    I am crying that you DNF'd Every Time I Go on Vacation Someone Dies. I was hoping you would love this as much as I did. Someone does actually die in the book, you just have to keep going and it gets there in the end, it is a set up for a series so I can see why the author has done it that way. 🦈

    Wow I thought that pelican was a statue at first.
    The holiday B roll is amazing!
    I would have thought a romance with fantasy characters should be in fantasy romance genre.

    I'm so glad you were able to go on your trip and enjoy yourself!! I hope you got back home rejuvenated and feeling refreshed.
    As far as genres, genres are all subjective. Back when Harry Potter came out, it was listed as Fantasy or Urban Fantasy. "Urban fantasy" are/were books that take place in our world during current times but have heavy Fantasy elements like magic, witches, werewolves/shifters, vampires, elves, orcs, and many other magical beings. I was reading mostly Urban Fantasy back then. Now I hear people say that Harry Potter is "Portal Fantasy". This is because they go through a portal at the train station or other portals to get into buildings. I had never heard of this genre until recent times.
    Now a lot of the books I read back then, have been reclassified as Paranormal, Occult, or Romantasy. The book "Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness was listed as Urban fantasy when I read it. Now it is listed as Paranormal, Paranormal Romance, and Romance Fantasy. When I think of Paranormal, I think of ghosts and strange sounds in the woods. I don't associate that with a book about a witch with a corporate job in NYC (a book I once read). When I think of Occult, I think of cults, devil worshipping, and strange sounds in the woods. I associate both of those genres with Thrillers and Horror books.
    Genres are all decided on by the publishers, marketing teams, and book sellers. The same book might end up in a different section in a different book seller.
    As far as Romance Fantasy and Fantasy Romance. What I gather (and I could be wrong or have them swapped), is that if the book is about some adventure in a fantasy land and the main plot is about this adventure or the strife of this world, but there also happens to be a romance sub-plot that helps to tell the story, then it is Fantasy Romance. If the book is heavily focused on the Romance and it just so happens to take place in a Fantasy realm, then it is Romance Fantasy. The problem is that some books have a good mix of the two and it is hard to tell which one is which. I think that is why the term Romantasy was establish and it tends to cover both cases.

      Genres and sub genres are always an interesting one to discuss, especially as they do elvove with time 😊

    I dont think it's just you, I find the same thing in my local waterstones, and even in my library, what I would class as romantasy is found in the general fiction section. It's bizarre, lol. Hope you had a great holiday it looked amazing 😮

    🐟🐠🦈 So nice to see the black tipped reef shark the tang the angel and parrot fish! I haven’t been snorkeling since 2011 (Virgin Gorda) but had been diving and snorkeling from 2005 up til then at different islands in the Caribbean. Glad you shared your underwater videos! Speaking of footnotes you will love Turning Darkness into Light. Keep your eye out for it in the secondhand bookshops.

    Omg your trip looked like so much fun. I love snorkeling and sharks. Sharks honestly are one of my favorite animals they’re the puppy dogs of the sea lol. I loved all the underwater clips. I lived by a beach for most of my life so I’ve done a ton of snorkeling over the years. 🦈🦈🦈
    I also get confused sometimes with shelving. I always considered more witchy books more paranormal romance. I feel like it usually just depends on how many fantasy elements are in the world whether it gets shelved with romance/fiction or fantasy. At my bookstores I see half a soul and that series with fantasy and India holton with romance. I think they just shelf it based off what the publisher says is the main genre and I notice that a lot of the more rom-com fantasy-romance get shelved in general fiction/romance sections and more of the like deeper or like more emotional fantasy-romance gets shelved with the fantasy. Idk if that makes sense but that’s kind of how I’ve found it.
    Also always dnf books you’re not enjoying. There’s so many books out there and reading should be fun not a struggle

      The sharks were so fun, something I will always remember.
      Yeah, it's an interesting one to see what everyone's opinions are on where to shelve books/classify them.
      100% reading should always be fun 😊

    To me they would be paranormal romance. Supernatural elements are present but without the fantasy world building.

    🦈 I think if it's heavy on the romance it is put in the romance section. At least in my local Barnes and Nobel. It does get confusing sometimes but in gerneral I think romance is the bigger umbrella for those types of stories, even if it has a supernatural cast. Your holiday looked amazing! I went snorkeling in the Bahamas for my 40th bday. It was terrifying and amazing! I am a poor swimmer who is afraid of deep water, and claustrophobic. So a snorkle mask was not for me. I did it and had a great time otherwise!

    Thank you for this video. Enjoyable, as usual.
    As for genres and categorizing books. For me, I tend to not worry about strict classifications. However, if I must, then for the books you mentioned, and going off what you said in your video because I haven't read them, I would categorize them as fantasy romance, or romantasy, as the sub-genre tends to be called these days when the fantasy story focuses on the romance. For me, the fantasy genre includes books that have elements of magical realism, speculation, alternative reality and the classic-obvious-imaginary worlds.
    Also, if those romance stories you mentioned are set in the "real" world and have "fantastical" elements, they can also be categorized as urban fantasy, or low fantasy as some might call them. So urban fantasy romance, or maybe even urban romantasy, although I haven't heard anyone use that sub-genre designation before.
    That being said, classically speaking, magical realism was the genre that housed fiction that included magical elements/undercurrents set in our known world, while fantasy was the stories that included high fantasy-full fantasy or epic fantasy-of imaginary worlds and creatures.
    I hope I helped you a little, and didn't end up confusing you. 😅😆

      @ReadingNymph  3 дні тому

      Haha I think Urban Romantasy is a good title for it, but as you say not one that's commonly used. I always find the topic of sub genres interesting and how people define them

    • @ramblingperi
      @ramblingperi День тому

      @@ReadingNymph Agreed. I think, if nothing else, it shows what matters the most to the classifier. So, I now dub these types of books Urban Romantasy. 😁
      Incidentally, yesterday, I noticed some bookish friends creating a sub genre that made sense to them. 😄
      Looking forward to your next video.
