    What size spring did you use to replace the broken one? We discovered this as our problem but are not sure where to start to look for a replacement spring.

      Hi Rachel. I actually have a container of salvaged springs and I seem to recall just trying different springs until one was close enough to work. Another option would be to remove the spring and take it with you to a hardware store and look for a replacement spring that is similar. I have also found assorted spring sets in most chain stores (they are usually where the screws and nails are). Let me know if that helps.

    • @DialedInDIY

      Yes, it is most likely the spring. If you are comfortable with a bit of DIY work then you can open it up and carefully replace the spring. I just used a random spring that was close to the original size and cut a bit of the extra length off. I really appreciate the feedback and you taking time to watch my video and post your comment! I tried a bunch of random springs until I found one that is close (it was not meant for this purpose). I think the one I ended up using was from a box of different size springs I got at the hardware store. I just had to cut a bit off to make it the right size.

    Pull String Toy Repair? It's a slide show. Being a DIY channel and mentioning "Pull String Toy Repair" in the title, it would have honestly been of value to us to see "how" you supposedly fixed the spring. Looks to be a repeated question in the comments. Your answer's to these questions are interestingly vague. Springs are tricky.. Your run of the mill hardware stores most likely won't have delicate specialized springs such as this.. So lets say you did find just the right spring in your magic box of springs.. Showing the replacement process would have made for a truly helpful "DIY Video.." More questions than answers. Perhaps this particular DIY could have a few less gimmicky video effects and be a little more Dialed in. Cheers!

      @DialedInDIY  2 роки тому

      [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit] Your comment is quite fair. In reality the video came after the repair... and was not originally intended to be a how to repair video until a friend asked me to put something out showing what it looked like. Since I had already returned the toy doll I could not go back to get additional images or video. Interestingly enough I actually found several springs that worked for this very purpose and simply picked one and cut it to size... it was literally just a brief trial and error to get the right fit.

    I have a Woody doll clear from 1995. I put fresh batteries in him and he doesnt say anything. My only guess is that the Voice Box needs to be fixed or replaced. Is it easy to replace the voice box in a woody doll of that year?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      Do you hear any form of a click or electric response type of sound? My first check on this would be to look at the speaker and speaker wires. That is an easier fix. If a wire is loose you can reattach it. You can test the sound board by using another speaker connected with clips to the sound board where the original speaker connects to see if it will make any sound. Also check to see if when the string is pulled the little piece of metal winds around far enough to complete the connection.

    Hi, and thank you. With our Woody the spring doesn't LOOK broken, but maybe it is (and I simply do not know what I'm doing, admittedly???) The issue is that the string isn't retracting. Is that an indicator?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 років тому +1

      Good question. Does the string retract at all or is it stuck fully extended? If it goes back part way then it is likely the spring being stretched out over time due to use (not uncommon with pull string switches).

    Any tips on make a slow retract pull string.?? My son is crazy for small details. String has to finish when the phrase is? Help!

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  4 роки тому

      Although I have not tried it there are options to consider (depending upon how handy you are). One of the problems allot of people comment about is that over time the string retraction slows which is due to the internal spring beginning to relax more and more. Aiding in the "relaxing" process by way of stretching could work or even changing the spring to one that is less stiff. How new is the pull string toy? If new, then it may slow on its own over time. I totally get a child wanting things to hit the right details. Hope that helps!

    Would it be possible to remove the audio chip and program it to say different things?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 років тому +3

      Hi Faith, great question. Most of these are made from parts that can only be recorded on once. But... the part that "talks" is often called an IC Voice Chip, Sound Chip, Voice Module, etc. You can actually find them pre-recorded, recordable 1 time only or even re-recordable. Was your goal to make the same toy say something different or did you want to take the audio chip out to use for a different purpose?

    • @HerbalAssailant
      @HerbalAssailant 7 років тому +3

      Ok so! I am trying to recreate a toy from an episode of Spongebob called "The Magic Conch Shell" which is basically a Magic Eight Ball but instead of shaking it you pull a pull-string and it says different answers. So far, after a couple of hours of research, I've sorta formulated a base plan as to how I could do this.
      1.) 3D print the exterior (since it's just two pieces of plastic seemingly glued together)
      2.) I realized the chips in toys are mostly one use only but I figured that the ones in greeting cards aren't and found this: bigdawgsgreetings.com/product/bare-usb-push-200-sec/
      3.) Extract the pull-string mechanism from an old/broken toy
      4.) Figure out some way to get the pull-string to work with the sound module.
      This is more of a dream project considering I'm not too well versed in electronics and engineering, but if you think it could work I'd be more than willing to try.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 років тому +2

      Excellent idea! I love it. Yes, that is totally doable. The pull string part completes a connection that serves as nothing more than a switch so all you would have to do is change that out for the switch connections on the sound chip (essentially just changing out the chip board). BTW, the chip you found looks perfect; 20 recordings that rotate each time you hit the switch, it has its own power source and speaker. If you try it, then I'd love to hear how it turns out!!!

