    I agree 100&
I'm a 69yo Australian & was lucky enough to see Nina perform live in London,England in the late 60's.This was in a venue in Brixton,London called The Ram Jam Club.
She was mesmerising & had the audience in the palm of her hands.
She has such a powerful presence & would stop playing if anyone spoke too loudly etc.
It definetly was one of the very best concerts that i saw in London & that included concerts with Tom Jones,Traffic,Donovan & others.
I will always remember that moment!

Nina Simone sings LOVE, PAIN, & every feeling of what we as people must go through in life. Not around, but through. Her music is definitely an acquired taste. God blessed me with the opportunity to experience her live, in Atlanta one summer night at the Fox theater. I truly appreciate, & love her unconditionally

the song "cotton eyed joe" originated in the mid 1800's. it was sang by slaves on plantation farms. also sung by (some) soldiers leaving for the war. she sung this beautifully!

Be careful about that. She has a beautiful voice, but all of her love songs are about serial monogamy, and that will give them a not-so-great life. If anything, you could possibly use the songs as a warning/object lesson about the emotional dangers of it.

Don't feel bad, my mom played it to death when I was 3+ and I hated it. I would ask my mom how could he see with cotton in his eyes? She just kept playing and singing this song over and over every day. I have grown to love this song as an adult and just about all of the great works that Nina Simone has given to us. Shout out to her daughter, another Simone who is gifted, just like her Mama😊

+Alise Šēnberga No it isn't. According to citations from the Wikipedia article, the earliest known recording is from 1928. Nina Simone didn't record it until 1959. Furthermore, another citation indicates that the song itself pre-dates the American Civil War.
Going back to the music, this is a fantastic version! :)

Isn't Simone the 1st who record it? Maybe she isn't original artist who sang this song, but... If she's the 1st who record it then in some way hers version is original. But, I agree with with you whit this, that she performed it perfectly. :)

Wow! Until now I just knew the annoying Rednex version of this song. Since I'm interested in facts and saw the name, I just found out that it's an old American cival war song and now I can enjoy this song, it's quite the opposite of the loud dance chart friendly Rednex version, well done, Nina.

    NINA SIMONE
    "Cotton Eyed Joe"
If it hadn't been for cotton-eye joe
I'd been married long time ago
Where did you come from. Where did you go?
Where did you come from cotton-eye joe?
    [repeat]
He came to town like a midwinter storm
He rode through the fields so
    Handsome and strong
His eyes was his tools and his smile was his gun
But all he had come for was having some fun
    [repeat intro]
He brought disaster wherever he went
The hearts of the girls was to hell broken sent
They all ran away so nobody would know
And left only men cause of cotton-eye joe
    [repeat intro]
Writer(s): Patrick Edenberg, Nina Simone, Orjan Kjell Anders Oberg, jan M. Eriksson

This blew my mind. I was born in the 90's and never heard a version of this song other than 1994 Rednex. It is fucked up that I didn't know the song went back to pre-Civil War and was co-opted (polite word for stolen) by white people. It's prob. because nobody bothered to teach us white kids much about that part of American culture/history. All part of the whitewashing of history and culture. Thanks, Nina for reminding me to keep digging out the lies I was taught.
