Maqām is the system of melodic modes used in traditional Persian music, which is mainly melodic. The word maqam means place, location or position.
But the Daf maqam is a rhythmic type. It is "a technique of improvisation" that defines the rhythmic patterns and development of a piece of music and which is "unique to Daf art music." There are about 21 rhythmic patterns of Daf music. Improvisations in traditional Persian Daf music are based on the maqam system.
