It’s so cute seeing Nadia and Bart , total strangers at the time, compete in this competition not knowing they’d fall in love and marry 20 years later ❤️❤️
Wow! Gymnastics has surely come a long way, everything from form to handstand positions to uniforms to execution to difficulty. Truly this is the most amazing sport ever!
It's less about the springs making the floors bouncy and more about how painful and hard the landings must be on what is basically a thin carpet on hard ground
I was there! It was where my dream of training with Bela Karolyi began. That did not happen, but something BETTER happened. As an adult I worked with him as a coach for several summers and was his first female camp director.
If you pay attention, it states that a lot of these routines are pre-taped, all they did was feature the highlights and winning routines, sooooo......it was longer than 25 minutes - dumbass.
In comparing Olga and Nadia, I was really disappointed in the commentators comments about Olga. Very unnecessary and exposed their bias.. Not only is Nadia is a legend, but Olga is too. Olga is awesome! as well as Nadia!
The 1972 Soviet Olympic team changed gymnastics forever. The gyms started filling up in the US. Prior to that it wasn't that big of a sport here. Tourescheva was the real AA champion but Olga got everyone's attention and the US boom in gymnastics began. Nadia came along in 76 and started scoring perfect 10's and the sport boomed even more. That why the US became a powerhouse 20 years later, by sheer volume of talent that was growing in our gyms. We do owe them a nod for that.
i hate how they were comparing olga and nadia just like that. theyre two different people, they have different styles. they cant just call nadia the new olga because she isnt olga.
Nadia didn't land that bar routine "perfectly". And the Americans pronounced her name wrong for around a decade, despite Nadia herself telling them how to pronounce it.
Made me crazy as a gymnast during this time. They treated Olga Korbut like the champion of everything because she caught the attention of the world. She won one gold on beam in 1972 and Ludmilla Tourescheva, her teammate won the all around and won every single gold in the 1975 world championships. I met the team when they came to the US in 1976
I love how gymnastics looked before the spring floor assist. I'm gobsmacked that people comment on the evolution of gymnastics AS IF the gymnasts are more talented today. The apparatus wasn't designed to be so helpful to the gymnast back then - they flew on their own power. Bars was also far more interesting and certainly didn't consist of repeated tricks and non-stop pirouetting on the high bar.
I love showing this to my kids -- showing them what *I* used to do -- this is actually the year I started gym (as did many little girls) -- so fun to watch! Thanks for posting all of these great programs!
They hadn't seen Nelli Kim vault at this point...I love how much they are promoting Nadia and being so critical of Olga...using words like manipulate....I know the US were pro-Romania but didn't realise it was worse than the USSR.
Nadia Comaneci before the Olympics in Montréal! So she was known before... I never saw this broadcast until now (I'm French). Nowadays it is kind of funny to hear the speakers talking about Nadia and Bart Conner in the same time as being the best gymnasts of their generation, for us who know Nadia's and Bart's future! :)
We have to remember at that time we were still in the Cold War and athletes from Eastern Europe were watched by there governments every time they Traveled outside their countries
Catherine H. But it got very difficult for her after the 1980 Olympics and when the Karolys defected during a gymnastics tour in the United States. The Romanian government was scared that Nadia would do the same and hardly authorized her to travel abroad. Her life became so miserable that she decided to flee Romania through Hungary and Austria to Canada and the US in 1989 (just a few months before the revolution and Nicolae Ceaușescu’s overthrow).
Excellent broadcast. Have never seen this before. However, today's competitions blows the charts away compared to this broadcast. It's breath taking to see. I see a lot of similar moves done by our American Women Today in the Elite level. The code of points have changed which I like because they are able to do harder routines.........
The vaulting horse was changed after the disastrous fiasco at the 2000 Sydney Games when the vault was set too low at the Women’s AA and caused many gymnast to crash and fall. It had also caused injuries, paralyzes, and even death to some gymnast in the past such as San Lang and Julia Gomez. The media stopped commenting and posting female gymnast weight on screen after the tragic death of Christy Henrich in 1994 when she died of anorexia bulimia trying to lose weight after a judge told her she was too fat to go the Olympics.
