This is amazing! Your channel is really one of a kind! You and Lorri Torrini had such a big influence on me while preparing for my first snake (6 months old Tarahumara Mountain Boa). I picked her up from the breeder a few days ago. To be able to witness all those natural behaviors you and Lori talk about is incredible. Especially because she has bin living in a rack with next to no enrichment so far. Seeing her instantly use all the spots and spaces I carefully created for her is so rewarding. It makes me proud of all the thought and work that went into planning and creating this enclosure. I'm extremely thankful to you and Lori for completely bulldozing many of my beliefs about reptile keeping and opening my eyes to completely new possibilities! Thank you =)

I had a similar event recently where I set up a load of cork and placed a cork tube with a hole in the side facing upwards under the uv. I thought it would be cool if Monty used the shafts if uv coming through the hole to bask whilst hidden. He did it straight away! Makes you feel like wow I’m actually internationally doing things that are really subtle that most people don’t consider. And then like you say it makes you feel proud. Rock basking spots is such a good suggestion! I bought my beardie a rough slab of sandstone from Home Depot when I upgraded his enclosure and he LOVED it! He took one blep (I'd washed it thoroughly of course) and immediately sprawled his whole body across it like I'd only ever seen him do with very soft fabric. Even when he wasn't basking, he'd scoot over to rest his head on the stone like a pillow ❤ He'd been raised on sand and a rough rope hammock before I took him in, and it was so rewarding to offer him different textures and see his reactions. The slab was a couple inches thick, so it could take a while to reach optimal temperature, so I put a normal electric heating pad for humans under it and turned it on at night to keep it from cooling off too much and that did the trick really well.
This channel is great. very informative, and spot on. Another tip, snakes love tubes for hides.. I use PVC plumbing pipes of different lengths and diameters for each of my snakes.. I try to use black or blue,, they tend to shy away from the white.. Yes, try to stay away from reptile branded products, the cost is outrageous, and when I began keeping snakes in the 70s, there was little information on the subject, and surely no products were available.. Mine was kept in modified military foot lockers, and homemade screen top aquariums. Food was scarce and had to be forged for, and in some cases, the diet of the species was not even known.. We sure have come a long way in the hobby, and thankfully to channels like this and others, valuable information is just a click away.. Thank you guys..
I am loving my solarmeter! I am using a old 12% for my anoles. Moved a T5 inside a zen as enough uvb on a new bulb wasn't hitting the numbers needed, they are perfect now. I'm also combining a dhp with a halogen over hard surfaces and dim as needed per ac or heat.
Wonderful video. When I had house rabbits I fed them a wild diet doing the same thing you do with beardies. It worked great and depending on the time of year,they got way more of a variety than any pet shop could offer. Also alleviated food boredom. And yes,you are right,no one ever buys pothos twice.😄
I really wish you could make an indebth Coastal Carpet Python setup and care video. From substrate, light types etc. On nerd level type. Im a proud nerd but always eager to learn and I cannot find a truly indebth and believable video on them. I am rather new to the hobby but I'm shocked of the amount of diverse, and often false, information on youtube. There are of course some more believable stuff on the web but it's more rewarding watching a video from soneone who is truly an expert and shares the same thoughts of keeping than me.

Regarding the heat bulbs, would three 20 watt bulbs not use a similar amount of energy as a 100 watt, assuming they’re all been run through a dimmer stat? Biology and chemistry I was ok at… physics was definitely my weak point 😂
Well, that really hard to calculate but I think there’s a period where the hundred watt runs at full power until it gets dimmed, same with the 60w cluster but if they achieve similar temps there’s 40 w saved there. Alternatively If you aren’t bothered by cost and you want the same temps but want the bulb to constantly be on so there’s always infrared available then one or two struggling to hit temps and therefore always on may be preferable. I’m enjoying playing around with them. I had no understanding of physics until like a year ago when I started learning for reptiles hardcore, so I’m not an expert either. I’m actually trying to get discounts with a business that sells Dubia starter colonies so keep an eye peeled
I'm actually planning to set up two identical vivs for my Kenyan Zebra Skinks and I'm going to try both. I'm currently using a 100w on a dimming stat and I'm going to use as many 20w lamps as it take to cover the basking area. Same room, same fixtures, everything the same except the lamps. I have the same doubts. One 100w running low due to the stat may prove cheaper than a couple of 20w lamps running flat out (or close to it). I'll be sure to find out. I should caveat that by saying that I have only ever used the higher wattage lamps, so I don't have experience of the 20w yet.
I have used the same bulbs as you in exo terra nano domes for a small euro style viv and some smaller exo terra but gas quite a few pop immediately. More recently I’ve been using very cheap gu10 halogens with adaptors to change them to E27 fittings in more standard sized domes in some larger exo terras. My latest builds are going to be housing multiple occupants, so probably going to use a number smaller bulbs spread out to create a number of basking spots assuming I can achieve a vertical temperature gradient.
Many of the tips sadly are not applikable to me as I only have my one snake any my gf has a turtle and there won't be more reptiles for a while. A lot of the stuff I already had implemented like heating/UV off in summer and winter and having timers and dimmers, buying earth from a gardening store and diversifying the food [frog legs, mice, egg, soon also chicken hearts]. What I most certainly will do, is downsizing my snakes UV-lamp. I def. went overboard with that one . So thank you for that pointer!!! Concerning 39. only feed when hungry... well my hoggy didn't get that memo. She is cruising around for food, loitering and hovering in a strike position close to her "pond" and still not eating the defrosted mice. I now had toss two animals. I'm afraid since she got the pond she is now in frog mode.
Hey Liam! Which rock do you use for it to be able to retain heat for that long after lights out? I’ve got a large slate tile for one basking spot, and a small piece of slate for another, and neither of them retain heat after the lights go off. Perhaps the thickness of the stone plays a role?
I so agree with breeding your own feeders. My anole tank has always been the feeder and isopod colony( yes the dragons ate them too). And this time enough bsfl popped and bred as well. I have beetles/mealworms and isopods in my bearded dragon tank. Both girls are almost 3 years old, one gets fed weekly and one twice a month as she is the one with feeders living with her. I also sow microgreen seeds for foraging, lentils, bean, peas and her favorite I start outside the tank, sunflowers. I do wild flowers too. I also grow various veggies as I have a guinea pig too. As an american here, you may want to state that 18, 16 is celsius and not fahrenheit. I'd hate to see some kill their baby thinking it's Fahrenheit
I have large thick branches, do they work almost as good as the slate/bricks?
Do you have source on reptiles being able to choose to bask in UVB? As in they are able to differentiate it and therefore make a choice.
