This song samples Bach's "Air on the G string", and its music video was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's "The garden of earthly delights". The MV has several references to it. There are also references to other famous paintings in this MV: "The swing" by Fragonard, "Ophelia" by John Everett Millais, "Nimphs finding the head of Orpheus" by Waterhouse, "Lady looking behind the walls" (or "The spy") by Paul Dominique Philippoteaux, "Gather ye rosebuds while ye May" by Waterhouse, "Woman with a parasol" by Claude Monet, "The birth of Venus" by Botticelli. The strawberries both in the MV and "The garden of earthly delights" symbolize temptation, the fall and sin, illusory and transient earthly delights.

Many kpop groups sample classical music in their songs but no one does it better than Red Velvet 😍
They used Johann Bach's Air on the G String as the sample and released this MV on Bach's bday March 21! Detailsss
Half of the MV is based on Hieronymus Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights and other half of the MV has other art references For example :
    Ophelia - John Everett Milley
    The Swing - Fragonard
The Woman Holding the Umbrella - Monet etc.
I like how you try to understand the video and pay attention ♥️♥️

This video is art literally, they use The classical music sample was Sebastian Bach's "Air on the G String", paintings by Claude Monet, John Everett Millais, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Hieronymus Bosch (is the base of the mv). This concept is so elegant and classy.

I'm soooo happy you're reacting to this artistic masterpiece, and yes - I was so confused on first watch even catching several of the art references, I was missing the major key to unlock it all (even though I knew the piece, it had been a while since I looked at it - I looked at it a LOT growing up as odd as that may seem hahaha) - the Hieronymus Bosch triptych - and once I saw someone mention that I was like :O *brain exploding* TBH I was already sold on everything, being EXTREMELY skeptical when the song started because I tend to be very wary of classical samples in pop music in general, it can be SO BAD - no. They did the most brilliant integration of a classical piece I've ever heard, throughout the entire song, and then made an MV with all of the COOLEST art references I've ever seen... yeah. It's ICONIC. If you dig more into the meaning of strawberries in the Bosch then you can go down a lot of rabbitholes, but you know - it's like, how far do you want to go? But it IS nice - but also you did mention playing with scale and if you get into some Red Velvet lore eventually, there are a lot of themes about size manipulation.
Also the end of the MV is a teaser/hint for Seulgi's solo debut which happened later in the same year :D 28 Reasons and the album is SOOOOO good.
I'm often very much like Kerry, head empty - just enjoying everything hahahaha I think it's a great way to approach Red Velvet in general, with no expectations and just accepting everything as it comes.... because you never know what will come and there is likely going to be some absurdity.
But also I highlyhighly throw my support behind all comments suggesting you watch the performance version as well because it is SO beautiful and it lets you experience the song in a new way, with just their pure visuals in the most gorgeous and elegant setting and their beautiful voices. Also their recording behind content is always amazing, and there is one for this - you will be completely amazed.

Thank you so much for this. I think you're right about how they integrated the classical music. It could have gone so wrong but it fit so well! Approaching Red Velvet songs with either an open or closed mind will lead to that mind being blown... there's no escaping it

  • @Panorama-memory

We also recommend this performance video of the song. Red velvet is ambivalent. Does it remind you of anything that's bizarre but so cute, like Timberlake's "The Nightmare Before Christmas"? That kind of thing. Red and velvet are also ambivalent in nature. They can take on different forms and fuse them together. If I had to define Red Velvet in one word, it would be fusion, fusion.
It's because the members of Red Velvet are so good that they can do it all.
Red Velvet can do all sorts of weird and bizarre things and it's still cute, and that's what makes them special.

Their whole schtick the entire time they have been together, including pre-debut days, has always been 'experimental'.
Red Velvet is the most experimental K-Pop Girl Group, hands-down.
IF there is a K-Pop Boy Group that is so experimental, I don't know which group it would be.

The MV features some art piece known in Europe before modern time, I guess the connection to the music is simply, the music samples a piece in Europe before modern time (classical piece)

This song dropped on the Spring Equinox, and it's partially about this coven of witches celebrating and mourning the winter passing into spring, some of the girls characters welcome it, and some long for winter to remain.

The majority of the MV is based on the Garden of Earthly Delights painful painting by Bosch, but there's a ton of other references of famous art pieces as well. :) And the key of the song was actually done in Baroque Tuning, not the original key of the song, which is super fun.
Also the strawberry vs the ice and all that is the battle between seasons. The summer queen and winter coming and things dying and etc.
The very end shot is a reference to Seulgi's solo, 28 Reasons

The strawberries used in this video is originated from Bosch's works. It is not easy to define what he wanted to describe with them. One hint is: the strawberries means human desires.

I feel like a guide is a good way to get to know the members a little bit, but what you're doing is also a more "organic" non-railroaded way of discovering Red Velvet. It's good also to watch the MVs in release order to kind of see their growth, the difference in concepts and the way their sound evolves (and how many years ahead of the game they were/are). I think it's okay either way if you want to watch a guide or not (you will eventually haha), you could also watch some fan made videos that compile their personalities in a more "digestable" way than a guide would

When you are ready to do a guide for Red Velvet there are alot of them, mainly due to long career and new ones often being made after each time they came back with new songs. Most recent one that I've seen (post chill kill) that has had afew reactions to it is ua-cam.com/video/ibtI77njDoU/v-deo.html
Honestly most of the guides are atleast decent, new ones just usually have more update info on certain aspects.

Hahaha it's super hilarious to watch your reactions and try to understand RV's videos. I don't know if someone tells you that the MV concepts are mostly girls're telling fantasy stories. In this case, it's about "The Garden of Earthly Delights" and other paintings...so it's just girls fantasy.

Lol whats with all the talk about murdering. They have only murdered people in 2 song (definitively). Poisoning people with treats is more their forte. My interpretation of this song is their inviting your ears on a musical journey. The beat is trap. The backing is playing classical. They haave dubstep transition. Their voices are kind of bluesy. Its supposed to be this unexpected musical journey (using your imagination of course) and no murdering. But suelgi might beat you up in her solo. 😅
