DTM new 2.0L Turbo vs old V8 Sound comparison

- During the 2019 DTM meeting at circuit zolder, i was able to record the old v8 engine sound and the new 2 litre 4 cylinder turbo engine sound.
Same track, Same camera, Same corner.
The old Audi RS5 and BMW M3 drove some laps during the camera drives.
You can also see and hear the Aston martin Vantage, Audi RS5 and BMW M3 Turbo from this year.
I was never a big fan of the N/A V8 DTM sound, so for me the Turbo sounds a lot better.
The V8 is a bit louder but not as much as you might think!
Love the turbo flutter while the aston martin was exiting the pitlane.
2 liter engine sounds surprisingly not bad
A racecar will never sound bad. It's exhaust system will always do the trick.
2 liter V12. Lol
Yeah, exactly! I saw the video's title and immediately thought that was another of that videos that shows how good was the old times... but I happy to be wrong... 2.0 sounds very good
@@RGV2300 except by formula e hahaha
2.0L sounds like it’s taking a shit every time the anti lag kicks in but aside from that it sounds good
If DTM can get this sound out of a 4 cyl. Surely F1 can improve their V6 engines...
MGU-H makes all the difference.
"If DTM can get this sound out of a 4 cyl." Bcuz yout think that sound good ? Its sound like what it is: a shitty 2000 cc 4 cylinders engine . Even worse, it's a turbo. Damn NA engines with huge displacement sound so great .
These engines come from Super GT cars . GT500.
@@mr_exia Chill the fuck out dude, these are two different opinions, nothing more, certainly not facts.
mr Exia how are you going to talk shit about 4 cylinders with a gti as your picture.
Have to admit the V8's really didn't even sound like a V8
Yea the smaller displacement takes away the deep natural growl a little. Add the exhaust that the series uses and they were certainly very high pitched.
Honestly I'd say DTM has their exhaust package on point. You can hear such similarities between the two engines in this comparison.
@@imakeumadLOL the V8 doesn't sound that way because of its displacement, it sounds that way because it has a flat plane crankshaft. It fires evenly across both cylinder banks, so it doesn't have the "burble" most V8 engines do.
@@b.c.2281 Yeah but Ferrari V8's sound awesome and they're relativey low displacement and have a flat plane crank, while these dtm V8's (at least in video) sound like straight piped inline 4's
@@amac_ that's due to exhaust design alone. DTM cars don't have a crossover (like an x-pipe, h-pipe, or complicated crossover headers) that even impulses and create different resonances at higher rpms. If you'd like a good illustration the effect exhaust design has on sound, there's a UA-camr by the name of Nick Kautz that has a number of videos with different exhaust designs on his 5.0 swapped E36 BMW. Listen to his video of the 180 degree header exhaust system (this equalizes exhaust pulses and creates a flat-plane like sound) with no crossovers vs with. It's not a perfect example because it's a crossplane V8, but the effect is very noticeable.
@@b.c.2281 yeah yeah I know it's the exhaust design, I was just trying to say the 4.0 v8 don't sound bad because they have a flat plane crank or they're low displacement, but maybe I didn't explain my point correctly in my comment. Btw thanks for suggesting me the video.
"what types of aston martin that you drive?"
Me: "a 2.0 turbo aston"
Honda civic of astons
Wish we could have a street legal version of it, with a similar aero kit
LipColt for what reasons ?
It’s not like they are gonna charge same as a Honda type R for an Aston and people who spend that much money on cars would like something that they already sell...
so yeah you not getting street version of it ...
These words sounds worse than that aston
a 500000€ aston martin
The 4 cyl turbo sounds surprisingly good
Not that bad compared to the Naturally aspirated f1 engines vs today turbo.
What really kills the F1 engine noise, is the MGU-H unit that attaches to the turbo to recover energy, because of that, the F1 engine almost never opens the wastegate, so the exhaust is always very muffled.
@@ThalisUmobi I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing that bit of info!
@@ThalisUmobi and 14k revs vs 21k
Jounaas I think they are limited to 15k, however rarely see over 12.5k because of the fuel flow limit.
Good old times when f1 still had NA V10´s...
Still Sounds better than F1
He Wang Seems you never been to f1
Christian Hegener sounds better than v6 hybrid turbocharged, nothing can compete with f1’s v10 atmo
Christian Hegener ne aber von dem was ich so auf UA-cam sehe kann da der 1.6l v6 nicht mithalten. Außerdem ist das „rattern“ beim gaswegnehmen absolut geil
@@Dxs91 He is saying that those 4 cylinders sounds better than an F1 V6 and thats not true
Pablo G 1.6 v6 sounds weird bro, in MY opinion
No one:
2L engine:PRARARARARARARARARARAPAPAPAPRARARARAPAPAPA
Days of hearing perfect downshifts before a turn are no more.
2019 and I just realized Aston is in DTM???! I must be living under a rock!
yep, and they left again...
@@heiko207 they did?!
Edit: they did! In January 2020!
