Hey Dan, Just wanted to comment and say that I'm happy you've done this video series it honestly has helped me personally. I was already on the fence of like , knowing how I was spending in the hobby wasn't the greatest and your videos on this topic has been helpful to strengthen my good spending habits thought process. So I've refocused put a pause on the hobby and I'm working on getting debt free first. A lot of this hobby IMO can be "TLDR" - it's a big FOMO storm, gotta buy buy buy before it goes up in value! Which can lead a lot of people down a path that is hard to crawl out of. It's so important for everyone and myself to understand that this hobby is exclusively excess spending. I know that once I am debt free and truly have extra money to spend on the hobby it will be SO much more enjoyable to buy that big card that you want etc etc.
Yeah a lot of people I think justify it by calling it "investing" when it's often time just excess consumption sometimes with a bit of gambling thrown in (ripping packs but also "investing " in such speculative non productive stuff)

Different levels of income and different jobs. But I like listening to you as it makes me feel like I could jump in and follow your examples and actually do something I enjoy. During and out of college I always listened to and read a bunch of different folks stories. I'm a fan of the style of content too so I just try to make what I'd enjoy even though it's quite a bit more nice. Thanks!

Great video as always, thanks for talking rationally about personal finance in this space. The vet slander is a bit harsh and reductive however.
It was definitely an off the cuff reactionary response to the unsolicited quote for something I'd never even heard of that just happened to be the same week as recording. Sorry to the vets out there!
I agree with just about everything you say, but one exception. You said some couples with one self employed person have the security, the foundational thing of the "regular" job. Nothing secure or foundational about having the chance of receiving a pink slip and being laid off or fired any day of the week. Self employment, as far as I see it, is the secure foundational thing, because you get to control everything, it's not easy, I didn't say that, but it is much more secure in my mind.
Very dependent on the field and the specific job both for the 9 to 5 and the self employed business. My wife just got tenure which ups the security level and teachers with the union and being essential jobs its near as secure as it gets. But yeah, definitely take into account the true risk on all fronts of your income sources. Be it rents from property, 9 to 5 employment, contract work, self employed biz, dividends and on and on.
¿? Lol thanks for the long form content. I listen while working. $1500 for brushing is crazy. It wasnt a cleaning? Like scrubbing plaque buildup? That can get costly but nowhere near $1500. It was $400 for my cat. Its expensive because they have to put them to sleep and keep them all day/overnight to monitor them. Some cats get plaque often and some not at all. 1 out of my 4 need consistent brushing. 1 also brushes his own teeth lol you can try getting those little cat stands that come with that brush attachment designed for a cut to walkthrough to brush themselves. My cat bites on it after eating to clean his teeth.
I was ded exaggerating a bit when I said it was for brushing. Part of the quotes both were for anesthesia and overnight stay etc. Still though was wild to me. All the things we do for our pets that my parents never did growing up I just don't know. Most of our pets lived super long growing up too (anecdotes)
Like buy or rent a house? Highly dependent on the location and also how long you think youll be there. Some young people way too negative on renting imo. I own my house and it's still real expensive and feels like renting after taxes and maintenance
