Why would the gold scrap at £900 but be estimated less , surely it would be estimated more than scrap value !

I think they have to pay commission to the auction house.

And for that matter, why would anyone sell less than scrap?

It’s completely wrong that sovereigns have a set price, for modern bullion that’s truer but for older sovereigns there is numismatic value associated with them especially Victoria youngheads and shields. Also mintage, condition and rarity all impact on value. Never sell a sovereign for bullion price without checking the numismatic market first and understand what you have.

I sold fruit in a Market for 50 years and I worked on 10% selling perishable goods and made a living, these dealers want 10% profit on gold and they irritate me even further moaning what if the price goes down, they are buying on that day so what way the price of gold next day has nothing to do with the deal , what if the price goes up will they look for the seller and give them more money.