Atleast it's not electric 🤷♂️
Unfortunately it probay will be in less than 10 years :(
That whine is so hateful. Gives me a headache. I keep trying to watch FE like every race but never manage more then 10 minutes.
@@kyleslater5245 mute the tv and play a f1 v12 sounds video :D
@@stevebuscemi3622 No it won't, at least surely not "in lEsS tHaN 10 YeArS"...
The electric DTM (which still exists solely in theory, only a vision) will firstly be the petrol DTM's support series, but this alone is many years away, so chill out.
Kyle Slater treat it like its a supercharger whinning.
A 2.0 turbo Aston 😂
Mercedes powerd.
I can only hear the popping of the aston's traction control
gioacchino that’s probably the wastegate or blowoff valve. Not traction control
@@guidolavespa303 man how is possible that you heard something that doesnt exist? What kind of ear do you have?
DTM car has no TC no ABS
What it sounds is antilag system "bangbang"
Stupidest thing ever made! No road going Aston Martin is 4 cylinder
Beautiful sounds, both of them. Unlike most, who love the burbling sound of the crossplane V8, I think the best V8's sound like a very angry straight four.
Comparably Small displacement, flat-plane, no turbo. Sounds awesome!
To me the v8 sounds better when doing speed but the 2.0 sounds better when gearing down and braking
Can’t lie, the 2.0 sounds pretty great.
They all sound like 4 cylinders ngl
My 6 year old self: Imagine the cool new cars we‘re gonna have in the future!
The cars:
The V8s did not sound like a V8 but the sound was more 'dramatic' than the humming little turbos.
i miss the old days whit the V8 LIVE at Norisring, Hockenheimring, Lausitzring and Nürburgring.
The new cars sound like proper racing cars honestly, kinda remind me of group a rally car sounds with all the pops and bangs
The antilag on those 2.0 turbos sounds insane. Especially on the Aston
They kinda sound like WRC cars honestly, and that is a GOOD thing!
2.0 liter have a nice sound! Congratulations!
Those v8’s sound amazing
I was at Zandvoort the last time DTM raced there and the V8's sounded amazing. The different manufacturers all had a unique sound. The 2.0 Turbo sounds very cool as well. Hope DTM won't die out and more manufacturers will join.
Well this aged pretty horribly lol
@@TomsCastrolSupra glad Japanese Super GT is still a thing
Can’t beat a nice rasping sound of the 4.0l v8
Will miss the V8, but the 4cil still sounds decent.
That off throttle anti lag on the 2.0L’s 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Turbo doesn't sound that bad actually. I love that turbo wastegate sounds
DTM old sounded great
DTM new not bad sounded pretty good
F1 old sounded unreal
F1 new pants
Well done DTM 👏 for not losing the noise.
When I heard 2 liters: Is that coming an Evo? lol
Oh man that flatplane V8 sounded a lot better, but a 2.0 Turbo suits the character of DTM a lot more. They should also require a stock chassis and less aero in my opinion. Make the race car actually resemble a stock production car, like in the old days.
80's DTM sounds much better
Y'all remember way back in 2010-2013 some of the Mercs had a high pitched exhaust sounds akin to the ones you'd find in older Ferrari V8s? It was only a few cars on the grid that had that higher pitched (think an octave up) sound.
In 2010 i visited DTM Hockenheim. The cars sounded like GP2 cars back than.
@@racingreporteurope Yeah, you had the more 4-cylinder sounding V8s but then the occasional Mercedes or even Audi with that high pitched, F1-like sound, wonder if they used different headers or something because it was a distinct note from the rest of the cars.
Why I love my ej205 20x swapped wrx 10:1 compression and turbo noises
That is something in turbo small engines that I can't get enough
BROOO...those ALS’s were going bananas man!!😀😀
I love how the drivers make the mistake of turning in early with the new engine, they forget that its less front heavy than the old v8s
I was expecting to hear a bunch of lawnmowers when it got to the 2.0T but honestly they sound pretty good
Are those v8 crosplane engines with some Fancy exhaust systems? They sound nothing like American or Italian v8
jianxuan cao The LMP2 Gibson v8s do that too. Looks crazy at night.
You're right they should used the Judd V8
American V8s tend to be crossplane and European V8s tend to be flatplane.
These V8 engines are flatplane, the reason it sounds like neither is because the exhaust has no crossovers (X pipes, h pipes, etc) which make it sound more like a 4 cylinder engine.
@@AkinaGhost well modern V6 F1 cars uses Y pipes that's why modern V6 F1 sounds sucks
sound nearly the same but now with spooly noises!
Boost noises sound so GOOOOD
The 2.0 Turbo's sound like my car. 😂 No back boxes, all the sound!
V8 is Brutal sound!!! I ‘d like the sound of V8 !!!!!
For me the 4.0 V8 is still the better one. Remembering how even the seats vibrated as they passed because of that massive sound.... so much fun that can‘t be reached by the 2.0‘s
In stead of downstepping from a v8 to a straight 4cilinder they should go to a v12 😍 now that would be a sound
This switch to 4 bangers is not about concerns for the environment but how much efficiency they've achieved over time.