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      Does the string not wind up at all or does it still have a little bit of winding effect left? If there is none, then I think it might be that the spring is not attached on one of the ends. See if that might be the case. If not, then see if you can see any kind of change or effect whey trying to pull the string.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  4 роки тому

      Best way to fix the wires to the speaker is solder especially if there are no posts on the speaker. If you do not have that and the speaker has some posts to connect to then you can wrap the wire around the posts and try hot glue.
      Is the "yellow string" the main pull string? For the most part if you can pull something off then there should be a way to fix it... as long as nothing broke. Let me know if you needed more info! Thanks for watching!!

      Did the string come all of the way out (separated from the toy) or just won't retract all of the way. If there is no pull back at all then there is a good chance the spring inside is broken, like in the video. [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]

    Hi! I bought some 90s Ren and Stimpy pull string toys. They do sound, but really fast, like an LP when turning the pitch too high. Do you think is it because of dead batteries? I'd like to know before surgery... thank you!

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 років тому +1

      Very cool sounding purchase. Usually I hear these things slow down when the batteries are old. I wonder if the playback is tied to the movement of the string. If you stop the string as it is retracting does the playback stop?

    • @figuerman1
      @figuerman1 6 років тому

      Dialed In DIY had no idea about it! That's right, when pulling the string and then holding it, voice freezes until I let the string go to talk the rest of the quote 👍

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 років тому +1

      Very interesting. Playback speed may be tied into the speed the string retracts. If that is the case, then the more you use the device the more the internal springs will get "broken in" and potentially reach the right sounding speed. Test idea: see if you can control the speed of playback simply by controlling the rate at which the string retracts (hope that makes sense... I'm a bit sleep deprived at the moment).

    • @figuerman1
      @figuerman1 6 років тому

      hi there again! yup, it works holding and slowly releasing the string... it sounds like you can awkwardly control the pitch depending on hoy you let the string be retracted.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 років тому

      I think that is actually good news then. Maybe the internal spring needs to be broken in a bit to get to the regular sound (i.e. perhaps Ren & Stimpy are wound a little tight and just need to relax...). If they all sound the same then I think that increases the odds that this is right.

      OH on top of that, do you know a way that would make the phrases said when the string retracts instead of when it's pulled? I have a voice box from another pull string toy I have that does just that and even has some sort of mechanism in it that makes the string retract slower, somewhat like an old Mattel pull string toy but it's electronic.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      Great question. I actually do not know the actual chip used in these but pull a few apart and you will quickly start to notice some similarities. Usually similar size, similar contact points and the voice chip is under a dot which complete prevents hacking the recorded audio.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      @@Aeiutube Another good Q! What I have seen on the type that activate on the "pull" is a metal trigger that completes a circuit which starts the audio. On the type that play on retract you can typically stop the audio by holding the string from moving. Old school toys like that had a form of plastic record/disc that spun like a vinyl record or CD. I have not seen any recent toys that work like that. I'd be curious to see what makes those work. Thanks again for posting and watching!

    How can I fix the pull string, it won’t draw back and it’s exactly like yours.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  4 роки тому +1

      If it won't pull back at all, then it is most likely a broken spring. I just searched through an assortment of springs to find one similar. I cut it to the same length and bent the ends to match the old spring and it worked. To be honest, it was a little bit of trial and error until I got the right fit.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  4 роки тому

      Also, if the pull string retracts some but not all of the way then the spring is likely starting to wear out (it can't coil back as tight). Hope this helps. Let me know if that was not the problem you are having. Oh, and I suggest taking pictures before you take things apart so you can see how they were put together originally. It has saved me many times!!

    do you know how to switch voice boxes with another woody

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      It will require some solder points if you are replacing the sound chip and keeping the original pull string set-up (I'm assuming the voice box/sound board is the same size). If the replacement board still has the speaker attached, and it works, keep it on there. Then all you have to do is solder the 2 wires coming in from the pull string box in the same places the old one was connected. Let me know if that works... or if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching my video!

