If the film leader is not rewound into the cassette, you can cut it off in the light. You don’t even need to open the cassette in that case, less chance of touching the emulsion.
I had a plastic one. The first time I did this it was in a tiny closet. I started feeling sick because the space was so small and I couldn't seem to get it right. Took me a long time to roll two. The next time it was easier, then I could do it in my sleep.
I’ve used the jiggle technique he describes for 4 years after I first saw this video. I can vouch that it’s effective. I check this constantly: roll reel, move film back and forth, roll reel, move film back and forth…. It’s easier to avoid a problem early than have to correct for it later in your reel.
I know Hewes brand reels are designed with the 2 prongs, but all the free generic brand reels I've acquired are NOT this premium style of reel. They do not have the fangs/prongs. I did not know that the beginning should be routed within the center of the spool. I purchased a Hewes version of these reel that is suited for a 1500 series Jobo tank (this type of tank has a funnel in its center, and can be used for inversion hand processing.) I will find out if that extra in the center will interfere with insertion of the funnel after loading the film thanks for this "Hewes version of spool" instruction
I have the same Hewes reel and I really like its design, though I have yet to use it because I don’t have a compatible tank. Is there a particular brand of tank you prefer for a single 35mm roll?
Thanks! Touching the surface of the film is ok?

At 1:46 I said "Right index finger" when I meant to say "Left index finger". Apologies for the confusion. - Paul M.

Nice job. I find it easier to leave the fill cap off when putting the lid on since it allows air to escape.
Great tips and I did it right after watching this! Thank you!

Thank you so much. I just bought a new Hewes reel and wasn’t too sure about how to start loading the film. Great video!
