To expect someone their age to be so morally sound they would sacrifice themselves for these people is kinda nuts. They also understand that if they go back Marley will just kill them and send the next set of candidates. If you think Reiner was a problem wait until Gabi rolls up with the armor. They know that even sacrificing themselves to save the people of the walls is only temporary. Their only real shot would have been to betray Marley and work with Paradise. But how can they reasonable be expected to choose people they've known for a few years over the families that raised them. Not to mention the fact that Paradis would be in a very tight spot when asked to forgive and work with the guys that broke Maria and killed thousands.

Especially since the death count in Trost was 0 civilians and 207 soldiers killed - a lot cleaner than the thousands of civilians an adult Armin killed. One hundred civilians were killed during Annie and Eren’s fight under Erwin’s say so, I feel the warriors tend to have people fixate on their murders much more so than any other character’s, which makes emotional sense. Killing in any case is clearly wrong, these were teenagers killing under extreme duress so I think evil is quite the moniker to give them especially after their characters are deconstructed.

Keep watching, it gets better! Even though I was a manga reader and knew what was about to happen I still ended up crying in this scene. Armin's hands down my favorite character in the series and it was so hard to watch with the beautiful OST playing in the background really just messing me up for hours after the episode aired.

It just occurred to me, they could've defeated Bertholdt and Reiner without needing to sacrifice anyone. All they need is one person in ODM gear to force Bertholdt into using his steam attack, which also makes him stationary. They can maintain their distance and switch out with another person if it gets too hot for them. Conserve the gas such that only one person is using ODM gear at a given time. Meanwhile, someone can take a second set of ODM gear with them to retrieve Eren from his titan. Eren can loop around Bertholdt in ODM gear and flank Reiner with a second transformation, since we know Eren can transform up to 3 times. Eren has no trouble 1v1ing Reiner, but with a second person in ODM gear backing him up like Mikasa, Reiner wouldn't stand a chance. Gas would then be conserved to only two people, the person helping Eren with Reiner, and the person keeping Bertholdt distracted. They don't need to actually defeat Bertholdt in this situation, they just need to outlast him. If Armin alone had enough gas to keep Bertholdt on hold long enough for Eren, the entire of our group would most certainly have enough to keep him distracted long enough for Eren to fight Reiner. It's certainly a gamble, and limits usage of ODM gear to two people, but it may have just prevented Levi being forced to choose between Armin and Erwin with the serum.
