitar..
Jeff healey is so brilliant one of the best guitarist ever he deserves more recognition for hes awesome playing a guitar hero to me anyway.
Jimmy Page is always a target for these types of lists. And yet, modern rock and roll wouldn’t be the same without him. Same as EVH and Hendrix. All the great guitarists we all know and love cite him as a top influence. His weaknesses and strengths as a soloist are well documented (he admits to them himself) but as the video demonstrates, when on his game, he’s one of the most exciting, spontaneous and emotional rock players of all time. In Dazed and Confused live, alone, he evokes funk, psychedelia, blues, metal and even folk. Then you have about 20 other songs in that one concert. No one covered that much ground in a single show, and he did it night after night. Trolls will be trolls I guess. And Jeff Beck overrated? Whatever

Well stated Dan, nice job. I played in a great Zeppelin tribute for 8 years, and even though I'd known the material for ages and had played a lot of styles in bands, it was still a challenge capturing the different moods for each track because the material covered so much ground. His solos in the original TSRTS album (not that BS remaster) on No Quarter, Dazed (especially the last one!!), and the boogie section of Whole Lotta Love are peerless. Plus, he wove a tapestry of rhythm and lead as one like few ever have. Beck may have been more consistent as a soloist, but he never had that seamless blend of lead and rhythm. Plus, as a visionary composer Page had few peers in the rock world.
@@jonathanhathaway7796 couldn’t have said it better myself. He’s a very unique player with lots of unusual quirks. His playing, and phrasing, and rhythmic stylings are surprising and a little warped. This gives Zeppelin its hooky, memorable edge. Plus he’s always in the pocket on rhythm with lots of really cool fills. Just an awesome musician. Here’s proof: many advanced players who followed Page often covered Zep (thinking about Paul Gilbert and EVH) and as incredible as those guys are, they just don’t capture Page’s magic when playing Zeppelin.

My guess, No, Fuck No!!!
Probably a bunch of guys who only play Cowboy chords or are still trying to be the next Stevie Ray. To be fair, music isn't a sport. I love different players for different reasons. I preferred Hendrix riffs over his solos, I preferred Pages riffs over his solos, though he at times had a great happy medium, Clapton bores me to death, but I like his songwriting at times, Gilmour has a way of doing more with less like no one else, EVH was one of the cleanest players I've ever heard, Beck is a friggin Wizard, but musically would be a bit too try hard for me. I appreciate every player I come across. It's what makes guitar fun. The little idiosyncrasies that separates us all. Just a big ol bag of tricks that keep on coming 🤙

Every teenager who's never bothered to learn more than 2 chords on the guitar highly rates his guitar playing. They genuinely believe he plays the smells like teen spirit like he does in the music video. Ive had people say to me only Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were good enough to play guitar left handed as if being a left handed guitar player makes you more skilled and only Hendrix and Cobain are the only 2 guitarist who play guitar left handed. These are the people who rate Cobain as a guitar player yet wont even rate his songwriting.

Because he was a popular guitar player that sucked?

Right on the money!

ya for sure. I like a little dose of Prince one in a while. Not over rated just an acquired taste.

That's the sickest clip of Angus you could find. Looks like you dug Bette Davis up and strapped a guitar on her. Loved it!
Lol
ANGUS: I never thought of him as a great guitarist. I just always thought of him as making great sound!
I love his hyper vibrato though!
@@GearGasms Angus Young was determined to melt your face, period! :-) I was reading up on the band and their sound and how Angus was determined to go as loud as possible. I saw them in concert years ago and Angus was a nut! For example, he jumped off the top of a stack, I don't know how many feet, but it was pretty high and he landed on his back and everything went quiet. Including the audience. I was thinking; "Oh, crap! He just busted his back!" After about 30 seconds, you start hearing some notes playing, then louder, faster, then he's still laying down, but now more on his side and he's kicking his feet and actually spinning himself around and around on the floor, faster, while his playing gets louder and faster. Suddenly he jumps up and runs off the stage. You hear him still playing, but don't see him. A minute later, he's being carried out into the crowd on security's shoulder (6 of them) and they're walking him down the little aisle between the sections, as he's leaning over into the crowd jamming his little heart out. :-)
I remember that clearly, because I never saw a jump from that high before and as soon as he started to speed toward the edge I was like, "Nooo!" I thought he was gonna break something and everybody thought he did, but he made it! :-)
Should have been No.1 on this list. So limited in ability and vastly overrated.
I think Angus's clean open chord playing is pretty damn good.
Jimmy Page once said, "There are great guitar players, and then there's Jeff Beck".
Thanks for chiming in! What I do here is sorta garbage but it's almost kinda decent at times! If you would be so charitable and kind as to subscribe, it really helps out more than you know and is absolutely free!
One thing I don't like about Beck is that he doesn't use a pick. That not only makes it much easier but it limits what you can do. He is great though.
Was surprised to see Beck on the list. I don't particularly care for the way he plays guitar but the sounds he is able to evoke are impressive.
Who cares what the number one overrated guitarist says? 🤪
@@rodsmolter5046 Beck plays better without a pick. To me using a pick is easier
"Overly busy but not overly complicated". I think that describes a lot of "guitar gods". So many guitarists seem like they just want to cram as many notes in as possible before the singer gets back from break. That's why I like people like David Gilmour and even George Harrison. Both very melodic soloists. By the way, I posted this before viewing past #10, so I don't know if either of these guys are on this list.