    With the release of Toy Story 4, I went ahead and pulled out my old 2001 Woody Doll. That thing has been beaten to hell, but I'm trying to clean it up a bit. When I was younger, I made the mistake of cutting random things off the doll, (his belt loops, a bit of his jacket...) and the horrific mistake of amputating his pull string. Until now, I had never bothered to actually open him up. I got his gear box out and everything, but there's one thing that confuses me. His pull string doesn't retract. It seems to go in reverse. I have no idea what happened when I cut it, but I'd imagine that would have damaged something. Anything worth mentioning here? I had an old 2001 Woody. Don't remember much about him , but he had a very offputting face compared to the newer ones. I believe this is the one I have, but I'm not too sure, since there were many different woody's that used the same body and face sculpt. I don't remember mine having any accessories. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/luoAAOSw6D9c8SD1/s-l640.jpg

      I am assuming you cut off part of the pull string and the rest of what's left seems to work in reverse of what you'd expect. Is that about right? I'm wondering if the bit that was left somehow got wound back the opposite direction.

    I have a Toy Story Jessie doll that I am trying to get fixed for my daughter. She's had it for a year and from the moment we got her the present she was not working. When we pull the string, she does not speak or say anything. Would it be possible to have her repaired?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      That is such a bummer! There are a couple of things you should be able to check pretty easily if you'd like. First, check that the connections from the battery or battery pack are secure. Second, check the wires to the speaker. For both of these a simple fix of a loose wire is often all that is needed. Other than not speaking does it seem that the pull string seems to work ok?

    • @MannyChia
      @MannyChia 5 років тому

      I used a screwdriver to open up the voice box and had a look through the wires and everything seemed connected. I would pull the string and it also seemed fine. My daughter does have a Woody doll also, so I checked the batteries with both dolls and the Jessie doll still didn't work. I'm stumped as I'm not too knowledgeable with working on electrical things an soldering.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      Glad you checked the batteries because I thought about that after I posted my previous reply. Since it appears wires and batteries are good then the next thing I check is the part that works like a switch to start the voice. In Woody, when the string is pulled, eventually the spring rotates enough to cause a metal piece on the spring to touch another metal piece (both have wires connected). This completes the circuit and allows power to flow which starts the voice/sounds. Can you see if those metal pieces are able to touch when the string is pulled?

    • @MannyChia
      @MannyChia 5 років тому

      @@DialedInDIY hi again and thank you for the responses.
      If you are referring to the metal piece that makes a half turn then makes contact with the other piece of metal then yes it does make contact with the other piece of metal. They are both making contact with each other.
      If I may ask, what would be the worst case scenario if that does not work? Is it possible that the voice chip could be damaged or defective beyond repair?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 років тому

      @@MannyChia Worst case? Yes, it could be the sound chip was defective from the start. You have checked the easiest options I can think of; batteries, loose wires & switch contact. What I would check next is an alternate speaker (even using one from an old head set); find where the original speaker wires connect and touch contacts for a different speaker to the same 2 points and see if it makes any sound. I would also want to check to see if power was going through the switch and speaker by using a basic multi meter.

      Sounds like you have the "Toy Story Collection" version of Buzz... I have not seen the inside of one of those so the best I can do is make some guesses. Let's take a closer look at the problem before anything is worked on.
      First, the head is supposed to move when he talks which means it is likely controlled by a chip that operates a small motor. If the voice still works but there is no movement then perhaps the battery is low but not dead (you may have already thought of this but have you tried new batteries?).
      Second, the springs for the wings... do you push the wings in and they usually lock in place? If yes, then does it still have some spring push back when you try to close the wing ? If yes, then there may be a loose or broken locking part.

    • @deaidanshow1416

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 років тому

      Have you had a chance to check the batteries? That is one possible cause of the head being able to move at first but then stop. The wing sounds like it is catching on something inside which would require taking it apart and you may not want to do that unless you are very comfortable with doing that kind of work (because you may find more parts that are tough to put back once it is completely open). Does that make sense?

      Do you know what is wrong with it? Maybe you can fix it yourself.

      Did the pull string come apart or is it the wire to the battery?

      Dialed In DIY I Bought one buZZ with utility belt but when I press the all bottom
      It doesn’t work

      So the utility belt button triggers battery powered stuff right? Do any of the other buttons still work? My first thought here is a battery problem so I figure that is the easiest thing to check or rule out.
