    My daughter had bacterial meningitis. Doctors were ignorant and turned her away TWICE. Don't ever listen to doctors when you have a strong gut instinct. Especially as a parent. You know your child. We were so lucky. We still have our baby girl and she's doing so great.

      Karue22 that's horrible, I'm sorry to hear. Did she loose anything? How did you know she had it at the start?

      blackbird780 My daughter had streptococcal meningitis instead of meningococcal. So she did not lose any limbs. She did however suffer a stroke from a blood clot that formed in her brain. It caused that portion of her brain to die. I noticed she was a bit off. acting sick. But what really worried me is that she would cry when we would pick her up and moving her around. If we layed her down she would stop. I took her into the ER and they told me she was just teething (because she had a mild fever) I knew it wasn't right and persisted but they sent us home. she cried and cried and cried so my mother in law decided to take her for the day. I gave her a bottle, she fed but did not open her eyes at all. During the day I had no idea she was getting sicker and sicker. I could not understand how no one saw how sick she was. My mother-in-law said she seemed fine but when I went to pick her up she was white as paper, moaning in pain, I took her temp right away and as soon as it hit 102 and continued to go up I rushed her to the ER. While we were there she had her first seizure. Later on we were informed that she had her stroke between the first time we took her to the ER and the second. All of the signs were there. If they had only listened to me it could possibly have been prevented. Three weeks after coming home from the hospital surviving meningitis the symptoms continued. I immediately brought her to the ER. The doctor told me she was fine because, get this, she looked better than she had the first time he saw her. And he turned us away once again. Only this time I didn't listen to him. I took my daughter straight from there to children's hospital and they did a scan only to find that she did indeed have it once again. My baby survived though. She's our little miracle

    That baby girl omg as a mother, I can't even imagine what this is like but my whole heart goes out to each of them. I'll never make sense of why bad things happen to good people. I have a rare brain tumor and chiari malformation where the bottom of my brain herniated outside of my skull and is pressing into my spinal cord. My son was tragically killed after bible study 3 weeks ago and I just don't understand.... But I do know that I have to keep going as much as I don't want to.... I hold this youtube channel very close to my heart. Hugs & love to all who see this :) from New Orleans...

      ClaireNicole33 I had chairi malformation, but had surgery to help. I also had tethered cord, cmt, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. it's amazing on how many thing can go wrong and how many people a "normal ". for the ones that have to deal with the rare health issues it's hard but makes us strong. it's sad but it's also for the strong fighters. I hope your doing well and hope this comes across positively and not in a bad way ! stay strong and fight on

      ClaireNicole33 wow, you're VERY strong. I'm sorry to hear about your troubles... horrible thing to go through. It's true it seems... good people seem to get the most hardship. My theory is that life is a training ground or "matrix" if you like. We are "plugged in" to experience many different things (good and bad). These things are meant to build our wisdom and strength on the other side. Perhaps, we CHOSE our particular life experience because we are on another level of wisdom and require more of a challenge. This is shown by our good hearted character in a tough world full of ugliness. Maybe we come into this "matrix" with agreements, prior to entering, with other souls. We chose each other for different roles, in our lives, in order to help challenge each other spiritually. When we enter though, we have an amnesia of our REAL existence in another dimension; therefore, we forget we are supposed to learn from it all. The wiser of us pick up on it and live our lives through holding to our good morals and growing from the worst of experiences. The "younger souls" maybe don't pick up quite as easy and can sometimes allow their bad experiences to tear them down instead of build them up and strengthen them... they let a lot of lessons slip through their hands at the start. These "younger souls" are the lost ones... the ones that perform heinous acts or simply tear others down around them (but their purpose will bring us the challenges we need as well as all of the tough times we experience). If this is all true, perhaps you and your son CHOSE each other before you came into this "training ground". You planned it all to go exactly as it has for reasons beyond our knowing in this amnesia state we exist in

      MsRespect247 Thank you for sharing your story:)... I couldn't agree more on how amazing it is that so many things can go wrong. I have many other health issues including an infected 8 by 10 inch hernia mesh screen that's slowly killing me. It's my second one due to my body rejecting the first one. I'm now told that nobody's gonna wanna remove this one bcuz of the risks associated with it. REALLY? You mean technology can do whole face transplants, BUT CAN'T REMOVE AN INFECTED HERNIA MESH SCREEN!?? I have Louisiana medicaid and that's why I'm left to die here!! I'm happy when I see success stories like yourself with your chiari surgery bcuz they're rare. I love this channel so much. I think it's a wonderful place where we can come together and share our stories and be supportive of each other:)...