People who think these guitarist are overrated doesn't know about genre, history, even worst.. don't know how many strings are used to play the guitar in general.

Every musician is overrated and underrated at the same time by different groups of people. It’s all based on personal opinion most of the time when they are labeled as “overrated”. I have personally never been a fan of Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones for example and I know that I can get a lot of hate for saying that but I don’t care because it’s just my personal opinion. But I wouldn’t even dare to argue with the fact that they are 2 of the greatest bands of all time. May not be some of my favorites but if it weren’t for them, several of my favorite bands probably wouldn’t even exist today.
Five!!! I'll bet you it's five strings, right?
@@buckmurdock2025 yeh you're right.. considering octave it's six string on a guitar in general.

PRINCE: I originally didn't think that much of him as a guitar player, although of course "Purple Rain" has a beautiful solo. But I really only heard his stuff on the radio now and then, until the 1999/2000 New Year's Eve performance he did. My wife loved him and wanted to see it and I have to admit, that night I became a big Prince fan! He blew my mind! The man could perform and he could play that guitar! And I'd try to catch Live performances whenever I could. It's a different ball game when he's on stage and I tell people that if you're not a big fan of his guitar playing, it's because you didn't watch him live! There's a pretty decent example (not his best though) of his playing here on UA-cam, where a number of greats got together on stage to play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (incl George Harrison) and when it comes time for the solos, Prince walks onto the stage, blows them all away, throws the guitar up in the air and walks off (like, "I know what I just did."). If you look for it, just make sure it's the version that says, "Director's Cut". So no, I don't think he's overrated. I think he's way underrated! And I personally put him up to at least the Top 5 Ever!
Great comment!
Thank you for typing that first
I find the video entertaining, which is great because that’s what I turned in for. I don’t agree with many of the choices, and I whole heartedly agree with others. Bottom line is that taste in guitarists is subjective, as well as everything else. So people have widely varying opinions on EVERYTHING! That’s what keeps it interesting and hopefully entertaining.

You read my mind! From the off I was thinking "kids who like Dragon Force voted for these! Now I've nothing against Dragon Force but their music is not the sort of thing I listen too. Just playing as fast as you can does not make you a great player. It makes you competent. It shows you've practiced your scales a lot. However there are a million kids out there who can do that. Some of the players on this list are more great song writers than players. Keith would never put himself in a list of great players as he is steeped in blues history and would choose his heroes. Actually apart from Yngwe who thinks he is the best ever, they'd all pick their heroes!🤣.
I think you nailed that comment.
All these guitarists have one thing in common, they get more respect from more people than anyone who voted on this list will EVER get for THEIR guitar playing!

He did the tricks but apart from Eruption, (which he didn't want to record), Van Halen played pop songs very loud without dragged out pretentious solos!. I remember 78 when he turned the guitar world on it's head.
my favourite Eddie playing is when they did Won't Get Fooled Again with Sammy in the studio when they made it sound better than the Who's original with 1 guitar & no kbs!.
ps Micheal Schenker was my guitar hero in the 70's.

I agree, Keef takes simple ideas and concepts and turns them into something wonderful. Its all about the wrist action on his right hand. His live lead playing can be terrible however

I agree with of this list with the exception of Hendrix. He pioneered many things with 60’s tech and was miles ahead of anyone else at the time. No locking tremelo’ s we’re made so doing things that are common today resulting in tuning instability. Would it have been better for him to just not push the envelope because of possible timing issues?

Kurt Cobain was overrated? I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone bring his name up in a guitar conversation, much less say he was good. Same with Prince, no one really brings up Prince and guitar.
You must not be looking at the same lists as me. It's not a lot but Prince especially makes these types of lists. But yeah people just came in loaded for Kurt lol.
Right? Never sat down to discuss guitarists ( and I have, a lot) and had anyone bring up curt..... it's like bringing up Bob dylan..... yeah, he plays guitar, but, he is more the lead vocalist.... and rarely does a solo.... Prince, though, has been brought up..... by people who are over hearing the conversation, and are Prince fans..... we all roll our eyes, and keep talking.... can't be considered a guitarist if you don't actually play guitar on all your songs.
Cobain was a GENIUS!!!! Hes a song writer tho.. not some show boating lead guitarist.. in the 90s/2000s, Kurt was the reason ALOT of people picked up the guitar.. dude is an ICON

