      I go down kerbs backwards if they aren't too high. Pop-ups are all I can manage, being a "long vehicle". Maybe I should get one of those signs for the back of my wheelchair?

    Great video!! Just wanted to add, anyone currently using a passive wheelchair and not an active one, the chair might be a lot heavier and might make it harder to pop, when I had my passive chair the anti tip wheels were always down, now I have my active chair I can pop with one hand. Would also recommend testing falling back completely (obviously onto a soft landing) just to get used it, when this happens try to bring your chin to your chest so you don’t hit your head on the way down!!

      It sounds like it’s not a good idea for me since I’ve got a fixed back passive chair due to a spine injury. I’ve tried doing them but I can’t even get the chair off the ground

      I want to know why it’s hard for me to do a wheelie and I’m a t4 incomplete. And my brother whom is abled bodied can sit in the same chair and do wheelies and hold the wheelie position like it’s so easy? Why is that. I think it has something to do with having trunk muscle control. Am I correct??

    When I first started trying (before seeing this video 🤪) I found I could do pop-ups by putting my hands as far back as I could and shoving them forward fast. Probably like at 9and then ending at 2. They are always reckless and uncontrolled because I’m just throwing myself at them so I’m excited to learn controlled ones to feel safer when I get to bumps. Now I always think “okay, god a bump... alright, well I might die here, here we go!!!!”

    Thanks for taking the time to post these video's. I just wish I'd found these a long while ago, having tipped a passive wheelchair backwards going up a slope in the cinema and landing in hospital for a week with concussion, and then, even more impressively, going up a slope into a shop in the town center, tipping it over backwards, again, onto concrete and giving myself a bleed in the brain. This has supplied some sensible tips, to hopefully get me going in the right direction, especially now I've knocked some sense into me, the hard way.

    I wish this video had existed when I got my custom chair built for me.. I signed off that it was “correct” at the advice of the mobility company (not an OT) because it was my first chair and I didn’t know any better. Now I have a too-wide, ill-fitted chair, with the wheels set too far back to self propel or hold wheelies. I also have fixed handles because I was told adjustable handles don’t exist, but they do!!
    Thank you for making these videos Gem! I hope this can save other people a whole load of trouble.

      I’ve been told that since I have fixed frame foldable chair, they can’t make basically any major modifications at this point, without just starting from scratch and paying out for a whole new chair (which they refused to do). Thankfully I recently switched insurance plans, so I’m hoping I can start the fitting/assessment process from scratch with a more qualified mobility company. The whole process will take years longer than it should have, but hopefully I’ll eventually have a chair that’s right for me. I’m more empowered to self advocate now.

    If you have a helper/spotter they can wrap a scarf around the back bar and hold it upwards, until you can balance for yourself.
    I have really bad eyesight so sometimes I pop up too early or too late, so I often have scabby knees! (...especially when I’m using a smartdrive!).
    I would love to be able to go down an escalator in a wheelie, but I’m definitely not at that stage in confidence yet!

    I don't think my chair is quite tippy enough - it's not that I can't have it more tippy, it's that the weight changes if I ever carry a back pack. To me I think it would be more limiting not to be able to carry a back pack (sometimes fairly heavy, laptop plus stuff) than it is to not be able to do a back balance or a level 3 kerb. To be fair I haven't practiced much so I might be able to do more, but it is a bit of a dilemma, can't be tipping over he moment I pick up a bag.

    • @DanOnWheels
      @DanOnWheels 4 роки тому +1

      It depends on the max height your wheelchair is designed to go over, and if it’s a front, mid or rear wheelchair. I used to use a mid wheel power wheelchair, Invacare Pronto M91, that the max curb it was designed to go over was 3 inches. What I found is it’s very important that your drive wheels hit the curb at the same time (or you get twisted sideways) and with a little momentum (not to fast, but not stopping when they initially hit the curb either). Don’t try to go over at an angle like you might in a car with suspension. Most wheelchairs don’t have suspension and the ones that do the suspension isn’t designed for that. I’ve went over several 3 to 5 inch high speed bumps (which can be tricky if it’s to steep as the Wheelchair may balance on the mid wheels for a second and then you land on the front wheels when coming down) and up several level 1 (from the video) curbs. Level 2 curbs are a lot more tricky, but depending on your wheelchairs capability are doable. Most power wheelchairs can’t do level 3 curbs as it’s beyond the wheelchairs limitations. I’m much happier in my manual wheelchair, but I had get get specific features to be able to use a manual wheelchair.

    If you go down a steep slope, you can lean forward (those of you who can) so that the weight is over the front wheels, which should help prevent caster wobble.
    When I was at school (1980s) there used to be a Wheelchair Proficiency Scheme, with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. I had to stop at Silver because I couldn't do a proper wheelie - through no fault of my own. So, even schemes for Disabled people can mean you are discriminated-against. 🤦

    I can do anything except rolling down a hill while in the wheelie position but I´d love to learn it someday. I am also visual impaired so I´ ll get sometimes scared of high curbs as I can´t figure the actual high. :) Anyway, keep up ur great content. Watching you is always so much fun! 3:38 Oh I can do this without a wheelie. It's not that bad just be slow and careful.