    I'm surprised the little girl wasn't taught to walk sooner. I've seen videos of toddlers with prosthetics walking. It seems like it would have been beneficial to encourage her when she was younger as she would be more used to it and her muscles would not be so retracted. Does anyone know why she wasn't taught younger?

      Were they walking with two above the knee prosthetics? Or were one or both of their amputations below the knee? Having or not having a knee totally changes how you walk and how difficult it is.

    In my local newspaper, there was a recent story about a healthy, active 20-something who contracted meningitis at a gym. She survived, but became a quadruple amputee. I know it's a very rare disease. I need to lose weight, but reading that story scared me out of ever going to a gym. All that sweat and other bodily fluids on exercise equipment, transmitting diseases. Yuck!

    • @cosmickitty9533

      Just go to the gym but be sure to wash your hands throughly before eating or putting your hands near your face/mouth. Do not share water bottles or utensils with others.

      Elphaba Crux Thanks for your advice! I recently spoke to my sister, who is a neurology resident, about germs and gyms. She is a gym rat herself. She advised me to ask the gym about how/if they clean equipment. My sister said that when she uses gym equipment, she thoroughly wipes down all surfaces with disinfecting wipes. I know getting meningitis, or any disease for that matter, at the gym is vanishingly rare. But you don't want to be that one unlucky statistic. However, it seems like taking simple precautions will prevent it.

    This is so horrible and sad. Scares me as I have a 1 year old. Can anyone answer this? She just had her 1 year vaccine... can that REALLY prevent her from catching this or can she STILL get it? Does it simply lower her odds of catching it and how much? If a child at daycare has it, is she doomed to get it as well? This looks like a parents WORST nightmare 😕

    • @kailawebb
      @kailawebb 7 років тому +1

      blackbird780 it very much depends on the strength of your child's immune system. in most individuals the vaccine grants an incredible degree of immunity, as it trains your body to attack the disease the second it's in your child. however, some children's immune systems are poor, so even if their body recognizes the disease it may not be able to defeat it. furthermore, some children's immune systems aren't very good at recognizing the disease, making them also susceptible.
      since for the majority of children vaccines work, if every child is vaccinated then you have what's called "herd immunity" in the community. this means that since most children kill off the disease with their healthy immune systems, then the disease never reaches children who are weaker. these plagued of antivaxxers have weakened or, in the case of California, destroyed herd immunity so that these few weaker children are basically just waiting to be in contact with the disease. however successful herd immunity is what destoryed small pox.
      I know this probably isn't what you wanted to hear as a parent, but I figured telling you would want to know.
      sources: college biology courses

    • @carolinaferreira2560
      @carolinaferreira2560 7 років тому +2

      Well, here on Brazil we get the vaccines for free and it's kinda rare to see someone who caught it and was vaccinated.

    • @carolinaferreira2560
      @carolinaferreira2560 7 років тому +2

      And follow my way of thinking: if we get the vaccines for free, it means less people get meningitis, and if less people get it, smaller the chances of contamination. It's such a shame to see those big countries not giving the vaccines. Brazil's health system may be f*cked up without the money needed for it to run smoothly, but they really know how to prevent those diseases.

    They need to control Charlotte's weight though. I have all my limbs, but I'm overweight and my knees suffer so!

    Barney, this video is very interesting. thanks for sharing. may i ask you this : one of your photos show you with your right leg, with a special shoe : it seems that something was not good, so you decided to take off this right leg: is ir because painful? other difficulty?
    As you are, now, you are a very attractive guy, and probably stronger..

      I sucked my thumb until I was 11 but Charlotte doesn't have thumbs so maybe its just a comfort thing.

      I was thinking she may need the soother to help withthe pain levels when they are making casts for her prosthetics- the scraping of skin and pressure from the casting must be incredible.

    I'm just curious, what condition does the guy interviewer have? -since he was in a wheelchair for most of the video.. I don't think it was just so he could appear to be like them so they would feel better..