How the hell is Angus Young overrated? I've never once heard someone say that Angus Young was the greatest guitar player ever. He's my favorite guitarist just because of the way he plays and because he's a riff machine! But other than that there's nothing that should warrant people saying that he's overrated
Angus young a riff machine???
I like Angus but anybody can play open chords on a gibson through a cranked marshall and sound god like
Malcolm was the riff machine in AC/DC
Angus played basic caveman rock for neanderthals. Yaaaaawwwwwn.
Angus is not overrated, he's underrated. He's a monster who conjures more feel, energy, and commitment than almost anyone on earth, and he does it while doing moves that most of us couldn't do without falling down, never mind ripping an incredible blues-based solo. You don't think so? Try it, two steps per foot, while shaking your head up and down. Now do an killer, memorable solo.
I think there's a lot of people (including myself) who notice that he just never changed his playing over the years. No innovation. He's still playing the same Pentatonic scales and never moved on. I haven't bought an AC/DC CD since "Flick of the Switch" in 1983.
Jeff beck plays beautifully and has some really complex melodies
I lost a lot of respect for him when he refused to share the stage with Kurt Rosenwinkel at the Crossroads concerts. And do you know why he refused? Because Kurt would’ve wiped the floor with him! 🤣 True talk 😐 Boomers don’t like being upstaged it hurts their enormous egos.

Context is huge. Guys like Page, Beck, and EVH changed how people approach rock guitar. If all you judge a player by is technique, then yeah, they have all been surpassed. But in terms of influence and originality they will always be great.
Yes
Agreed. Otherwise we'd all be listening to Polyphia (shudder)
Page wrote the hardest rhythm parts on this list. The chords he uses are indeed hard to play live with a strap that low. Anyway, even so, the solo you showed him performing was pretty rad. It seems on some of these entries people focus more on solos than the songs they wrote. Maybe make a separate 'underrated soloist' list? But yeah, I don't think any of the other guys on this list wrote something as nuanced as 'The Rain Song' (Maybe Prince, with the hundreds of songs he composed).

Honestly I personally feel that if you play exactly what's on the record it's completely uncreative and it makes such a boring live performance because then you know exactly how it is and exactly how it sounds. Led Zeppelin made songs to be live they were legendary for a reason and I think that's because of the improvisation and chemistry on the stage not because of their records. They had some serious performances and saying that they couldn't play what's on the record is wrong they just didn't want to. I think a lot of bands now are so sick and tired of their songs because they don't change anything about it.
Agree 100% - Jimmy was not afraid of beginning a journey and taking us with him! Would love to have you subscribe if not already! Thanks Yep! 🤘🏻🎸
Yeah, one thing Page wasn't was a human jukebox, he rarely played a solo the same way twice in the studio let alone live! Page was about feel and once you listen to enough live shows you find the times when the band was hitting on all cylinders and when they weren't...when they did it was incredible! I'm a massive fan of Page and have absolutely no problem with him being listed as one of the best and one of the most overrated, he was both. Where he wasn't overrated was as a songwriter and arranger.
@@revgregory Agreed!
I could be wrong about this, but people that complain about things not sounding live like it did on the record are one of two kinds of people. 1. They don't go to actual live shows but watch or listen to the cleaned up and produced "live" shows on TV or Live albums. Hardly anyone can do it, especially someone like Page who at times had so many overdubs and guitar tracks he would seriously have to replicate himself to do it correct. 2. People that go to tribute band shows. Those guys have to nail it or people get angry. I don't really like tribute band shows.
Jimmy Page took huge, ballsy risks that most guitarists wouldn’t attempt. Massive feel and musicality. He was the greatest when “on”. He’s in the line of balls out guitarists and pioneers that I think includes Hendrix, EVH and Blackmore. Hendrix could be pretty sloppy too but these guys are the Mount Rushmore of guitar rock. Also, Page is among the absolute greats of rhythm guitar. That should be undisputed. Finally, no one in rock history, except maybe Hendrix, blended so many ideas, styles, sounds and textures into a single song than Page, and then multiplied that by 100 in a concert! Eventually, drugs and age took their toll on his ability to that seamlessly like he did 71-73.
I swear I made this list myself. Thankyou. Perfect picks brother!!!!!!!! Wanna see people be upset? Is it the guitar player or is it a gibson thing?

I've been playing for over 40 years and I shook my head at a few of them but when I saw EVH on this list it is undeniably created by viewers who do not even play. EVH has contributed more for Rock guitar than any other with exception to the creator Les Paul. When I first heard Eruption I was stunned into silence and for the next 5 albums they all were filled with crazy new techniques. Zakk Wylde said it best, " that little Dutch dude blew the garage door off when he hit the scene." He could have retired half way through Eruption.
