Bogart never played Sam Spade on the radio in the series. He only did two radio productions as Sam Spade: a 1943 Screen Guild Theater production and a 1946 Academy Award Theater production. Howard Duff did the first 63 episodes on the radio.
I don't believe that Peter Lorre was in this episode, rather, an actor, probably the same one who played Dr. Zoya, who was imitating Lorre's iconic vocal style. It was a good imitation, but not perfect. Moreover, Lorre was an established star and unlikely to bother coming to the studio for a three minute scene in an new and unproven series. Finally, if he was actually in the cast his name would surely have been mentioned in the credits. It isn't. For these reasons, I'm convinced it wasn't Peter Lorre.

I just read the history of the original Sam Spade character, by the author Dashiell Hammett, again. What a talent, what a tragic life story. Sometimes we are our own worse enemy. I remember those trails that took Howard Duff and others off of the air.
Joseph McCarthy's investigations into communism did not take Duff off the air. McCarthy accused Dashiell Hammett of being a communist, which destroyed Hammett's career. Duff and Hammett were close friends, and to side with Hammett, Duff quit the radio series and began making movies.
Lo. L. H and H. Has been here for a while (yrs) but only during the shut downs did I find them. (This and H/H Hollywood film news. ) This is really fun and friendly channel. I don't know there ppl personally, it's a working couple, but I say that genuinely from the heart. Mr H runs the radio side and Mrs H does old time movies and a gest news reel. Both are sweet Family clean decent. I don't paid a red cent however, I certainly have been getting dividens. ❤ M. Illinois
I just can’t get Bogart’s voice and sass out of my head. Well, it’s just the second episode; maybe it’ll grow on me. Wonder how many radio shows Bogart, Lorre and Greenstreet made together in the Sam Spade series?

This is great! I had to look up Howard Duff to recognize him but Peter Lorre is unmistakeable in the first episode.

Just shake head over those days. Any good intentions canceled out by …. Duff was very good voice and actor.