Olga's moves don't have risk involved??? This commentator doesn't know what she is talking about. Of course precision is neccessary with the Korbut loop on high bar otherwise the athlete would end up in a wheelchair. Why is Olga's release move on the high bar banned if there is no risk? It is annoying to hear Kathy go into ecstasy about Nadia
Hi Christian, Nadia's moves are not banned as far as I know, very few perform her salto on bars because it is so dangerous. Don't think her dismount is either. As for Olga you are right. It is banned because not only does it slow down the rhythm but also because it is dangerous. And you are correct in saying they raised the minimum age. I am not so sure if this was a good idea. Would Nadia have got her tens and won if she had competed in her first olympics at 16 or 17? I don't think so as her body started to develop then.
I dont get Rigby praising Nadia's vault so highly. It was actually quite crappy and I have seen it done better many times, even in that era. Her other events were great though.
Hi! Please post full broadcast of the 1977, 1978, and 1979 WAG American Cup. They are of no use to gymnastics fans in a vault. Thanks! P.S. Thanks for all the great videos.
this videos show how much gymnastics has changed and how much harder it’s become. the skills amongst the women in this competition are things that i remember learning when i was like level 7 in elementary school.
It was a difficult part at the time. Very difficult and different training. On the hard Instrument, there was training. Imagine training for 5 years on this floor that is in the film. Necessary support for the trainer during training and sometimes during competitions, during warm-up. Natural selection. American cars at that time were more comfortable than the current cars. . I was in the US in the late '70s, and someone was driving me, Chevrolet and others. Have you ever driven such a Chevrolet or other cars from those years? Today it would not fit into every garage.😂
Looking at this and remembering what I was learning in those years, I always that I did not do much then.... but that is because I compared it with what girls do now! I am glad to have been doing gymnastics in that era as I would not dear to do what female gymnasts do now... LOL.
Interesting to watch how gymnastics has changed... the things they are doing on floor and vault here are the aquivalent of a level 8 gymnast nowadays...
Why is it that the difficulty keeps increasing? Yes it's very impressive to see people do a double layout with a full twist, but this is so fun to watch! It's definitely not as stressful. I'm just wondering how much more difficult can we make gymnastics?
I think there would be a lot of tied scores if they cant increase difficulty. and it'd get boring seeing the same thing over and over, year after year, for decades when they are cappable of more. This is probably refreshing to watch because its different. I do suggest checking out college gynmastics if you havent. Its far more simple and based on execution similar to this video. :)
Holy fuck. No one even comes close to how good Nadia is. Still to this day. This is the first time I ever seen her. I have heard about her for years though I feel like the girls were way better at the uneven bars than they are today. The pummel horse is gnarly btw. Grecu soo gnarly. Ring juice . 😂

Olga was a great gymnast but face it...it is far to much saying about her "as well as Nadia".

Olga is good but Nadia is perfect
Bart kissed Nadia when they received their awards together. Nadia didn't know who he was and described him as a" blonde-haired boy."
They always compared Nadia to Olga and ignored Ludmilla Tourescheva who was the reigning Olympic and world all around champ.
i hate how they were comparing olga and nadia just like that. theyre two different people, they have different styles. they cant just call nadia the new olga because she isnt olga.
And Olga wasn't the Olympic or World Champion AA anyway. She just captured everyone's attention and started the popularity of gymnastics in the US.
Nadia didn't land that bar routine "perfectly". And the Americans pronounced her name wrong for around a decade, despite Nadia herself telling them how to pronounce it.
So what?
Wow. I didn't know uneven bars used to be so close together. I can't imagine that being comfortable to gymnasts now.
Yeah! Imagine swinging too hard and your waist whacking that bar! Ouch! I as a gymnast myself am glad that they are farther apart
I was there. It didn't hurt because you hit where you bend at the hip. It's ten times harder now. The girls today are soooo strong.
Made me crazy as a gymnast during this time. They treated Olga Korbut like the champion of everything because she caught the attention of the world.