The exhaust sound of the 2-liter engine is better than I thought.
that sounds like when you are trying to squize a fart
They sound fucking sick with the anti lag under decel
Not gonna lie I kind of dig the wooshes and pops. Than again those V8’s sounded like an uncorked VQ
Surprised to see that the old V8 sounds like a shitty tuba. Reminds me of a fartier flatplane, Civic-sounding F430. The 2.0 sounds so smooth, that even if I don't like it, I prefer it instead of the V8. Sad, really sad.
Wow anti lag on these cars is really strong
Eargasm... 👂 🤤 🚗
Not gonna lie, really impressed with the 2.0 turbo
My ideal supercar engine is a 4 liter over 9000 rpm twin-turbo Honda F20C derived FPC V8 with turbo whistle, anti-lag, and a high overtone similar to the Ferrari F458 Italia.
4.0 V8 IS BRRRRPAUPAU RRRRR 😍 and 2.0 is ssss😂😂😂😂
Love the V8 growl. Sounds like a racing car should.
This V8 sounds like '96 Honda Civic with shity exhaust and K&N intake :D
Yeah sounds liek stainless or TI pipes without a resonator designed for minimum weight and less fucks about downstream aside from headers/collectors. Sad.
Turbo sounds can make anything x2000 times better
Sounds very similar to me, I would imagine that those v8s were flat plane anyway, so no real difference
The Sound of the v8 mercedes which is not in this Video is mind blowing
When a V8 sound like a civic.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 true
Lmfao, not even close, civic sounds like a fart can, 4.0 V8 sound like, well 4.0 V8
@@Rick-bm5uq yes its caricature..
But i think V8 have a better music then they sound like this:

There’s not a big difference to be honest. But the 4 Zylinder turbos where beasts 👹👌🏼!!!
So aggressive on the throttle…
I was expecting the 2.0s to sound like vacuum cleaners. Its great that they've managed to retain the spirit of DTM with the smaller motors.
01:31 I made the same sounds in the morning on the thrown.
I make 01:38 a more severe sound
What in hell you guys eat? FFs😂😂
V8's is like a monster.
2.0L Turbo is like a popcorn machine.
The 2.0 doesn’t sound bad, but it sounds closer to a wrc engine... or a wtcc engine. Which is basically ... the same, as far as i know. (Wtcc and wrc).
New honda engine boii😂😂
GP2 engine
Dudes I want that damn V8 back
Well the old school are just classic and the m6 gtlm are just legend
Breh the 4L V8s sound like 2L i4s XD
So I’m not even mad on downsizing here because they don’t really sound that different. It’s actually quite cool because the cars seem faster or at least have more downforce with these huge wings
Other than the burbles (which sound epic) the engine noises remind me of the super 2000 BTCC cars of the 90s (which is also epic)
2.0 sounds pre nice honestly, got some good turbo noises in there for sure
New DTM saounds is not really DTM sounds..
It's pure WRC sounds. :) :) :) :)
Has to be the first time, for me, a turbo engie sounds better than a natural one
Those four pots sounds amazing
Raspy as hell!
V8 sounds better by far. Sad its been replaced by a 4 banger. but atleast the v8s will be available to buy for a lot cheaper now.
I prefer the turbo version because it still has that dark, growling sound together with the turbo hissing.
I wish my 2.0 TDI focus had that sound.
As a rally fan I love a 2.0 turbo
2.0 Turbo Sounds so much better, big surprise
Why an Aston
Isn't DTM German only???
Honda and Lexus also take part
And I think they changed it so other countries can take part
Same goes to JGTC. It should be Japanese-only race but others like Dodge, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Mosler take part too.
DTM means Deutsche touren Meisterschaft so Im also kind confused
Roli blue Maybe it means its located in Germany, not german exclusive brands. I dont know. Hope someone help us solve this.
Here in the USA we like big normally aspirated V8's (6.0L+). They're fuel for the sole.
Those are V8's, they sound like an old rice Honda Civic. So I'll take none of these and stick with the V8 Supercars
speedy blue they’re different types of V8’s
and then there is new c8.r with it's mighty noise
DTM with 2l turbo?! Its over...
the sound of a Aston Martin 2.0 L sound like a Mig-29 guns firing at close distance.
if only races were won on sound ---- good job its about speed
That turbo sounds angry as fuck. I like it.
Meh sounds like a vtec
To the untrained ear, any loud 4banger sounds like VTEC
That crackle sounds like distant gunfire 😲
I'll take the 2.0 over electric any day...
Love the antilag
They both sound like fart cans.
Very frustrating for me to see these cars go away in DTM. They are more inspiring than all the GT3 series
Gt3 needs more power and downforce...fuck it lmp style cockpits and drs for some series
thanks to you all for watching, liking and subscribing! 450.000 views this week only!
That's some aggressive anti lag
Turbo for gays
GRETA gays
I remember when they used 2.5 liter engines that did 12000 rpm like the Opel Calibra.
