What I love about this solo is how it's not technique that makes it work (though he has technique to burn), but just the ideas, the shape, the flow. And that's something any of us drummers can do better. The temptation as a drummer is to impress with speed, volume, and bombast--to be as tricky as possible. And yes, those things can impress. But they don't mean anything. That's just athletics. This is music, and it's nice to be reminded that drums can make music if we think about it the right way.
This is not just athletics. Too reducing and too easy to think like that. You can play fast and DEEP like Coltrane or Ronald Bruner jr... Business to follow.
Seriously, this is one of the best drum solos I've ever heard or seen. Great to have it available here in such good quality. Baron has such a great command of touch (buzzes, doubles, mutes etc.) and his tuning is also so unique and so cool. Love that flappy front head on the bass drum. Never mind the awesome motivic development on display here. Simply killer.
Joey Baron is mostly a jazz guy going from straight ahead jazz to post bop and avant garde stuff. What's weird is, I read once that he cites early comedians like Chaplin and Keaton as major influences. A lot of his inventive timing comes from a carbonated sense of humor.
I keep coming back to this solo, and it kills me every time!! Damn!! This is an absolutely perfect solo, anything you could ever want is in here!! I dont see how it could get much better than this!!!
amazing solo. please post the full vid. joey has been my fave drummer since i heard naked city 'torture garden' in 91. when i used to say he was my fave drummer, other drummers (who's faves were the usual big names) used to go "who?!". it's great to see him finally getting the attention/recognition he deserves. he made the cover of modern drummer a few years ago, etc. check out the other great vids of joey, esp with masada.
Incredible Solo!! So musical!! This is one of the most artistic Drum Solos that I have ever heard!! What a player!! If I could play a solo half this good, once in my life,I could die a happy man!!
this is pretty much all i ever wanna hear come out of a drum kit. really...this is incredible. i wanna dance african mooves and shake my hips. this is rhythm.
good comment. In fact I came to this video after watching Dennis Chambers talking about how much he liked this guy.Reminds me of Steve Gadd. For the record,my favourite drummer is Ronnie Tutt.
Some people are always quick to judge. The difference between those people and Joey is that he's created this piece of music and he's a committed musician that has also created his own sound, that's why he's constantly working. The ones that criticize don't have non of these attributes.
a friend of mine posted this to his fb page, and i was "who's joey baron ?" boy did i find out !!! this is probably my most favorite drum solo of all time !
@RiverKanoff Joey Baron keeps his kick loose for a really good reason. He plays it the way an orchestral percussionist does, using the beater to choke or muffle the drum when he wants to and leaving it open when he wants that big sound. I've worked with this bass drum technique quite a bit over the years. It's super difficult at first but turns out to be great fun and very colorful once you get the hang of it.
I hate when I see these metalcore fans saying like "Avenged Sevenfold had a better drummer than that", they don't understand a shit about drums, don't know what is a good grip, and technique... JOEY BARON IS GOD
:) Wow... Me happy... What i like most is that there's no sound compressor, limiter or smt that compromises the acoustic reality of acoustic drums... and some1 will tell that e-drums are better ... no way! thx for the video.
Hey there, I can't say exactly, but his toms and snare are tunes very open in the mid to high range. On the toms, it sounds like his top heads are tuned just slightly lower than the bottom ones. The bass drum sounds totally open with no internal damping. It is not tuned up like a bebop bass drum and it sounds to me like the resonance head is tuned quite low. YMMV.
Know what you mean with the bass drum but still, even though it's not my sound (and not yours either), it works perfectly for Joey. It sounds like a thunderous slap and it contrasts wonderfully with his otherwise high tuning.
amen to the last comment. some sad evidence below of the lack of class in our public discourse these days and a sign of some very young minds comparing Joey Baron to Chambers and Weckl. All great players but as different in their musical paths as night and day. And I'll bet every player mentioned in the comments appreciates Baron's deep musicality. He's a great musician, not because of how fast or complicated he can play, but because of the beauty in his playing. My two cents anyway
THE BEST...music music music!!

The definition of pure joy and inspiration!! Wow!
Joey has one of the most beautiful voices when it comes to the language of the drums

I'm not as technically talented, but my brain definitely works the same way his does. This is every bit lyrics and melody as it is drumming.
This video always makes me smile! Viva Joey Baron!

brilliant. There's fire in there....
This drum solo told a story. The same cannot be said for most solos today
an outstanding maestro
The ability to control a kick drum with that much resonance is a seriously underrated skill.
@RiverKanoff Joey Baron keeps his kick loose for a really good reason. What a lyrical drumming style. I like.
The drummer's song.Great!!
Pure Greatness!!.
PD: I Love Poland. Hardest places to google though.
Damn straight, who needs an elaborate drumkit with 50 toms and cymbals, when you're Joey Baron and kick butt on anything!

This is so tasty..., and what a sound..., my god.
What for a Kindom!
even dennis chambers has said that joey baron makes him want to go home and think about taking up another profession

The Late Ed Thigpen would have enjoyed hearing Joey Baron play this solo. I did.
