    Nice work Adam. Having the flexibility to do a project you're interested in makes it much more enjoyable. There are countless ways to approach machining a part. Lapping the back of the parted off ring was a neat way to finish the part.
    It's always funny to read the comments on why you chose to do things X or Y way, when there is no wrong way in YOUR shop. You have demonstrated mastery as a Machinist and the willingness to embrace new methodology countless times. I'm excited to see what's next. Cheers my friend

      I second that! What's the point of having a chef if you're going to tell them how to cook everything and that they're doing it all wrong; the chef would be out the door saying I can't work under these conditions! Your dedication and generous spirit are admirable and fun to watch and I even learn stuff, sometimes nothing to do with machining...
      Having worked as a casting technician/jeweler I do relate to the things you do though and the ways you do them. I was very happy to see the 600 wet and dry paper come out to finish off the parted side, it's what a jeweler might have done (before buffing it to a mirror finish) :) All the best Abomb.

    Nobody who hasn’t done it can appreciate the experience and reflexes it takes to single point thread at 620 rpm. A very small fraction of a second later with the half nuts and stuff breaks.

      I have cut 11 1/2 threads and 2 1/2, the only company use 11 1/2 threads are power Co. And cable Co, Telephone Co. They use them on wooden poles only. 2 1/2 are used by Fire Department.

    Few things make me more satisfied than watching you craft these small gems. These may be insignificant parts, but the care you put into making them function as close-to-perfect items, teaches us a lesson about what matters in life : Things are only as goos as we're willing to make them. Thank you for sharing your immense skills and soothing demeanour. Your modesty belies the depth of a true master.

    It still amazes me how the machine catches the thread perfectly every time. I just can't make sense of it in my head.

    • @PeregrineBF
      @PeregrineBF Рік тому +3

      The rotation rate of the lead screw (which drives the position of the carriage which in turn holds the threading insert) is synchronized to the rotation of the spindle through the change gears (and/or gearbox) & the half nut. When the half nut is engaged at the correct position, the gearing ensures that the insert always lines up with the threads.
      It definitely helps to see a manual lathe & examine it in person. Move the spindle by hand, see how the carriage moves, etc. Figuring out how the half nut can engage in more than one position is particularly important for understanding!

    I'm surprised the retaining nut was made from aluminium Adam. Would have thought it was originally made from a more durable material. I think I would have faced off the cast iron part after cutting the thread, as a reference surface for any future work. That said some fantastic machining Adam. Incredible attention to detail as usual. Love your videos. Cheers Nobby

    Hello Mr. Adam, my name is Roberto from Portugal, I'm a silent spectator normally and I follow your videos since the first episode, I enjoy working and listing to your experience and expertise in metalworking, and I gotta say you're still the best machinist I see online, but I never heard you say, "This is the most difficult and challenging job I ever work" so I gotta ask what was it if you had one? For years always said everything in your hands seems so easy. Good job 👏

      I don't know what Adam would say but I'm gonna bet it would be something along the lines of: Repairing something someone else had made serious mistakes with already.
      As an automotive technician of over 30 years, the difficult/complicated things to work on eventually became routine but the bad days or, headache-jobs were always the vehicles in my bay that someone else had "fixed". :))

      I would say you are spot on Mr. Mark, I'm an active Navy Sargent for the last 23 years, my specialty is naval construction electrician or tactical technician ( more fancy name) and my job is to repair what others unrepair or broken. I know what you min by that statement. And yes I agreed that's the answer Mr. Adam would say.
