Hey Doug.! Live in Dallas area and I was struck by the same freeze issue with the Polaris pump. Lots of lessons learned here! Have the same setup and your video it really helped me a lot. Going straight to Leslie’s to get the “newer” impeller. Bought a new 3900 Sport cleaner. Looking forward to a cleaner pool and some “normalcy” after an EXTREMELY rough winter. Thank you SO much for posting this video! God Bless!
Hi, did you ever get the right impeller and did it work. Same thing happened to mine. I am in Dallas and my pool guy still cannot get a new booster pump or heater so I figured I would try to fix it myself. Luckily my main pump made it
I like everyone else, can't get the right impeller. This video gave me an idea to glue the impeller. Instead of epoxy, I used superglue on both parts. I superglued the outside and the inside area as well. I let it rest overnight and crossed fingers. Well it worked, the pb4 has been running now. And hopefully I will get a replacement when I can get a hold of one.
Actually your failure helped me ! I did the same thing and since I watched your video didn’t waist my time trying to put wrong part on .Apparently Amazon doesn’t say before 2011 and eBay does so just ordered the correct one . I know it’s correct because of the price . Wish I had Left my hoses on . Great idea !!
I have this problem, and can easily do the work. I just needed someone to show me what needed to be done. Thank you for that... Parts are damn hard to come by, but found some on Ebay.
Glad to find this vedio and I was about to purchase a motor for this without doing any troubleshooting, as many suggest impeller can last long. Obivously they are wrong. The new impeller is sold out everywhere except some on Ebay, which costs twice of its fair price.
A quick way to determine if you have the new style or the old style is to look at the bracket between the volute (where the plumbing connects) and the motor. If it just has one large hole on either side, it's the old model. If it has slightly wavy slots on the sides, it's the new style.
Thanks for the video. It was clear and honest and very helpful. My setup is very similar. Luckily I had bought a used pump at some point so was able to get the impeller from there. I'll rebuild the used one and have ready to swap if there is a next time. Thanks for posting.
If I didn't know better, I would say you somehow got ahold of my PB4-60 pump and impeller. It's cracked exactly the same way. I'm in Austin Texas. In hindsight I should have done an emergency winterizing on my pool when we lost power at 2AM but we were supposed to have rolling blackouts, right? Not me. No power for 36 hours straight. 2" PVC shattered, DE Filter lid shattered. Pentair Sta-rite VS+SVRS pump housing cracked (going to try JB Weld on that crack near a bolt. And the PB4-60 impeller cracked just like yours. I'm unsure of the type of plastic used on the impeller. I'm wondering if a thick plastic washer (maybe 4mm X 4mm thick that joins the impeller to the axle would hold with JB Weld? Might not have to be a full washer. Just 3 or 4 square blocks. My idea is the increase the surface contact between the impeller and the broken off piece (axle?)
@@jknight413 I used J B Weld on my Pentair main pump housing (both inside and outside) where it cracked near a side bolt hole and it seems to be holding (so far). Replaced my filter lid, cracked PVC and I think I'm going to have to just buy a whole new PB4-60 unless Polaris has a shipping container full of impellers due here soon.
just attempted this, mine broke exact same place, only took about 15min to fix, so easy. ONLY cleaner is still not running, any ideas? frustrated. i can hear the bearings running rough, but I think i can see the shaft spinning, out of ideas except to take apart again or buy new
Mine just stopped working yesterday, however the motor is super quite now? I can hear it come on but seems very quite, not sure if its the impeller or something else
@@dallasjr21 There is a grommet assembly that worked for the original impeller to keep it from leaking through the motor side, but it doesn’t make a seal on the new one. So I put a 3/4” hose rubber washer on the impeller side of the grommet to make a tight seal and it hasn’t failed yet.
@@eternalwordofgod I'm late to this video. Had the exact same problem as the OP. How is the modification of the 3/4 hose rubber washer working out with the wrong impeller?? I like this hack bc it appears the old style impeller is beefier than the new style. Thanks
LOL. Watching this video is like taking a trip in time to the big freeeze of 2021. I went through (almost) every step to you did back then (except I didn’t get the wrong impeller, but had to wait 30+ days to get one through the only pool store that could get me one, Fast forward one and a half years, impeller has failed again. It’s a pretty terrible design.
What's the latest on impeller availability, did anyone find one? I am also in Dallas but mine failed last week. It's a poor design, the wall thickness is too thin. I just finished JB welding mine but used more material making a larger bead. It looks like there is plenty of clearance in the housing for the larger bead. I'll find out tomorrow if it works, I also had an old motor so I propped it up so that the shaft is vertical, put the glued impeller on the shaft, and turned the shaft to get the runout as little as possible.
Hi Michael- as of Oct 2021, I have not seen any new inventory available from Polaris for this part. I am upset they have had over 6 months to get replacement parts made and even with Covid supply chain issues, it should not have taken this long. I want to write them and complain but I have other house projects to attend to! ha ha. If ANYONE finds a supplier when these parts become available again in stock PLEASE post an update here! For reference the correct impeller part # for this newer booster pump model is R0536400 (from 2011 to present).
I bought the impeller(LAO5L) for the LAO5N pump by mistake, forgetting that I had the PB4-60. I got home and found that it didn't fit. After trying to exchange it for the right one, I found that the store had none in stock, I then tried to find one on the internet. They are sold out everywhere! Not on Ebay, Amazon or any online store. I took the LA05L impeller and trimmed/cut off the part that prevented it from fitting in my PB4-60. I put it together and turned it on! IT WORKED!
I bought this impeller www.amazon.com/Polaris-Swimming-Cleaner-Impeller-Replacement/dp/B003ZTF0US/ref=pd_lpo_86_img_0/137-2868049-6851046?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B003ZTF0US&pd_rd_r=d69dcf01-6d06-43e8-8571-14916b69fb7e&pd_rd_w=5dZyp&pd_rd_wg=iIx2B&pf_rd_p=fb1e266d-b690-4b4f-b71c-bd35e5395976&pf_rd_r=3PNJ04MXFMK99XFW5XQ8&psc=1&refRID=3PNJ04MXFMK99XFW5XQ8. After screwing it on the pump, it would not fit until because of the protruding nose ring. I then took it off and snipped and filed the nose down reinstalled it. I reassembled the pump and turned it on and water started to spew out of the pump. I then realized I had forgotten to install the gasket that was on the pump. Like this one www.amazon.com/dp/B008E6JBFW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_8AE8DBJYAHPWH1AM07RP. I reinstalled it with the gasket and it worked!
This design impeller is the biggest pos I’ve ever seen. Mine failed during the freeze, but I’ve experienced the same fail in the summer. The snout on this impeller is not designed to handle the torque of the motor, and will continue to fail. Polaris should either give owners free replacements, or produce an impeller with a stronger snout. This current one is a joke.
