Virtual memory for your computer is hard drive space used by Windows when it fills up the physical RAM. Let’s say you have a computer that has 1 GB of RAM and you’re running several applications at once that might need a total of 1.5 GB of memory. Windows will fill up the 1 GB and then uses the free space on the hard drive to store the rest. This is called the paging file or virtual memory and Windows will increase and decrease the size of this file as needed. Writing to disk takes much longer than writing to physical RAM, so when Windows uses the paging file, computer performance degrades.
That’s why you’ll always hear people asking if you have enough RAM because the more RAM you have, the better your computers’ performance will be. However, we can tweak the virtual memory settings so that the paging file does not get fragmented and so that Windows does not have to grow or shrink the size of the paging file, both of which will cause the computer to slow down, especially on older machines.
By default, Windows uses the boot partition (the partition that contains your operating system files) and it is recommended to set the size of the paging file to 1.5 times the amount of RAM that you have.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops,and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).
Don't use the recommended page size at the bottom. Change minimum to 1.5 times the amount of RAM your PC has and change max to 3 times the amount of RAM your PC has. So if you have 8GB of RAM then min should be 12,288mb (12GB) and max would be 24,576MB (24GB). If you have 16GB of RAM then min 24,576mb and max 49,152mb. Just make sure your hard drive has more space than the max page size. Meaning if your max page size is 48GB, then you'll need at least 48GB of space on your hard drive, otherwise it won't let you apply the settings. This is what's recommended! If you have multiple drives, you should set the page size for all of them.

Was wondering why I got a weird flashing red screen whenever I log into windows for a minute or 2 and this has been happening months on end but could never find a fix for it, following this video changing the virtual memory solved my problem and made my computer so much faster. @@zzzzzzzz440 its fix now i just try to reset to original virtual memory. Then i just let my pc diagnose itself for error from black screen. Then my pc tell me to install vga control panel and i setting my vga config voila its fix and more speed haha alhamdulillah.. Thx god
That's actually page file size, not virtual memory.
I had 9GB of alocated page file and now I reduced to 3GB, but the virtual memory is still as high as 25GB for some reason

Wow - I can confirm this fixes "Steam lags out my computer while downloading" bug. For more than a year I agonized: Games played perfectly on steam, even Arc/Crysis - however while DOWNLOADING a game, my video editing rig turned into the reincarnation of my malware-ridden Celeron Netbook from 2004. Even my *Mouse* lagged out. Download finished? Fine again.
NORMALLY - someone with 32 gigs of ram should never have to even *think* about PageFile, but Windows 10 has a Fatal Bug related to that "automatically adjust" checkbox. I'm still blown away. After years of suffering, updating BIOS, trying network drivers, editing registry, disabling high precision event timer in CMD...THIS CHECKBOX WAS the ISSUE!

It should not be too high as it would make your system slower. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 1.5 times your physical RAM but not more than 3 times

I had 10GB for Virtual Memory for some reason and it was taking up a bunch of storage so I changed it to recommended for initial and 1.5x recommended for the maximum (I wanted to save space)

If you have 16GB RAM or more guys, remove the virtual RAM by selecting "No paging file" to speed up your computer, Virtual RAM is slow
what if i have 4GB?
My pc has a recommended 2921 MB but it is set as 9216 by default. Isn’t this above the 1.5X?

if you have a mining rig, and for example you have 3 1080 ti graphic cards, each with 11 gigabytes of vram, so you have 33 gb of vram, set your initial size to just over that 33 gb, like basically set the initial size to 34000 and your machine will mine at the right performance, you should always know this when installing windows on your rig. so if i have 64 gb of vram on my mining rig, ill set my initial and maximum size to both 65000 and yea thats basically it, also never forget drivers.
Thank you MD TECH. Its 2024 and Win 11 already on my HP (1y old - 2023) with only 8GB of RAM. So after checking up the System info i ran on this so called "Total Virtual memory" - 16.5GB , "Total physical memory" - 7.65GB ; "page file space" - 8.83GB Not being sure or so familiar with computers, i immidiately typed in on YT! And Voila!! Still need to research this other "Comp-expresions" to know more about my mini machine-> I totaly overpaid it 1 year ago! Thank you again, IT was so helpfull!

Bro plz help me in partition of C drive in my laptop. I'm unable to do it, even after running the command of powercfg/h off, disabling windows protection and also Unclicking Automatic paging size to no paging size... I applied your way exactly, restarted and checked my DVM: no change at all. That doesn't work for me: 64bit system, 32Mb RAM, 128Mb DVM.
32mb or gb of ram? Either the 32 mb is the minimum amount in which case you should use the recommend amount which will be much higher or the 32mb is a different setting that relates to dumps for the kernel.

@@MDTechVideos I have 32GB of RAM. My recommended virtual memory size is 4985 MB. 1.5x the recommended is 7500 MB, but if I used 1.5x times the MB of RAM I have, it comes to 49,152 MB (32 MB x 1,024 MB/GB x 1.5 = 49,152). A 40,000 MB discrepancy is fine? Or am I missing something?

Yes that is a huge difference for adjusting the virtual memory size from the recommended vs. the amount of RAM in the computer. I'm defintely more confused now since he said that you could do either but theyre vastly different

Because you will brick your computer otherwise. Vram higher than physical ram will absolutely annihalte everything as windows will try to use the vram instead on boot which needs to be called from the ram but if you have inferior ram to vram it wont boot, and it will essentially brick your windows install. So go ahead and try it 🙂 don't know why you question it

@@KlMJONG-UN Agree. The swap file is just an addition to the RAM. I have 16GB of RAM in my laptop, according to the Task Manager, programs use only 10GB, why should I make the Swap File large: 32GB or 40GB?
I made a Pagefile 2048MB - 2048MB (initial and maximum size) and the laptop has been working well for 1.5 years.

I need 8000 something to run AoE4 but I only have like 1000 something free(I’m assuming in my allocated since it’s 6144) but it says space available 79104 so if I for say set it the maximum to 10000 would that work

Since i did the last windows 10 update a couple weeks ago my laptop has been freezing completely after about an hour of use when i use my music recording software, or my art program (GIMP) but it never did this before the update. I was looking into how to fix this issue online and adjusting the virtual memory space was mentioned in several sites like exactly what your doing here. The thing is I have a 64-bit operating system and one site said that this method of creating more virtual space will only apply to a 32-bit operating system, but i cannot find that information anywhere else except for the one site and your vid here doesnt mention that either although i saw that you have a 32-bit operating system. Would this still work on my laptop with the 64-bit operating system? Thanks!

the code literally tells you the problem. is 1.5x recommended value higher than your available vram? if it is then thats why mabye. or you set it too low. it has something to do with your page file space

I have a question. So my laptop RAM is 2GB, and after changing the virtual memory, it still works slowly. I decided to upgrade it. My question is, do I need to change the virtual memory back after the upgrade? Maybe, clicking the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives"? Or is it okay to just leave it?
First replace your 2GB Ram With 8GB Ram and if your using HDD drive replace it with SDD Thats your good to go

My ssd recommended size is 4982mb and the booked size is 2048. I just checked it and after the calculations it says 7473mb. Should I keep it at 2048 or should I change it to 7473mb?

nope I don't agree, I got a better performance at time 1:39, I chose system manage size, then pressed SET, and apply and restarted pc, I got the same improvement, even on 3 laptops, 1 had window XP, + desktop with win 10,
DO NOT do this if your computer uses a lot of virtual memory and the recomended is much lower than that bc it will crash ur computer. (i almost lost mine doing it but i thankfully got to change it back).

Your computer is really fast, you have Windows 10 and only 2GB of RAM. And window 10 requires 4GB to work?
just did this let’s see if it actually works i run apex at 200 fps but sometimes it randomly crashes for memory issues my pc was set to like no virtual memory and idk why

if your paging file memory is disabled or low it could cause crashing sometimes or even system instability but your pc will read and write things faster
